This was cute and it hit on the major points of Dolly's life, but part of what makes Dolly so awesome is her personality and her lyrics and quotations, and the magic of Dolly didn't really come through in the story for me. Still worth reading to kids though!

I absolutely love this series of books and as a huge Dolly Parton fan - this was was a real highlight!

I enjoy sharing these books with my class, they find them so inspiring, I can't wait to see who else they cover.

This is such a cool series. I love how each one has little factoids about the people being written about.

This one, on Dolly Parton has info I was unaware of, such as how she had a radio show before she went to Nashville.

<img src="https://g2comm.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/dolly-parton.png" alt="" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-5219" />

As always, these are excellent ways to introduce kids to famous people, as a stepping stone. And it is also cool that at the end of each picture book, it has a more detailed timeline with information about the person in each book.

Thanks to Netgallekyk for making this book available for an honest review.

Another one of "Little People, BIG DREAMS" book and what a treat it was! Beautifully illustrated, easy to read and a joy to behold - a printed hardback will make a great addition to the "Little People" library you might already have! A treat for a child (or an adult - especially a Dolly Parton fan!).

A side-thought: Dolly Parton would not be such an obvious choice for me if I had to pick a famous/outstanding person to write a book about. I would not necessarily buy her biography to a child.

Dolly Parton is a new biography for young readers in the Little People, Big Dreams series. I've reviewed a number of these titles and all of them are delightful and exuberant little books which cover the lives of famous cultural, science, arts, and innovative icons while maintaining an age-appropriate level of detail.

Due out 4th June 2019 from Quarto on their Frances Lincoln imprint, it'll be 32 pages and will be available in hardcover, and ebook formats.

Written by Isabel Sánchez Vegara it's well written in clear accessible language. The gentle and sweetly humorous illustrations were well done. The art by Daria Solak is appealing and colorful and supports the text very well. The illustrations are rich in small subtle details which bear a closer look (like the little butterflies which appear throughout the book). Dolly herself has this to say about her butterflies: “Butterflies are my symbol. As a child, I used to get lost chasing them and got my butt whipped for wandering too far off. So we have butterflies everywhere.”

Well written and appealing, I am really enjoying all of these little books. This one is a worthy addition.

Five stars. This would make a superlative reading circle book, classroom library book, or gift. Dolly is an intelligent and accomplished woman and this book is a nice tribute to an iconic entertainer.

This series is always a joy to read, it’s a really nice introduction to well known people for little children. Of course the plot is always a little bit fast but that’s to be expected and it’s totally understandable.
Dolly Parton is such a big party of country music and I was very glad to have the chance to learn more about this singer. For example I didn't know about her starting a library project for children or about the theme park. I think this is another great example of someone who followed her dreams and made it, while also doing a lot of good for others.

This was a good read but it was really sparse and it doesn't really talk about all Dolly has done. This felt thin and weak in comparison to the other books in this series. I loved the artwork and considered that the strong point of this book.

Such a wonderful series and Dolly well deserves he place among these formidable and successful women.
The stories are simple and give the basic facts that propel someone to success. Dolly came from a big family and never forgot her upbringing and core values.
Her musicianship was unparalleled and as a woman she had courage and business sense to go solo and forge herself a unique place in the hearts of country and musical fans.
In addition she has given so much back to the world beyond her singalong lyrics and catchy tunes.
This book gets you wanting more and rushing for more deeply researched biographies and Dolly’s own spin on her life.
A legend and a talent we should all appreciate.

As always, the 'Little People, Big Dreams' collection showcases the achievements of a famous face in an easy to access way for younger readers. It's great to see this book reinforce just how successful Dolly Parton has been, not just in the music industry, throughout her life.
The text is easy to follow for emergent readers and the illustrations are bright and engaging enough. Personally, these are not my favourite illustrations of the series. I found them too simplistic and lacking in character. When writing about somebody who loves wigs and makeup, the illustration should really emphasize this and sadly it didn't.
Another good book in the series.

At this point, I think if one of these books had amazing illustrations, it would look totally out of place in the series!

That aside, I quite enjoyed this biographical picture book about Dolly Parton. It talks about her career, starting as a child, and her move to Nashville, her solo career, and her business endeavours. I hadn't heard of the Imagination Library, so I was pleased to learn that little factoid in reading the book.

The illustrations are probably the weakest part of this one. They're very rough, streaky, and not all that engaging. The red spots on everyone's cheeks remind me of pepperoni slices! There's a little butterfly that appears on every page, and I assume it has some significance, but nothing is mentioned in the text.

This isn't the best book in the series that I've read so far, but it's one of the better ones, despite the lacklustre illustrations.

What a fun, informative book. I have followed Dolly since the 60s and figured I knew a lot about her. I was wrong.

