Well, this is so much fun! The animals really do look cute, I love the use of different patterns. I just wish the how to draw part was more detailed, using shapes instead of just showing lines and then it's done.

Draw 62 Animals and Make Them Cute is a tutorial doodle-art/drawing guide by Heegyun Kim. Released 26th March 2019 by Quarto on their Quarry imprint, it's 128 pages and available in paperback format.

I'm a huge fan of drawing tutorial books and collect them like crazy despite not being (in my own estimation) gifted artistically. This makes me especially appreciative of art books and techniques suited to beginning artists.This little book is exactly as described. There are step by step tutorials for 62 different animals with different variations and poses for each one. There is a 'you try it' balloon on each page for reader drawings.

This would make a great gift for would-be artists of all ages. The included animal tutorials are varied and eclectic with appearances from alpacas (see cover) to pufferfish and capybaras. There is no additional introductory technique or materials instruction; the book just includes the 62 animals. There is a complete table of contents, so locating individual animals shouldn't be problematic. The tutorials are slanted toward line drawings, though colored pens, crayons, and watercolors could certainly be used to enhance the line drawings.

Cute book, accessible for everyone.

Five stars.

Draw 62 Animals and Make Them Cute takes you step to drawing a variety of animals. The walkthroughs are textless, and I prefer just having photos if I had to choose between pictures or words. There are a handle fll f tips through out the book, in case you are a word reader.

After the basic animal walkthrough, a page includes inspiration of each anima encouraging you to use your imagination to go past the basic drawing. This book made it easy for me to break down these drawing and have a good time while drawing.

I received a digital Advance Reader Copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Draw 62 Animals and Make Them Cute is exactly that...an easy-to-follow, step-by-step guide to drawing 62 adorable animals. But on top of that Heegyum Kim points out what makes these animals appear so cute and teaches you how to to do it. So in addition to copying the animals shown in the book you'll be able to create your own loveable critters! Plus Heegyum Kim's illustration style is delightful (definitely check her out on Instagram if you haven't already).

I'd recommend this book for anyone learning to draw or wanting practice in drawing cute illustrated animals.

This book is absolutely adorable. Perfect for anybody who loves to doodle, sketch or paint.
I wanted to review this because I love painting in gouache and the cute 2D animal illustrations are perfect for that.
The only thing that could be improved would be to teach readers what makes a character cute (large eyes, expressions, etc.) and to teach them a bit more how to create their own characters with simple forms instead of copying the examples.
Not sure if this was marketed for beginners specifically.

Thank you Netgalley for providing me with an eARC.

Draw 62 Animals and Make Them Cute made my smile at every page turn. The assortment of animals is delightful and fun! The book is a collection of step by step line drawing visual instructions to draw each animal and then creative ways to make them cute. The author has included many helpful tips to make your drawing unique, including how to create expressive eyes and portraying texture from simple line work. The only thing I think that could be improved is to have material suggestions included. I highly recommend this for the budding artist or doodler in your life.
Thank you NetGalley!

Yes! Delightful step-by-step doodles great for kids and adults alike. These would make great doodles in a bullet journal. Such a fun variety of animals too! I am no great artist but I was able to draw these with no problems! I that that steps are not too involved and don't require an art degree to decipher or even the ability to draw a perfect circle. I also really enjoyed how it showed how simple pen strokes can add so much character and texture.
I will definitely be buying this for Middle School/Teen collection

I want this book for myself! But it would also be a wonderful and engaging resource for children. Because of the cute and quirky nature of the drawings, kids (and adults!) who might not usually be "good" at drawing, can create great looking doodles. Myself included!

The variance of animals including is fantastic. There are quirky animals that you would not expect in a "normal" drawing book: alpaca, wombat, armadillo. There are also extremely specific animals that you would not expect: corgi, anglerfish, and java sparrow. Each animal includes one page with a step-by-step drawing guide, and one page called "Make it cute" with variances on the original. Many are giggle worthy.

Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher for "granting my wish" and allowing me to review this advanced reading copy.

Very cute ideas on ways to draw some popular animals and how to customize them to your liking by adding little touches and embellishments.

