Another addition to the Little People collection. Wonderful illustrations add to the story about a woman who wanted to gain a proper education herself and help children to learn.

The things you learn by reading this little series of picture books for young children. I didn't know that Maria Montessori was a woman. I had always admired the MOntessori schools, and I find it heartening that a woman had the foresight to come up with them.

It is a very small book, so there isn't a lot of room to cram in info, but what they did include about her worked with the disabled, and how she was the first woman to go to medical school, in in Italy.

<img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-4978" src="https://g2comm.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Screen-Shot-2019-02-20-at-4.10.37-PM.png" alt="" />

It is a quick look at a famous woman, and hopefully this quick a look will make it easier for a bunch of other states.

Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.

I am so glad this book series exists. The illustrations are gorgeous and they are such an easy and fun way to get very young children interested in history early on while inspiring them with stories of little people who have changed the world in their own ways. Maria Montessori is a terrific role model for young minds. Maria shows that woman can do anything they put their minds to and all children are capable of learning and succeeding in their own way.

However, the last few pages are about Mohammed Ali due to some editing error.

Cute with bright colors and kids of all types represented. Presents enough information to spark questions in a young learner, but not so much that will overwhelm them. Looking forward to reading more from this series!

A perfect little intro book for the young readers. Maria Montessori - not your average subject matter. Refreshing change from the standard early biography books. The writing was engaging, a bit humorous and a great intro. It would be a great book to jump off of into a meatier book. There are other books in this series and I will be adding them to my school library. Thanks Net Galley for the advanced copy. What a delight!

This book is a great introduction to a famous person in history. I enjoy the book as it was informative about the beginning of her life but sends an important message about not giving up! It is an easy read and a child over 6 would be able to read it independently. The illustrations are simple but support the story well. It is a good book in which to have a discussion about and if you are interested in the person, a child who is reading this can explore the subject further. I look forward to reading more of these stories. Thank you net galley for letting me review this book.

Thanks to Netgalley for providing me with an ARC of this book.

As with the other titles in this series, this is a vibrantly illustrated account of the life of Maria Montessori. It would be suitable to use with primary age children and would be a good starting point for discussion about how people learn, if there is one right way to learn as well as equal rights to accessing a quality education.
The text is laid out clearly and the illustrations are an excellent companion to the story.

Definitely one to add to the class library!

Forget about this being a book for childre, this is a book that should be issued to every teacher while training or at graduation in order for it to stand as the guiding light for what education should look like.
I love the message of overcoming difficulties and perseverance; its something that is so valuable as a lesson to instill a sense of humbleness within the next generation.
As always, a perfect read to add to the collection.

This series is always a joy to read, it’s a really nice introduction to well known people for little children. Of course the plot is always a little bit fast but that’s to be expected and it’s totally understandable.
This book shows children the story of one incredible woman, Maria Montessori, a researcher and teacher who was very important for how we learn today. She thought that a good way for children to learn was to use games and fun activities and it totally worked. Her methods are still used today and they have shown great results with children. I think children might enjoy learning the history of some of the teaching methods they use every day.

These books are fantastic for use in a classroom or homeschool setting. They give enough information to pique the interest of young readers into exploring a person further. I use these books to introduce people to my 4 year old and we read more in depth on the people she finds particularly interesting. As always, I love the illustrations and concept.

I wanted to read this book because I am a Montessori teacher. I love the fun way this book introduces the life of Maria Montessori to students who may not know about her life or her teaching methods. I could see my classroom children wanting to read this book over and over again.

Another absolutely charming addition to the Little People, BIG DREAMS range.

Maria Montessori was the first woman to study medicine in Italy, I had no idea ! I’m sure nearly every one has heard of Montessori schools but her background was unknown to me, so while this is a children’s book it’s full of information using simple language and such beautiful naive illustrations, it’s educational too. It will appeal to all ages and as the book says “for the children of today are the makers of tomorrow “.

