Mahatma Gandhi is a book for young children, introducing them to the famous leader. The text gives enough information to be interesting and educational for its young audience without providing any disturbing information the younger set is not ready for. The illustrations are colorful, with enough detail to spark interest and insure children will want to revisit the story many times.
There are photographs of Gandhi at the end of the book,. Overall, a great introduction to nonfiction in general, and to the historical leader specifically.
An important story told in an approachable way. I would gladly add this book to a classroom or school library. Professionally done.
Another great installment and one that every History and RE teacher should own. The life of Ghandi is one of inspiration, admiration and humility. Every child should have the opportunity to know this biography.
As always, the illustrations complimeng the ongoing story and the time line helps solidify the key events of his life.
Another wonderful book about great people of history, beautifully illustrated and well written. Tells the story of Mohandas Ghandi in a very simple way, so children can understand about this great man. A wonderful book to introduce children to Ghandi and introduce them to further ideas like protest, racism and peace. Another great read this series is wonderful wish we’d had these when I was young
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a free copy for an honest opinion
This series is always a joy to read, it’s a really nice introduction to well known people for little children. Of course the plot is always a little bit fast but that’s to be expected and it’s totally understandable.
I've always been intrigued by Gandhi. So much so that he was actually part of my high school thesis. The fact that he was able to create a peaceful resistance movement is very inspiring. Children would benefit a lot from learning more about this astonishing man who changed so much using just the power of peace.
The ARC of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
The ‘My First Little People, Big Dreams’ series provides informative and inspirational biographies about people who left a mark on this earth, no matter what difficulties they have encountered.
These stories are very short, but that’s because they’re books for children, so it’s totally understandable.
I think they are a very smart and wonderful way to introduce little children to such important figures.
This one is about the great Mahatma Gandhi, the leader of the Indian independence movement against British colonial rule. He was the first one to use non-violence to rise up, and I think this is a very important thing to teach to children.
Cute little book of Gandhi's life and achievements, definitely simplified but book is still enjoyable for older children as well. Definitely interested in checking out the other books including this series!
This is a lovely addition to the range, summarising a period of great turbulent history in a child friendly way, with tact and compassion. We know that aspects of Ghandi could be regarded as problematic, but this book has a shrewd focus,
Very good.
Mahatma Gandhi is a new biography for young readers in the Little People, Big Dreams series. I've reviewed a number of these titles and they all manage to pack an impressive amount of detail in these little books in an age-appropriate and accessible manner.
Due out 2nd May 2019 from Quarto on their Frances Lincoln imprint, it'll be 32 pages and will be available in hardcover, and ebook formats.
Written by Isabel Sánchez Vegara it's well written in clear accessible language. The gentle and sweetly humorous illustrations were well done. I loved the picture of young Gandhi with the dove (see cover illustration). The art by Albert Arrayas is appealing and colorful and supports the text very well. The illustrations are rich in small subtle details which bear a closer look.
Well written and appealing, I am really enjoying all of these little books. This one is a worthy addition.
Five stars. This would make a superlative reading circle book, classroom library book, or gift.
Loved this simple but effective biographical storybook about the life and works of Ghandi. A powerful figure in India. This is a perfect storybook to read to older toddlers and introduce them to famous, revolutionary figures. A must buy!
Thank you Netgalley for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest.
"Mahatma Gandhi" is another quality addition to the "Little People, Big Dream" series. While the history behind Gandhi's revolutionary movements was brutal, unfair and violent, this little book, however, manages to bring out the dark sides of history in a positive way through uplifting text and illustrations. The focus of the book is about Gandhi's determination to reform using the power of peace rather than the power of force. Such a great little book for children to get acquainted with Gandhi. .
I'm sad to say that there was lot in this little children's book that I didn't know or else forgot about Gandhi. Once again Sanchez Vegara does a wonderful job showcasing a great person in history. She makes Gandhi's story understandable for little ones without discounting the truth of it.
I received an advanced copy through Netgalley in return for an honest review.