This book begins with Dolly and her eleven siblings. It progresses throughout her life discussing her musical and business success.

I loved the writing and illustrations. It is written in a clear but informative manner. It is perfect for a young reader. Some of the words are difficult but with an adult, the child should be successful in pronouncing them.

The illustrations are colorful and fun. The accompanying pictures are made with markers and are realistic without being photographic. They appear to have been drawn by a child (this may not be true, but the concept is there). I just love the happy expressions and detailed backgrounds.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of Dolly, likes country music or want to just have a fun read.

This is a brilliant addition to the Big Dreams collection. It’s the perfect biography for anyone to be be inspired by. Not only does it give a strong message for young girls to dream big, but gives a strong idea of being true to one’s self when it comes to body image.

The Little People, Big Dreams series has become a favorite over the last year; I've enjoyed reading each title with my five-year-old daughter!

The spotlight in the latest release is on country music legend Dolly Parton. Young readers are given bold and bright illustrations with simple sentences to briefly share the highlights of Dolly's life, from her musical aspirations during childhood in a big family in the Smokies to her dreams coming true in Nashville; first with Porter Wagoner and then as a solo artist. After becoming a wildly successful country artist, Dolly set out on more adventures as a crossover musician and as a savvy businesswoman. She even started a special library for children across the U.S. and now several other countries also participate.

Another fantastic book in the series and a great introduction to Dolly Parton whose music and kindness are both legendary!

Thanks to Frances Lincoln Children's Books and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review. Little People, Big Dreams: Dolly Parton is now available at your favorite bookstore or library.

This book is a new entry in the wonderful Little People,Big Dreams series. It tells the story of Dolly Parton, a young girl who wanted to sing. Dolly grew up in a large family with ten sisters and brothers. An uncle helped her to get her start in music.

Young readers will learn about Dolly's passion for country music, her evolution to pop, her entrepreneurial spirit and her desire to give back. All in all, an inspiring story. The delightful illustrations add a spirit of happiness to the narrative.

As always, there is a timeline with photographs at the end of the book. There are additional facts about Ms. Parton there.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Quarto for this e galley in exchange for an honest review. I always look forward to new entries in this series. They make for inspirational reads and should be on school and library shelves.

Thank you #netgalley for giving me a copy of #DollyParton to review. I love these little biographies. Making information about inspirational people accessible to young children is always a plus. There are not too many books like this about Dolly Parton so this was a pleasant surprise. I enjoyed reading about her and my kids did too. The pictures were cute. A good addition to a biography section.

Another great addiction to this wonderful series.

I was not very familiar with the story of Dolly: for example I didn’t know she has multiple businesses, a radio station and that she sends books to children to all over the world.

Great illustrations and useful fact sheet with the key facts of the life of Dolly at the very back.
A great way to introduce famous and important people to the little ones.

Isabel Sanchez Vegara does it again, and this time with the support of illustrator, Daria Solak. One of the best series to come out of KidLit in the last few years is ‘Little People, BIG DREAMS.’ While most nonfiction books for children typically pick well know historical figures as their subjects, LPBD highlights Women, People of Color, Scientists, and Artists.

The newest title, and my very favorite so far, lets us discover and adore Dolly Parton. Even I, a long-time fan, learned a few things about her while reading, such as, her regular slot on a local radio station at the age of 10 or that her husband’s name is Carl. (How did I not already know that?)

This book truly shows its readers what an unstoppable force Dolly is. Her kindness shines through in everything she does, whether it’s the work she does for her own community, or providing books for children all over the world, or showing us all how to be happy with yourself, just as you are.

Dolly Parton is a true role model. So THANK YOU Isabel Sanchez Vegara, Daria Solak, & Frances Lincoln for telling the children her story.

Thank You to Quarto Publishing Group/Frances Lincoln Children's Books & NetGalley for the digital copy of this book to review.

I enjoy reading these Little people BIG DREAM books. They give just enough information about the person for a child to absorb / regurgitate. The illustrations that accompany these are soft, child-like drawings that go along with the "little people" aspect of this series.

I'm a huge fan of Dolly Parton and absolutely adored this book! It's fun, bright and really accessible to little ones. I've seen a few of the books in this series and they aim to teach children about iconic people. Dolly is a wonderful person who grew up 'poor as dirt' but worked hard to achieve what she has and now gives back to people in need. She's a fantastic role model and the perfect choice for this series. I'm definitely going to be buying this for some children I know!

