Description

Legend has it: anyone who sees the Demon Cat of Capitol Hill will be cursed with bad luck. 10-year-old Fina Mendoza just saw it. And the last thing her family needs right now is more bad luck. Fina’s mom just died. So she and her older sister Gabby just moved to Washington, D.C. to live fulltime with Papa, a congressman from California. Fina loves riding the Capitol subways, grabbing snacks in congressional offices, and especially spending more time with Papa – even though he’s always on the phone. But after Fina encounters a mysterious cat, a string of disasters follows. Jars of spaghetti sauce explode. Her beloved Abuelita breaks her leg. And Fina’s only friend in Washington, a congressional dog named Senator Something, becomes the target. The only way for Fina to save her family from future “cat”astrophe is to solve the mystery of the Demon Cat of Capitol Hill.

Move over House Mouse, there’s a new four legged occupant in that historic building and he is not an admirer. From the Rules Committee chambers to the crypt, young Fina explores the mystery of the Demon Cat. A fun read disguised as a book for grade schoolers, it gives keen insight into the everyday workings of the U. S. Capitol and its inhabitants. -- U.S. Congressman David Dreier, former Chair of the House Rules Committee

Fina Mendoza is the kind of bright, lively, curious, loving little girl you want for a best friend forever. Her encounters with her new home in the federal capital are funny and scary, but she’s capable of settling in with gusto. The book is a marvelous introduction to the workings of government, and of a young lady of spunk and smarts. --Susan Stamberg, NPR

Fina Mendoza is the kind of friend you want whether you walk on two legs or four, and “Welcome to Washington, Fina Mendoza” is the kind of book you’ll love to read! – Leah Henderson, author of “One Shadow on the Wall”

“Welcome to Washington, Fina Mendoza” is a book like no other! A beautiful story told through the eyes of a gutsy Latina protagonist, it introduces children to the daily hum of life in our nation’s capital. As Fina seeks to unravel the mystery of the demon cat said to haunt the Capitol, she must also deal with the difficult challenges of new surroundings and a new way of life. Told with unerring accuracy, my son and I recognized the perfect descriptions of the Capitol Dome and Fina’s rich cultural traditions. We cheered Fina on every step of the way! Refreshing and unique, it is already a family favorite. – U.S. Congresswoman Linda Sanchez

Gina has moved to Washington with her family as her dad is a congressman. She misses her best friend. She walks to school with her dad each morning. After school, she walks to his office. She is given a room where she does her homework. On the way there, she would go through the basement of the capitol building as a shortcut to her dad’s office. She sees something out of the corner of her eye. It is a blur. She finds out that the blur is the Demon Cat of Capitol Hill. To see it is to be cursed. Gina and family have “accidents.” Final believes she is cursed. Will she be able to break the curse?

The author has written a charming, delightful story. It is unique. It’s a mystery. I was never bored reading this. I liked the information given about Washington D.C. It’s a story I highly recommend reading!