After copious women, the honour of being third (or is it fourth?) male in this very decent series of books for the very young goes to Mohandas Gandhi, lawyer, campaigner, pacifist and assassination victim. Smoothing over some of that for the very young, this book portrays Gandhi – and his peaceful, ever-present bird avatar – in all stages of his life. Sometimes the artwork is given little to do – ooh, random people – but that's because these books pare the story of these heroic figures back to a little over two hundred words, if that. They do it well, even if I have to agree that the benefit of parental or tutorial expansion into ideas of religious difference and racism might be needed in this instance. It's not a bad primer, however, and that's all this colourful, intelligent series is designed to be.
A very interesting and informative book that young readers would particularly be attracted to due to the vibrant colors and solid information.
This is a lovely addidtion to this series. It is perfect to read to or with young children. The unique illustrations are lovely. Once again, another one of these I have enjoyed.
I love this series! Yet another great addition! I loved the pictures, the simplicity of the text for younger minds - but also how the book still includes details to pique children's interest. Another favorite!
It's a short book, yet tells the story of Gandhi in a nice way for kids. I also liked the illustrations.
This is not one of the books we read very commonly, but, I considered it useful. Do you want to teach your children better? How about teaching them about the importance of waiting, of not paying badly with evil, of seeing for the interests of others, social justice, love of neighbor, humility? ... in this little book you can review the life of Mahatma Gandhi and learn some interesting facts that maybe you do not yet know. You can take advantage of important issues like the ones I mentioned before and interesting questions can also arise, like my 8 year old daughter ... about how they used to find salt before and why it was so important. My 12yo son was near when we read it and he heard and enjoyed it as well, asked some questions about other countries. I'm sure you can take advantage of this kind of historical, biographical books. I think it may be useful for you to know that It is a simple book to read if your children are learning English or if it is not their 1st language.
No es uno de los libros sobre los cuales leemos muy comúnmente, pero, lo consideré útil. ¿Quieres enseñar a tus hijos mejor?
This is a wonderful entry in a wonderful series. With its lovely and appealing illustrations, along with a simple (yet profound) story line, this book gives young readers a chance to learn more about a most impressive man. Even as an adult, I learned things about Gandhi that I had not known while reading this book. Gandhi was a man who stood up (and sat down) for his beliefs in equality and self-government, always invoking peaceful protest. He is a man to be admired.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for another entry in a most favorite series. All opinions are my own.
Another strong title from this great little series of nonfiction biographies for children - and the adults reading to them. (And also worth picking up even if you're an adult with no intentions of reading to children, in my opinion.) It does a great job in condensing the remarkable and inspiring life of Mahatma Gandhi into a short book. I learned a couple of things about his background that I hadn't realized. And the book does a good job of highlighting his approach to injustice, peaceful protest and resistance.
This book gives in a very suitable way a short overview over the live of Mohanda Gandhi. Each page contains wonderful illustrations and a very short and simple text narrating the most important steps on Gandhis way. Even for me this was informative. I never knew that Gandhi went from his studies in Britain first to South Africa. I always thought he was 'active' only in India.
Naturally this book can give only a very abridged version of Gandhis biography, but at least the young reader has heard about this person already and hopefully he/she will learn more about him later at school.
Only the price is a bit high, a tenner would be my limit for a short book like this.
The author of many of the books in Little People, BIG DREAMS series, Maria Isabel Sánchez Vegara is never better than here with her simple prose and well selected words. This gentle story of the life of
Mahatma Gandhi is told without drama and hyperbole; the basic facts reveal the nature of this amazing person and special life.
A clever man he was educated to degree level in London where he graduated in law. He practised in South Africa and found further examples of discrimination, racial injustice and inequality.
He understood being thrown of public transport, echoes of another story. He instigated peaceful demonstration for civil rights. Copied the world over and currently practiced in the U.K with the Extinction Rebellion: London climate protest.
Imprisoned and refusing to eat he was a national hero in his home country India. This gentle man adopted a simple approach to challenge the harsh rule ofcolonial Great Britain attracting support and a following across all religious and political divides, rich or poor.
A person worthy of his place here and what is more here is a wonderful series where the larger collection of books makes for an excellent box set.
