What a brilliant book! I love Nicci French novels so was excited about reading this one and I was straight into it, turning the pages, worrying about Neve and the terrible situation she was in. It is cleverly paced and plotted - as you would expect from Nicci French! The tension builds and builds. There is the best, most catastrophic dinner party scene that would put you off entertaining friends for life! I could relate to Neve, mother of three, worried about her fragile daughter Mabel, trying to keep family life going as well as a busy job. I felt as though I was there with Neve, wondering if anyone had remembered to feed the guinea pig and knowing this was highly unlikely. All the time, there’s a major drama happening and the tension is increasing. Her family life is under threat and only she can save it. She has a husband and good friends but who can she trust?
This is a very enjoyable book. It’s original and full of suspense. I highly recommend it.
I have read most of the novels (somehow I’ve missed a few) by Nicci French and they have never disappointed and this one certainly didn’t. An exceptional read with numerous twists and turns which kept me on the edge of my seat and unable to put down.
Neve Connelly is married, three children with one about to go to university, works part time with three people she knew from college. Her husband, Fletcher, works from home although it appears as if he is earning very little. Their relationship used to be strong.
Neve is having an affair with one of her bosses from work, who is also married. It has not been going on for long but she is smitten. One morning, over breakfast she receives a text message, which she assumes is from him to meet up again. Unexpected but she doesn’t hesitate even though she thought he was away at a conference.
She lets herself into his London flat to find him dead with his head caved in and a hammer lying next to him. This is where Neve begins making decisions, which are going to radically change her life forever. Who killed her lover, who knew about her visit and who can she trust? I will stop there, as I do not want to give anything else away.
Amazingly well plotted with some characters I loved and others I hated. As the secrets begin to unfold it becomes clear that not all the relationships are what they appear on the surface. The writing and direction led me in so many different directions and there were times when I wanted to shout at the characters to tell them what was happening.
Thank you to NetGalley, Simon and Schuster UK and Nicci French for my ARC in return for my honest review.
A must read, highly recommended.
Neve finds her lover murdered and tries to remove all sign of herself from his life. Friends, colleagues and family all circle around and her struggle to stay on top of her lies and work out what's happening deepen.
A really good solid psychological crime novel with characters that really breath and live. I literally couldn't put it down and was 30 mins late for dinner.
It’s been a long time since this author had a book out so I was very excited to have a chance to read it early. It didn’t disappoint. A cracking thriller!
This was a fantastic read with lots of twists and turns which had me page turning until it’s nail biting ending.
Neve Connelly is a wife, mother and friend to many. She feels trapped in her marriage to Fletcher and her teenage daughter Mabel is troubled and causing problems for both her parents.
Neve embarks on a affair with a married colleague which seems to give her the excitement and happiness she has been missing.
When events overtake her she finds the discovery of her colleagues murdered body throws her life and choices into turmoil. What should she do next? Should she do the right thing which will uncover her secrets? Will this destroy her family? How can she protect her loved ones? Who is the murderer?
The choices she makes have spiralling consequences. It shows that one decision and lie automatically leads to a multitude of tangled secrets. .
As the murder is uncovered Neve’s nerve is tested to the limit. DCI Hitching seems intent on uncovering the murderer and along with her lovers wife, his work assistant and Neve’s old university friends it seems no one is beyond suspicion.
The book displayed the devastating consequences of secrets and lies! There discovery inevitably brings consequences which touch the lives of not only the perpetrator but those around them as well.
A truly compelling read which had me hooked until the end. Very well plotted with great characters.
Thank you to netgalley and Simon and Schuster Uk for my chance to read this highly recommended read .
I wasn't quite sure what to expect with this one. I'm a bit wary as a rule of the huge torrent of domestic thrillers that seem to arrive on our shelves constantly but this was much classier than most with some great twists and turns. I really enjoyed it!
The Lying rRoom is a true page turner .So many layers so many twists and turns Nicci French’s characters come alive makes you feel like these are people you know and you can’t stop reading till you solve the murder,Grab this book a true psychological thriller, #netgalley #simonscusteruk
Nicci French is one of my fave authors and she does not disappoint in this tense novel. Neve, a married woman has a brief affair with her boss Saul. One day on an assignment to meet him at his flat, she arrives to find him murdered. She goes into a panic and immediately begins to conceal evidence of the affair, beginning the start of many lies. She lies to the police, Inspector Hitching who is constantly on her back. She deceives her husband and 3 children. Lies to her work colleagues and her circle of friends. There is so much lying that I thought Neve deserved a medal!! She is on edge as she works out somebody knew about the affair and then goes on to find the killer.