I've been following the author of this book on Instagram, and I was excited when she mentioned she'd be writing this book - and I was even more excited to get early access to it via NetGalley!

The author provides a brief, welcoming introduction which will be appreciated by people new to drawing or those who feel intimidated by it.

She also describes how the book is organized. On the left page are step by step drawings that show how to draw the animal. On the right page are drawings of the same animal in different styles, different positions, and/or with different media (most of the drawings are done with black pen). Scattered throughout the book are tips which can be applied to several animals (like ways to draw fur or feathers).

I only have one minor complaint about the book. As I said above, most of the drawings are done with black pen. If a second color (like red) was used to show the new parts, that would make it easier to see what has been added at each step. I have seen a similar use of red ink in other art tutorials, such as "step outs" for individual Zentangle patterns.

Very cute little book of doodles. I did not find them very difficult to do, and I usually struggle with art instructions. I like that the instructions were very detailed and used pictures as well as word.

This was a cute drawing book with very simple drawings of a wide variety of animals. The initial drawings of the animals are shown in 5-6 steps and those are fairly clear and easy to follow.

Each animal is followed by a 'make it cute' page and that's where it could have used a lot more instruction. The drawings were undeniably cute, but how to put the animals in different positions while keeping perspective wasn't addressed at all.

Probably best for someone with a natural artistic perspective eye, though someone just learning to draw could follow the basic designs easily enough.

This book is full of cartoon animals that are adorable just to look at even if you never plan to draw them. For the first cartoon of each animal in this book, the author shows in a stepwise fashion how to draw the final image. I was slightly misled by the "and make them cute" part of the title into thinking that a bunch more cute-making details would be added on to the original drawing as additional steps that readers could follow. In fact, the "cute' part consists of several more entirely different final images of the same animal drawn in a cuter manner--but lacking any stepwise instruction. In a number of instances the cuter animals are so different in pose or angle that it would be impossible to use any of the original guidelines to draw them, so basically you probably aren't going to learn to draw the cuter creatures from this book. I enjoyed just looking at the talented author's drawings and not worrying about replicating any. There were occasional little guidelines in the step-by-step section giving advice on how to achieve the overall effect of fur, feathers, etc. Some similar advice would have been helpful in explaining in general terms what makes us find something cute, so that readers wanting to invent their own original cute-animal characters might develop the tools to draw them. Instead, we are treated to a gallery of undeniably adorable creatures, including some unlikely candidates for cuteness--who knew a narwhal could be so cute?

This is a great fun little book. Perfect for all budding artists to help build confidence. The pictures are so easy to follow that even young children could have a go. I love the way the book is laid out. The steps are so clear, well spaced, and very easy to replicate. Then you get a page of variations for each animal. The best thing is that the pages are not cluttered with text, only a little 'tip' box where relevant.. Overall a well designed book full of doodling fun.

With 131 pages of different animals to draw and adapt to make them really cute, this book is a winner for anyone that like to doodle or sketch. Lots of examples and tips and information on how to add character and expression.
Well illustrated with simple line sketches. There are Llamas, kangaroos, koalas, whales, chicken, fish, dogs and many, many more to play with.

This book gives step by step instruction for an animal then has a bunch of variations of that animal on he adjacent page. The steps may omit a few things, but you can pretty mush figure it out. The doodles were really great! The “make cute” part wasn’t just adding hats or glasses or something but showed different poses or expressions or different shadings etc.

The picture is two cards I made, in one case the image had the panda holding bamboo but I made it a noisemaker and the octopus was holding a book and I put in a present box. These doodles were great bases to use for various drawings.

Thanks to the publisher and netgallery for the digital ARC to review.

This book sort of does what it aims for...just sort of also misses the mark a tiny bit. DRAW 62 ANIMALS AND MAKE THEM CUTE is attempting to provide a jumping off point for your imagination. There are step-by-step instructions for how to draw each of the animals, but then it says "Make it cute" and shows you a few different positions, but never explains how to do those addons to the original animal. For more advanced beginners, great...for a beginner, maybe it needs just a touch more.

Adorable book. Simple, easy to follow. Good for kids and adults alike. Would recomend to everyone wanting to draw cartoon like animals.