A wonderful book with the sweetest illustrations! A brief history of the life of Mahatma Gandhi and a reminder that we can protest things we don't like in a non-violent way. Even adults can learn a lot from this little book. Great for all ages.
Thank you to #NetGalley and The Quarto Group for allowing me to read an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
I received an electronic ARC from Quarto Publishing Group through NetGalley.
Part of the Little People, BIG DREAMS series.
Told in simple language for elementary level readers. Vegara captures the many facets of Gandhi's life and shares them in narrative text. The illustrations support the text and offer background information.
Informative text and timeline at the end of the book.
The father of nonviolent civil disobedience, Gandhi has inspired peace movements throughout the world. In this entry in the Little People, BIG DREAMS series, Vegara shares his story in a narrative appropriate for early readers beginning in childhood, taking them through his education in London, his activist days in South Africa, and his return to India to advocate for freedom for the Indian people. As always in the series, the book ends with an illustration of the child Gandhi reflecting on his dream and how he achieved it.
Mahatma Gandhi is inspiring for its message of peace, equality, and compassion and also for conveying that any child can, with drive and courage, meet his or her dreams. Perhaps it would have been even more impactful to include his beliefs about women’s empowerment and animal welfare, but the book’s themes are potent nonetheless.
The easy-to-read text is combined with delightful illustrations. I particularly enjoy the dove that follows Gandhi through childhood and can be found on each spread as as faithful companion. The illustrations are very appropriate to the story and appealing to children, but they aren’t my favorite illustrations in the series. It might be just me, but I was a little off-put by the way that people’s noses were drawn.
In any case, Gandhi is a worthwhile figure for any child to know as his message of peace, equality, and love is universal and desperately needed. Mahatma Gandhi is the perfect introduction to this amazing man for early readers.
"sometimes the power of peace is more important than the power of force"
.
I love how this short books are so inspiring even for adults.
This one is my 5th in the series and it didn't disappoint, I would give this books to any child, this are the type of books all kids should be reading!
The Little People, Big Dreams series is such a lovely idea to introduce young children to people who made an impact on social changes. The illustrations are wonderful and the information given is very simple to comprehend. Although there is way more to cover on Gandhi. the author focused on main events of his life. The short timeline at the end was a nice addition.
I love these little books, I think they are such a great idea for children, or anyone who wants to know interesting little bits of information about interesting people.
The pictures are great, and they are short enough that they will hold a child's attention.
I really enjoy each installment of the Little People, Big Dreams collection. This new addition summarizes the journey of Mahatma Gandhi from a young age through adulthood. Elementary level children can learn how to settle their problems and disputes in a non-violent manner, as Gandhi shows how nonviolent protests can be effective.
*Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.*
This book is part of the "Little People, Big Dreams" series. It is a nice, simple introduction to life of Mahatma Gandhi. The illustrations and narrative is perfect to capture the attention of children (mine are 8 & 10yo), with just enough information to educate without overwhelming. Now they not only recognize the name Mahatma Gandhi, but they also know a little bit about this important person in history.
I LOVE these little books! What a fantastic series this is!
Like the David Bowie book I reviewed a couple of days ago, Mahatma Gandhi is brightly and cheerfully illustrated while the words tell the story of a truly special soul. There are many instances for discussion in this book and lessons for learning.
And the last sentence, illustrated with Gandhi as a boy a dove perched on his hand says:
And Mahatma, the little boy with the very big heart, gave a single lesson to those who hope for a brighter future: sometimes the power of peace is greater than the power of force.
What a hopeful message!
The Amazon webpage for this book has some of the pages and illustrations for viewing so that you can see the vibrancy of these pictures and words.
I think this would be a wonderful series to share with your child or as a gift.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Another in a children's 'Little People, Big Dreams' series which I've been following, this one tells a great story. Anyone who's watched the Richard Attenborough movie starring Ben Kingsley, and written by John Briley will realize how important it is for young children to be introduced to people like Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi as opposed to an excess of superhero movies where people typically beat the pulp out of one another. Not that those aren't fun in their place, but let's not ever take them seriously as solutions to problems!