A gripping read.
Fantastic. Unable to put it down. Full of twists and turns and a real detective thriller. Fully recommend
This is a standalone novel from the husband and wife duo who have written many other good books. Therefore I was very excited to have the opportunity to read their latest offering. This is another well written gripping book that 'forces' you to keep reading beyond the time of night it is possible to do so! A tangled web of lies that it becomes more and more impossible to get out is the situation that the main character Neve has got herself into. Will she get out of it? What is she trying to get out from and why? Well you'll have to read it to find out!
As I have come to expect from the Nicci French portfolio, Murder; twisting plots; blind alleys,; who was the perpetrator. I followed slavishly lapping up each carefully crafted word. The daughter was the most intriguing character. How did she work it out?
As usual I thought at the end that I must have missed something along the way. I should have known. Still I'll read it again and try to see what happened that I missed.
This book is brilliant! It should also put anyone who reads it off ever having an affair. It tells the story of Neve, who finds her lover murdered, then gradually realises she is being set up to be arrested for the murder. Neve does seems to have quite an annoying bunch of selfish friends from her university days, but her teenage daughter is a character who will resonate with any parent. The first third of the book is particularly tense, I couldn't put it down. Highly recommended.
Brilliant read, couldn't put it down, if you are into crime or thrillers set in uk then you can't go wrong with Nicci French, never fails to deliver, if you don't believe me " Ask Neve".
Nicci French never disappoints. This book is a twisting who done it after Neve stumbles into a murder scene and attempts to keep her secrets hidden as she makes mistake after mistake trying to work our who the murderer is and why they seem to be framing her.
A perfectly pitched psychological thriller here from Nicci French, with very strong domestic drama elements and a twisty as you like storyline that is immediately involving.
I read this in one sitting, so caught up in the life of cleverly written main protagonist Neve, who faced with the dead body of her lover tries to extricate herself from a dangerous situation..
An ever more tangled web is woven as Neve tries to protect her family and herself, this is a highly engaging and extraordinarily addictive read, often unexpected and with an intelligent conclusion.
Some of my favourite parts involved Neve versus Inspector Hitching, those portions crackled with tension in a kind of cat and mouse chase with no real indication who might come out on top.
Overall a really great read. One for your October lists not to be missed. Don’t worry. I’ll remind you…
Recommended.
Reading this book is a little bit like being stuck in a nightmare. One wrong turn, one deception, one mistake and then everything goes from bad to worse, and no matter how hard you try, you can’t escape. The main character is so compelling that I identified fully with her and battled with her through all her doubts and fears. What would you have done? What could you do? As always with a Nicci French novel, I couldn’t put it down. Compelling, gripping and very satisfying.
I liked the Klein series but felt that the last one was tired and let the original premise down.
HOWEVER!! This is AMAZING. From the start it will have you gripped. The characters are all very real and the story will have you breathless and wanting to read on but equally wanting to savour the joy of this utterly fantastic rollercoaster of a ride. I never do this but I’m going to re-read it again.
Definitely recommend. Definitely suggest you buy. Definitely give this 5 stars. It’s brilliant.
This is such a brilliant read and my first book by Nicci French and I most impressed by both the quality of the writing and the storyline. The tension began to mount almost immediately as the main character of Neve finds the dead body of her lover in his flat, desperate to try and extricate herself from any involvement Neve just bit by bit manages to dig herself deeper and deeper into a big hole whilst also suspecting everyone around her. This is a really riveting read and I particularly loved the character of DCI Hitching and the cat and mouse discourse that went on between him and Neve you could really feel the tension it was so well portrayed. I can totally recommend this for anyone who enjoys a cracking good mystery.
A fabulous read from start to finish it kept me guessing throughout and for me that’s all I want from a thriller.
My thanks to NetGalley and Simon and Schuster UK for giving me the chance to read the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
I thought this was brilliant, I really liked the writing and pace, and thought the characters were very realistic, and I was clueless as to who did what, can't ask for for more.I thought it was puzzling and read it really fast. Thanks for the ARC for and honest review.
Neve,a wonderful mother ,wife and a friend to all. Dark days loomed as the suspicions fell on her good long time friends and colleagues. A murder ,to Neve's lover and boss,Saul. .Who could have done such a thing? Suddenly Neve came under suspicion herself but ,even more frighteningly could she also be the next victim?
Wonderful book with twists and turns that gets you pondering ,just like Neve, who could have done such a thing and even more puzzling ,why?
Another great book by Nicci French .I have read quite a few of their books but this ,to me ranks among the best.
Loved every page .
