Description
A charming and magical graphic novel based on Louisa May Alcott's LITTLE WOMEN! Jo, Beth, Amy, and Meg March are four sisters living in Concord with their parents—Father, who's tending to soldiers fighting in the Civil War, and Marmee, who teaches the girls simple but effective witchcraft. The Marches have to keep their craft quiet, as there are many in Concord who see magic in a bad light—especially after things have begun disappearing. When Mr. Laurence, a witchfinder, moves in next door to investigate the missing objects, the girls fear for their livelihood. But he turns out to be a kind old man, and his grandson, Laurie, quickly befriends the Marches. As the cold winter blusters on, the girls continue their education, even as missing objects soon turn into missing people. Things take a turn for the worse when Jo and Laurie try investigating on their own, and a dangerous storm takes hold of Concord. There's powerful magic at play here—stronger than anything the Marches, or even Laurie, has ever seen before. Can they hope to defeat it? Or has the magic already become too strong for them to fight against?

Little Witches: Magic in Concord is a graphic novel adaptation of the classic, Little Women. This version of the story contains magic, lots of it. The March family are mages/witches who have good, useful magic. Mr. Laurence and Laurie are witch finders who hunt down bag witches. The two families get along since the Marches are not evil. Many things around Concord have gone missing and there may be magic behind it. When Marmee and Mr. Laurence are both gone, Jo and Laurie must try to figure out the mystery and fight against an unexpected source of dark magic. I would recommend this for anyone who likes the original story or likes stories about magic.
This graphic novel is adorable! I hope that it's going to be a series, because it's really lovely seeing the March girls come to life on the page, and the inclusion of magic is just perfect. The vibe of the original is kept, but having the girls be witches makes this feel almost like a Stephanie Burgis or Mary Robinette Kowal novel - cosy but original.
The artwork is gorgeous, with a really perfect colour scheme and lots of really temptingly-drawn snow! It would be a really lovely book to read with a kid, or to curl up with on a wintry afternoon on your own.
How charming! I love how whimsical it was and the different perspective on a timeless classic!
I would like to thank the author/publisher/Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
A wonderful graphic novel that manages to combine a compelling narrative and illustrations to create a wonderful experience for the reader.
This book offers a clever juxtaposition of classic literature, high fantasy, and beautiful illustration. Oni publishes quality material and Little Witches is another in a line of captivating books. Love!
This updated fantasy take on Little Women is adorable! The fantasy aspects are seamless, the way the characters are integrated into the world of magic fits their personalities, and the story resolves nicely.
The author did a very nice job of connecting the power dynamics of slavery to that of magic wielders misusing their powers. It was a great way to take us to this fantasy world without completely ignoring the realities of the real world.
Very nice.