Naturally a life like Bapu's cannot be adequately captured in a book of this nature, but I felt that author Vegara does a fine job in distilling the important stuff. This book, delightfully illustrated by Albert Arrayas, follows Ghandi's life from childhood through university in London, to South Africa and back to India, and it explains his philosophy and where it came from. For young children, that's an important start. I commend it.
This is a fantastic read for young children to learn more about the life of Mahatma Gandhi. It does remarkably well at simplifying the historical and political aspects of the story. It ultimately brings across the idea of peace being the greatest "weapon" you have to use and it does so in an effective way. I have read a few of these books now and they have all been charming and sweet.
The illustrations add to it all and make it an absolute must for young children. And it's important to teach them about these important figures in a way they can understand and appreciate.
This is another great book to add to the Little People, Big Dreams collection!
I love this series as they are perfect introductions to young people about some of the most famous and influential people from our past and present and are also a reminder about how these people have also changed our history.
5 stars from me for this one, very highly recommended and can't wait for my daughter to get involved in the series and for me this book is a much for any children's library
Another great book from the series 'Little People. Big Dreams.' I love this series and think the books are essential for influencing children as they grow. This particular book follows Mahatma Gandhi. It is a simple overview of his life, with interesting facts and quirky illustrations. Although the illustrations weren't to my taste, I thought they were very powerful and showed rather than told Gandhi's actions. The story explains how Gandhi grew up in a Hindu family, moving to London as a teenager to study and then to South Africa to work as a lawyer. He witnessed and was a victim of injustice because of his race. He was passionate about equality and wanted to protest in his own way - peacefully. And so began a resistance movement like no other. He moved back to India with the determination to lead his country out of the hands of the British Empire. He did not use violence or his expensive lifestyle to make a difference. Instead, he became one of his own and continued to lead peaceful protests. This single line sums up Gandhi's life and is a brilliant message for children and adults: 'Sometimes the power of peace is greater than the power of force.'
This is another empowering and educational read that teaches children about the importance of standing up for what is right and promoting equality. It also highlights the positive impact peaceful protesting can have and strongly discourages the need for violence. Gandhi was an inspiration and this book does an amazing job at showing that.
Another amazing book, with great use of images and colour to show the story of Mahatma Gandhi. Loved how simple the story was but very relatable and understandable.
I love this series! Not only will your children learn a lot, but so will you! I plan to showcase them on my blog soon. Enjoyable to read and highly educational.
This series (based solely on the covers of the other books in it and the content of this one) seems to aim for consistency and is driven by the beautiful illustrations. This book in particular told Gandhi's life in detail, filling in tidbits that I didn't know. It had good moral lessons and had levels of detail appropriate to young readers. My daughter (7) said she liked it which seems to be due to the well written narrative and not overly academic tone.
On the possibly negative side, it did leave out most of the horrible stuff Britain did that caused Gandhi to protest. Though this is appropriate for young readers it makes it harder to extend this book's age range to teenagers.
'The power of peace is greater than the power of force'.
A powerful and insightful book for the little ones. The illustrations are lovely and the story Gandhi is perfectly narrated.
Another great book from this great collection for children.
I just love this little books. They are packed it Lovely illustrations and information about a famous person. This book by Isabel Sanchez Vegara, and Albert Arrayas is about Gandhi. Every picture tells a story and would make a good project for children in the classroom at school, so they can learn about this great person.
I highly recommend all of these little books By The Little People, Big Dreams series.
I received a DIGITAL Advance Reader Copy of this book from #NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
'Mahatma Gandhi (Little People, Big Dreams)' by Ma Isabel Vegara with illustrations by Albert Arrayas is a picture book in a series about famous people.
Mahatma, born Mahandas, was a little boy with a big heart. His mother taught him to be honest. When he was older, he went to school in London. He took his law degree to South Africa to work as a lawyer, but found prejudice there. His first protest was there in the middle of the street. It became the first peaceful resistance movement. From there he went back to India and more peaceful, gentle protest.
This is such a beautifully told story. I love the sweet drawings of a gentle child who became a world leader. The book includes a timeline. I have appreciated almost every book in this series I've read.
I received a review copy of this ebook from Quarto Publishing Group - Frances Lincoln Childrens, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this ebook.