Draw 62 Animals and Make Them Cute is much more than your usual assortment of animals to draw as there are some unusual ones, such as a wombat, tapir, chinchilla, mole, sloth, weasel, etc With 62 animals to choose from, I am sure you will find plenty you like and that are worthy of drawing.

For each animal, Kim provides step-by-step tutorials and then approximately 5-8 variations to make them cute and give them some personality. Some of these additional versions are so sweet and adorable that it’s just fun to look at them. Cute variations include different poses, varying expressions, some dialogue or thoughts, different accessories, and a variety of actions such as eating, dancing, standing, reading, etc. You can learn a lot just by looking at the cute versions — seeing how these different poses are drawn as well as other patterns, textures, and design elements. They are sure to inspire you with drawing that animal or to use with some of the other 61 animals. I loved how Kim uses different kinds of lines and patterns within one animal as well as in the different variations, such as in the case of the armadillo. Some of my favorite cute variations included the hippo dancing, the sheep knitting, a turtle lifting weights, and a fox on a scooter. Note that while Kim does not provide step-by-step tutorials on the cute variations, once you have mastered the particular animal, it will just involve some tweaking and practice to get the other version right. After all, it won’t be like starting the other version from scratch.

Kim gives useful tips throughout the book — for example, how to draw fur, add personality, exaggerate anatomy, etc. With 62 animals and roughly 6 cute variations, there’s over 400 drawings to keep you busy and to practice in order to improve your drawing skills. I definitely recommend this book and plan to purchase it as soon as it becomes available.

Thank you to Quarto Publishing Group — Quarry Books and NetGalley for an advance reader copy that expires in exchange for my honest review.

Draw 62 animals
I've been following Heegyum kim on instagram and was quite excited when I learnt about this book. It doesn't disappoint. In Kim's unmistable style, these animals are incredibly cute. I like that there are step-by-step drawings that guide you to the final illustration. Even without it, this book is a valuable and fun reference for artists, illustrators and doodlers who would like to get familiar with illustrating cute animals.I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I love this book. I have been using it to draw pictures to add to my journal and to draw pictures for the children to colour in. They are fun, easy to follow and genuinely adorable animals. I love how you get step by step instructions and then the next page shows you how to alter them to customise for yourself. Fantastic drawing guide.

Fantastic drawing book! Easy enough for a non-artist (me) to follow, to help my 5-year old son (a budding artist). He gives this book 2 thumbs up!

Was this review helpful?

This is a darling book with really easy to follow doodles of how to draw (you guessed it) 62 different animals and make them look cute. I tried five of them as I was reading it and really loved the results, and I don't always do well at following along with drawing tutorials. And yes, they really do look cute.

I like that the author did simple drawings and they weren't perfect. The drawings are in pencil or ink and there are often scuff marks and quick little circles and such. It made it much easier to just quickly do my own version, not trying to copy a drawing that looked like a professional sketch that took an hour. I also liked the variations provided for each animal to see other angles and such to draw them.

There were a few animals that didn't really look like the supposed animal, like the squirrel looked more like a guinea pig to me (one of the variations looked like a chipmunk). I was able to see how easily the author did the sketches that I felt pretty comfortable in just doing it myself in a way that seemed more squirrel-like, though.

This would make a great book for kids to learn how to draw simple animals and feel confident in their artistic skills, and also for adults who want to doodle but don't want 20-step instructions. I may purchase a copy for our family.

My rating system:
1 = hated it
2 = it was okay
3 = liked it
4 = really liked it
5 = love it, plan to purchase, and/or would buy it again if it was lost

I read a temporary digital ARC of the book for the purpose of review.

This is a great little book for kids or for people who want a little help getting started in drawing animals. The author breaks down 62 animals into component shapes to show step-by-step how to draw each animal, and then takes it a step further by showing a handful of ways to expand upon that base shape to "make it cute".

I loved her use of pattern as a design element, and ended up doodling a few birds while flipping through. :)

The artwork of this title is fresh and fun! I wish that there were more than 62 Animals. I believe this book will help artists of all level and abilities with their art. The spot color really pops and the animals chosen were unique.