I would like to thank the Author/the Publishers/NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book for free in exchange for a fair and honest review

I truly loved this one ! I was always fascinated by Maria Montessori and I guess this book is introducing her sooo well ! Definitely a book I would have loved to read as a kid !

I love this series! It's wonderful the topics you can further your knowledge on through this series of picture books! I've always seen Montessori schools around and never really known much about them, let alone that they were founded by a woman!

Since this is a picture book it does not overwhelm the reader with facts about Maria Montessori but instead highlights key events in her life: how she worked with the disabled and was the first woman to go to medical school in Italy! (Go Maria!)

This picture book uses wonderful illustrations to showcase a brief but wonderful insight in to Maria Montessori's life that should easily engage young children.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for making this book available for an honest review.

*The little bio in my copy of this book is actually about Muhammad Ali not Maria Montessori but I'm sure that'll be fixed prior to publication.

I love "Maria Montessori" from the Little People, Big Dreams series. As expected, wonderful illustrations with an interesting Montessori's mini bio for children. This is probably one of the easier reads in this series for little kids as they could easily relate themselves to the text- using fun and innovative ways to learn.

Little People, Big Dreams is a fantastic children's book series that features some pretty awesome people from history for our kids to look up to. I like that this book in the series highlighted Maria Montessori, one of the biggest innovators in early childhood education. The book introduces kids to Maria Montessori's life and how she came to work in the field of education. I think many kids who have a tough time in a traditional school setting sitting still and writing all day would be inspired by Montessori's story and how she thought learning should be hands on. I recommend this book to any kid. These are stories that need to be heard.

What a beautiful addition to the My First Little People, Big Dreams series. I had no knowledge about the origins of Montessori schools and was delighted to find out they were started by a woman. Because this is a children's board book, there isn't a lot of space to shove a ton of information in, but there was a good amount on Maria Montessori and of course, beautiful artwork.

‘The children of today are the makers of tomorrow’
Maria Montessori has a special place in my heart, so I was very happy to see this new title in the ‘Little people, big dreams’ series. The book gives a condensed and accessible account of Maria Montessori’s life. She was born into the world where school activities were dull, with a lot of rota learning and little place for discovery and creativity. Maria also had to break a few barriers in becoming the first woman in Italy to study medicine. She cared so passionately about the disabled children she worked with, that she developed a new method to help them reach their full potential. A lot of her ideas of how to help children grow into ‘free, curious and responsible human beings’ have found their way into mainstream pre-school and school education.
I believe this is a great addition to the series, as this informative and beautifully illustrated (albeit in its special quirky style) book gives young readers an opportunity to read about a great role-model, somebody whose hard workd and dedication changed a lot of lives.

When I was younger, I went to a Montessori school, so I thought I was familiar with the Montessori technique. Although I did know about the method, I certainly knew very little about the woman who developed it.

Maria Montessori, a new board book in the Little People, BIG DREAMS series offers a condensed biography of this pioneering educator designed to be read aloud to babies and toddlers.

Although Maria loved to learn, she thought school was boring and made up games to enliven lessons. She was the only girl in an all-boys technical institute, and the first woman in Italy to study medicine. At times, she was segregated from the male students and had to study cadavers alone. In her first job, working at a hospital for disabled children, she changed the approach to treatment with wondrous effects. She realized her methods would work for all children, and she opened a school. Maria taught her technique all over the world, helping make learning more fun and developing thoughtful learners and critical thinkers. Vegara’s story doesn’t just capture Maria’s life but holds out a promise of what we all can be.

Martín’s illustrations are fabulous, colorful and vibrant, and they reflect gender, race, and ethnic diversity.

Both young readers and the people who read to them will learn from and enjoy this interesting biography of Maria Montessori, and it would be a great addition to any child’s home library.