The Little People, Big Dreams series shares the lives of extraordinary people through adorable, quirky illustrations and simple language. Each person represented has had an incredible impact on the world, but started life as a child with a dream.
Another wonderful little release from Mª Isabel Sánchez Vegara. The book, like all of the series, is very short but given these books are for children, it's completely understandable. In fact, Vegara does a particularly great job in this case of condensing the remarkable and inspiring life of Mahatma Gandhi into a short story.
I loved the cute illustrations and the gentle language used to describe an equally as gentle man. Of course there are parts of Gandhi's life not explored here but this book is for children after all, and the ultimate message reflected here is one of love and humanness.
"And Mahatma, the little boy with the very big heart, gave a single lesson to those who hope for a brighter future: sometimes, the power of peace is greater than the power of fore."
I enjoyed this book immensely and learned a couple of things about Gandhi's background that I didn't know before. What a wonderful way to highlight for children Gandhi's approach to injustice, peaceful protest and resistance. Recommended for your 'little library'!
Another wonderful book in the Little People big Dreams series, I have to admit to having known very little about Gandhi before reading this little book and I feel much more informed now.
In the now familiar picture book style with accessible language this is a great introduction to this peaceful activist and I wouldn’t hesitate to use this book in the classroom if I were to teach about him as part of topic work in school. This is certainly one I will be looking to add to our school library.
My Thoughts
I have read a few of the LPDB books already and enjoyed each and every one of them. This book is another one worthy of the series. Mahatma Gandhi was (one of) the first great leaders we grew up knowing. Initially, it thrilled us that we had a holiday on his birthday, and later we learned to respect and honor the day.
This book, like the others in the series, tells us the story of the featured person. It does so with the perfect combination of easy to understand language for the early reader, details and facts that relay the salient information about the Mahatma (with focus on his message of peace and his path to it), and colorful, bright illustrations that appeal to the eye. The recurring appearance of the messenger of peace – a pigeon – across the pages is a quaint and clever touch!
In Summary
This simplified (to be expected with intended target audience) yet elegant introduction to Mahatma Gandhi is a good addition to the series; and to classroom libraries.
Rating: B+
Reading Level: 6 – 10 years
Disclaimer: Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the digital review copy of the little guides featured today. All opinions are my own.
This was another very sweet and educational little book.
I don't know what I can say about it what I haven't yet said about the other books in the series. The illustrations are super cute, and again this "everyone who has ever achieved something big has started out as a little boy/girl" approach brings the story closer to children. This is the way we should teach them all! I love this series.
I rated this book 4 strong stars.
I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I'm a huge fan of these books. I think every child should read the series.
I can't say as I really knew much about Gandhi. I knew of him, of course, but not much about his life. Like how he'd lived in South Africa and had been a lawyer. While this book doesn't provide much detail, you can't go wrong introducing inspiration figures to our youngest readers.
These are perfect biographies to read to younger children, They are simple enough to understand and not too wordy.
I continue to be impressed by the Little People, Big Dreams series. Each book in the series shares the lives of an extraordinary person, who had an amazing impact on the world. The thing they have in common is that they all had a dream as a child.
I think most people have heard about Gandhi, the leader of the Indian independence movement against British colonial rule. He used non-violence to rise up, and fight injustice. This is a children's book and it is a simple introduction to Gandhi. It does not tell us everything he did, but used his peaceful protesting to teach a very important lesson to children. I love the quirky illustrations and simple language found on each page. I learned some things about his background that I did not know before. Once again, this series for young children demonstrates that you are never to young to have a dream or to begin working to make it a reality. I recommend this book and series to all elementary school libraries.
Another great edition to the Little People, Big Dreams family. The author does a good job of including important information regarding Ghandi. At times, it is a little advanced as far as concepts like peaceful protest and mentions Ghandi not eating. Although it doesn't go into much detail, there is a lot of discussion that can be had after reading.
This tells a quick history of Mahatma Gandhi's life in a fun an approachable way for little ones. I loved the illustrations and the way they were able to incorporate a lot of information in quite a simplistic way.