The ARC of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The ‘My First Little People, Big Dreams’ series provides informative and inspirational biographies about people who left a mark on this earth, no matter what difficulties they have encountered.
These stories are very short, but that’s because they’re books for children, so it’s totally understandable.
I think they are a very smart and wonderful way to introduce little children to such important figures.
This one is about Maria Montessori, an incredible and amazing woman: in a time when the world was ruled by men, she stood up for herself and became the first woman in Italy to study medicine.
Maria developped a revolutionary educational method in order to help children learn. This method is now used everywhere.
This little book is an adorable way for children to learn about some of the educational methods they use.

Maria Montessori is a new entry in the Little People, Big Dreams series of historical biographies of the childhoods and lives of notable people. I've reviewed a number of the books in this charming series on my blog. This one, about Maria Montessori, introduced me to some facts of which I was previously unaware.

Due out 7th March 2019 from Quarto on their Frances Lincoln imprint, it's 32 pages and available in hardback format.

This is a lovely tribute to a woman who was educated as a medical doctor (the first woman doctor educated in modern times in Italy) and who used her abilities and observational skills to serve some of the most vulnerable children in her society. Considered disposable by her society at the time, she recognized that everyone could be educated and used her skills to make learning fun for the marginalized and institutionalized children of Italy, and later the world.

The text by Isabel Vegara is simple enough to be understood by very young children. The art, by Raquel Martin is colorful and appealing and illustrates the text very well.

Very well done book and a lovely and worthwhile series. It would make a great bedtime read or a reading circle or classroom read for young readers. There's also and included bibliography (not included in the galley proofs) for further reading.

Four stars.

Maria Montessori is one of my favorite humans. Her passion for student learning has been a great inspiration to me. This book does her justice! With beautiful illustrations, Maria's passion can be made known and understood by young readers.

Another wonderful book to promote growth mindset and perseverance. I'd love to read all in this series!!

An interesting and thought-provoking look at one of the world's more innovative and resourceful teachers. Great job!

This is another inspiring entry in the Little People, Big Dreams series. This time the story is about young Maria who was intelligent but found school to be boring when she was young; as a result, she made up games to make her education more fun.

Maria grew up and became the first Italian woman to go to medical school. She combined her medical and educational backgrounds to help some neglected children in the hospital to learn. We adults know that her child centered methods were subsequently embraced the world over.

Young readers who are just starting school will get a sense of how important good teaching is and how it leads to good learning. Hopefully this will encourage them to love their school experience.

As always, the illustrations enhance the story. There are additional facts, photos and resources at the end of the book. (note: they did not come out on the galley)

I would give this an A plus. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher. The opinions are my own.

This was such an interesting person to include in this biography series. My daughter, age 5, asked several questions about why Maria was not allowed to be with the men during her schooling, which led to further discussion beyond the story. This included information about her teaching methods and her journey that led her there. Neat person to have a biography over.

This is from an advance review copy for which I thank the publisher.

This was another in a series of which I've read and reviewed several, nearly all of them positively. This is about a woman who brought a fresh perspective to education, starting with children who had some sort of mental impairment. Back in her day (her real work began at the turn of the century) these children were not well-cared-for and were written-off in terms of assessing their capabilities and futures. Montessori changed this and showed that with the right stimuli, these children had capacity far beyond what they were typically consigned to in life.

The book doesn't cover everything. Notably missing is Montessori's own child which she had 'out of wedlock' as it used to be called. She chose to remain a single mom because had she married the father, she would have been expected to give up her work, which she refused to do. Is this something that very young children need to know? I guess that's up to the parent/guardian and what they think their child can handle, but it's not necessary to include it in a book like this, although her son did end-up assisting her in her work when he grew older.

The book was informative, well-illustrated, and told a good - and true! - story. I commend it as a worthy read.

As expected, this is another great book from the Little People, BIG DREAMS series. The illustrations are beautiful and delicate. The story is nice and easy to follow for young readers, while telling a lot about Maria Montessori. I'm so glad I read it! I knew she developed the Montessori method, but I had no idea she was such an inspiring and smart person.

'Maria Montessori' by Isabel Sanchez Vegara with illustrations by Raquel Martín is about the pioneering teacher and researcher and told in board book format.

Maria Montessori grew up in Italy in a time when girls didn't have the same educational opportunities as boys, but that didn't stop her. She was the first woman in Italy to study medicine. She used what she knew to help children and create good learning environments.

I didn't know much about this person, but thanks to this series, I'd like to learn more. The illustrations are colorful and nice. I like this series.

Isabel Sanchez Vegara’s biography of Maria Montessori, published this week, is the latest installment in the fantastic Little People, Big Dreams series. If you haven’t read any of the books in the series so far, you can start with this one!

The Montessori method of teaching has become increasingly well-known in recent years, with Montessori schools and preschools popping up around the world (their popularity no doubt increased further by the high profile Montessori pupil Prince George!)

The book shines a light on the life of Maria Montessori, starting from her childhood in Italy in the 1870s, where she found her thirst for learning stifled by the traditional schooling methods, and describes how she broke through barriers to achieve her dreams, for instance becoming the first girl in Italy to study medicine. It also details her experiences working with disabled children, who at the time were treated as if they were ill, the founding of her Children’s Homes, and the growing internatonal recognition of her revolutionary teaching methods.

The illustrations are colourful, friendly and show great attention to detail.

I would highly recommend this picture book to all Montessori educators as well as any parents or teachers who want to introduce their children to a truly inspirational female role model.

For this book:
I thought I fairly knew who she was but this picture book, in a few short pages, proved me wrong! Both my kids attended Montessori preschools for a couple of years before we moved them to one that was closer by. We and they enjoyed their time at these schools; as do so many other kids across the world. Maria Montessori, before she developed this worldwide network of schools was the first girl in Italy to study medicine …..:) and I learned this from this LPBD book!

In Summary: (for all the books featured today)
These books are adorable, admirable, and works of art all rolled together with a dose of inspiration for the youngest audiences! Buy the whole set for that little one you know 🙂

I know I am going use these as gifts in the future. And work on reading the others in the series as well soon.

Rating: A; and the board books are for up to 5 years of age while the picture books are for 5 to 8 year olds.

A scrappy little girl loves to learn, but not the way the boring teachers do it. She goes on to become a doctor, but when she’s put in charge of kids who can’t seem to learn, she comes up with a system that works, though at first it seems to consist of letting the kids do it themselves.
I’ve read most of the entries in this series, but this is only the second one where the person was unknown to me (ironically, I can’t remember who the first one was). Maybe that made it a little better, as this lady’s story is indeed inspiring.

This is a small book for young children about a little girl who worked hard to achieve her goals despite experiencing disadvantages for being female. She first became a doctor and later an incredible teacher with ground breaking ideas. Maria Montessori created new, child-focused learning methods and influenced our teaching system until this day. In a few sentences per spread the life of Maria Montessori is narrated in child friendly language. The illustrations are colorful and cute. All in all, an enjoyable and inspiring book.

I am already a huge fan of the Little People Big Dreams series and this one does not disappoint.

As a teacher, I have come across the Montessori schools in research I have carried out and was interested to learn more about the person who started it all.

Told in the now familiar style of a clear, illustrated story of the life of Maria Montessori and some of the challenges she faced, the pictures and clear uncomplicated language make her story accessible to readers of all ages.

I would highly recommend this series to any young reader who has an interest in the lives of people who have influenced the world we live in today.

My daughter and I love this little series of books so I was excited to get Maria Montessori as an eARC. Of course the illustrations are beautiful as always! My daughter really connected Montessori, because she doesn't love school either but does enjoy learning on her own. I think it was helpful for her to see an example of how women can power through adversity and come out on the other side equipped to help others.

This book is another great inspirational addition to the "Little People BIG DREAMS" series. Maria grew up in Italy at a time when girls didn't receive equal education to boys. Her supportive mother saw to it that she got a good education and supported her daughter's dreams. Maria, displaying great intellect, went on to study medicine. Later on in life she became an expert in early childhood education. Her ideas were revolutionary at the time and kids all over the world benefited from them. She made learning interactive and fun and as a result kids began to love learning in these innovative learning centres that Maria founded.