I work in an elementary school library and the 3rd graders do biography projects every year. While I probably wouldn't suggest this title for their only source of information, I would absolutely suggest this as a way to get a brief overview of the person to decide if they'd want to learn more. I also struggle to find biographies for my younger students or those who are at a lower reading level so I'd be happy to stock my biography section with this series.

“And Mahatma, the little boy with the very big heart, gave a single lesson to those who hope for a brighter future: sometimes, the power of peace is greater than the power of force.”
*My Goodreads review has an illustration captioned: Little Mohandas playing while his mother spins
This is a very brief summary of the life of one of the world’s greatest activists for non-violent resistance. It touches on only a very few parts of his life but could serve as the basis for more story-telling if children seem interested.
Gandhi’s mother taught him to be honest and to care for all living things. At 19, he went to England to study and had to learn English ways.
*My Goodreads review has an illustration captioned: Gandhi having tea in England
He then went to South Africa to work as a lawyer, and quickly learned that he wasn’t allowed to mix with whites. He decided to protest against injustice and began a silent sit-in in the street. He was joined by others, but he certainly wasn’t appreciated by the authorities!
*My Goodreads review has an illustration captioned: Gandhi, joined by others in a peaceful protest
He stayed in South Africa for 20 years, protesting peacefully, but he wanted to go home to help India shake off the British rule.
*My Goodreads review has an illustration captioned: Gandhi disembarking into a very British India
He decides to shed his fancy lawyer’s clothing and dress like a simple man of the people. The illustrations show him seeming quite pleased with his new, modified look. I have to say, there is a real appeal about finding a basic uniform and sticking to it!
*My Goodreads review has an illustration captioned: Gandhi, checking his new look
He continued gathering a following of people who were willing to protest peacefully and join him in quiet acts of rebellion against the British. The British were not pleased and put him in jail! As his last attempt at protest, he stopped eating.
*My Goodreads review has an illustration captioned: Gandhi on a hunger strike
Of course, the government had no choice but to release him, and the crowds cheered! He went on to be called “Mahatma”, meaning “great soul”, and he’s known all over the world for his peaceful protest against injustice.
*My Goodreads review has an illustration captioned: Mahatma Gandhi, as the world came to know him, writing by his famous spinning wheel
I loved this little book with its particularly delightful illustrations. I was surprised more wasn’t shown of his famous spinning wheel. This photograph, taken in 1946 by well-known photographer Margaret Bourke-White, shows him spinning, as he did for an hour every morning at 4am, so we are told.
*My Goodreads review has an illustration captioned: Gandhi spinning
All of the illustrations include what I think is a cheery little Peace Dove. I imagine you’ll agree with me when you see this last piece of art.
*My Goodreads review has an illustration captioned: Little Mohandas Ghandi, contemplating with the birds
The last pages of the book have real photographs and a short article of about 250 words summarising his life and explaining that Britain did formally leave India and that sadly, in 1948, one of his many enemies succeeded in killing him. Just as well the illustrations finished before that.
It’s a lovely addition to the Little People BIG DREAMS series to give very young children some good food for thought. I suspect it will prompt some teachers, parents, and others to learn a bit more, too. These are great conversation starters, and kids could begin by finding the little bird in each picture.
Thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing / Frances Lincoln Children’s Books for the preview copy for review.
Mahatma Gandhi by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara explores the life of a man who would become known as the father of India. Born Mohandas Gandhi, from a young age, he was a bit of a rebel, bucking against his parents' beliefs and values. (What child doesn't?) As an adult, he recognized the benefit of those beliefs and values. Gandhi saw the injustices Empire had wrought in his country, and began to lead peaceful protests with the goal of ending British rule. His actions helped free and unite the country, earning him the name Mahatma, meaning 'great soul'. The end of the book contains a more detailed look at Gandhi's life, using language suited for much older readers. Inspirational and educational both, this entire series is great! I read this with my cubs. We love this series! Highly recommended!
***Many thanks to the Netgalley & Quarto Publishing for providing an egalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.
This is an excellent series. The people written about in the series aren't your run of the mill children's biography subjects. But they are all intriguing people and make for interesting reading. The illustrations are going to appeal to the kids as well. These books are a good way to broaden their horizons.