The illustrations are colourful and enrich the simple text. The book includes a mini bio of Maria Montessori to help kids learn more about this creative hands-on educator. If you look around where you live there may be centres using the Montessori method of learning right near you. I highly recommend this book and the whole series.

I enjoyed reading about Maria Montessori in a format that children could engage with. Our children attend a Montessori school and we have a great respect for the Montessori method of education. Our children often come home and ask about Maria Montessori and this book is a really nice resource to have to teach them, in a way they can understand, who Montessori was and how innovative and trailblazing she was. I am excited to read more books in this series!

This book is a children's book sharing the story of Maria Montessori - a pioneering woman who fought for children's rights to play and learn through doing. The illustrations are clear and engaging. The text is accessible and easy to follow. I feel more could have been written about Maria's method of learning through doing but it is a good introduction book suitable for children aged 5-8 years.

Beautiful picture telling the story of a historic woman. A wonderful addition to this series. A selection of these books would be a perfect gift to keep for every for the young reader in your life.

What a fabulous children's introduction to an inspiring woman! I was familiar with the Montessori teaching method, but had no idea that Maria Montessori was Italy's first woman doctor and that she began her method while working with disabled children.

The illustrations are simple and engaging. The author covers many major events in her life, but without the text becoming wordy or losing the interest of young readers.

My reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that on two pages the text is a bit choppy or irregular. I'm not sure if this is an editing error or if it is part of the published book. The text is understandable, but it doesn't flow well.

Another charming book in the Little People series and it tells the story of Maria Montessori. Her philosophy in regards of teaching is amazing and shows that the "one size fits all"-mentality doesn't always work in regards of teaching children.

Maria Montessori is a great choice for the Little People, Big Dreams series. As with all the others, it gives a condensed and accessible account of Maria Montessori's life for young children. She was born in Italy when girls didn't receive the same type of education as boys. As well, the majority of instruction and learning was rote, boring. There was little or no opportunity for creativity or person discovery. After dealing with a lot of barriers, she studied to become the first female in Italy to become a doctor. Working with disabled children, she developed new teaching methods to help them reach their potential. Ideas that are still used today to help children become curious and responsible human beings. This is a great addition to the series, as this informative book gives children the opportunity to learn about someone who worked hard, persevered and dedicated their lives to helping others. Once again the quirky illustrations added much to the story and give the reader/listener a lot to discuss. This series gives today's children many positive role models as well as inspiration to this generation to change the world. I recommend that this book and series be in all public and school libraries.

Until recently, I'd heard of the Montessori method but I didn't really know what it meant. This book lays out the theory in a clearly understood way: learning can be fun; a child learns better when he has some agency; and anyone can learn if you find the right approach. Most importantly, this book points out that Montessori's first students were warehoused handicapped kids. They were never intended to be educated so she had freedom to test her theories. She genuinely cared about and believed in these kids. Her devotion has meant a better life for generations of kids.

Maria Montessori is the reason Montessori schools exist. And while her history and background is very interesting, I wish the book had gotten into just a little detail of why a Montessori school was different from other schools. It does talk about learning stations and play, but not why it is so much different. I think kids who don’t go to a Montessori school, might not realize why this was/is so unusual.

I adore these books, and I love how well the writing and the illustrations go together. Together they tell the story of a famous person’s life, and what they overcame to reach their goals and dreams.
This book tells the story of Maria Montessori.
In this book we hear about how men and women didn’t have the same chance for education, and how one determined woman changed that. It also showed how not everyone learns the same way, and that it is perfectly normal, something that’s important to remember as you grow up and go to school.

This is an excellent series. The people written about in the series aren't your run of the mill children's biography subjects. But they are all intriguing people and make for interesting reading. The illustrations are going to appeal to the kids as well. These books are a good way to broaden their horizons.