A primer to all that is Dolly Parton, from her recording and private lives up to her entrepreneurial skills and outfits. This would certainly go down in America, where the lady is clearly more of a role model than, say, here in Britain. Here we consider her a success, but see one or two (well, let's be blunt – definitely two) things that kind of prevent us taking her seriously. As a result, and as a result of this book's brevity, it kind of reads like a hagiography; "unsurprisingly, she went on to become a superstar" – well, of course she did. I can't say I took to the artwork, either, which uses the colouring-in-with-felt-pen style as a virtue. But this series as a whole is fine, and shows that success can come about in any way, shape or fashion, from any source. This individual book didn't quite sell the virtues of its topic to me in a convincing fashion.

Dolly Parton is a musical superstar that even helps needy children gain access to books. This book series is great for educating children on many important figures in our world, with simplified biographical information and colorful illustrations.

First of all let me say that I love Dolly Parton personally and I am so excited to see that this series now includes a short biography on her amazing life. She is girl-power on steroids with the ability to inspire those around her. I love all her talents as a singer and songwriter and especially her ability as a savvy business woman.

Dolly grew up in the foothills of Tennessee's great Smokey Mountains, with her 11 siblings. Her family"was poor as dirt." They didn't have much but Dolly was gifted with the ability to sing and compose songs, accompanied by her guitar, at a very early age. She dreamed of "jumping onstage with high heels".

She was 10 years old when she started singing on a local radio and television station. After high school she set out to fulfill her dreams and headed for Nashville. She loved country music and that is the genre that made her a superstar. She is known worldwide for her musical prowess and being a very generous philanthropist. She has won many music awards, has sung with the most popular music artists, starred in motion pictures, and is founder of a special children's library, "Imagination Library" which sends books to kids in need all over the world. And if that is not enough, ( and it certainly wasn't for this visionary woman), she built a theme park and has become the most successful woman in show business. She has a wonderful sense of humour and loves lifting people up and encouraging them to celebrate themselves.

This condensed version of her life has fun, quirky illustrations and includes a biographical timeline with photos and facts about the entertainer's life. Dolly Parton is a true icon and positive role model for young kids everywhere. I highly, highly recommend the book.

This was such a cute and lovely little book. I loved learning more about Dolly Parton's life and I love that it included her charity that gives books to kids alongside her singer career. The pictures are adorable and the story great for both kids and adults alike.

I was happy to read this book as one of my daughters was born on Dolly's birthday and my youngest daughter has always loved her. Our three youngest kids have been lucky enough to be enrolled in Dolly's nonprofit "Imagination Library" that mails free books to kids every month until age 5, and I was happy to see that this program was included in the book. That said, they got the order of some things in her life wrong, like it said she founded this program (which she did in '95) and then "went on" to open her amusement park, which she founded long before that in '86. I also wish it had focused more on her activism and her fun personality. Lastly, while it says she liked to wear a lot of makeup, the illustrations don't really show any makeup on her other than blush. They also pretty much hide another aspect that Dolly is famous for, her famous (or infamous) cleavage, which seems a little rude. If it's a book about Dolly Parton, let her look like Dolly Parton.

My rating system:
1 = hated it
2 = it was okay
3 = liked it
4 = really liked it
5 = love it, plan to purchase, and/or would buy it again if it was lost

I read a temporary digital ARC of the book for the purpose of review.

Ah, yes, another inspirational book in the Little People, Big Dreams series, this time about country music star Dolly Parton. It touches on the major points of her life, includes empowering quotes and lyrics, and the ways in which she has given back to society. I feel strongly that children should learn about the importance of having dreams and striving to achieve in life and that is the message the book gives out. Adults will enjoy reading this alongside youngsters and learning together makes it all the more fun. What Sanchez Vegara has done is match the optimum amount of text for young readers with the quirky illustrations; you can tell everything has been thought through and that makes this a pleasure to read. Whether you appreciate the drawings or not is dependent on personal preference.

The easy to follow, accessible information throughout is simple to understand. I particularly liked that it promoted the idea of never forgetting where you came from — your roots and family — no matter how successful and wealthy you become. Dolly, knowing the importance of reading and education, started an incredible project known as the Imagination Library, a book gifting program that mails free, high-quality books to children from birth until they begin school, no matter their family’s income; I had no idea this existed but what a beautiful and thoughtful idea. This is the perfect introduction to the world of Dolly Parton and comes highly recommended. Many thanks to Quarto Publishing Group — Frances Lincoln Children's Books for an ARC.

I love this little series of books. This book focuses on Dolly Parton, an international superstar. Most children will not know who she is but with this book, they can learn why she is important and how she became a superstar. Dolly Parton is an inspiration not only as an artist but as a trailblazing woman. I love that she has been included in this series and that young readers will be introduced to this icon. I loved the information provided, from her entertainment career to her charity work, but compared to some of the other books in this series, the illustrations were not my favourite. Still a great read about an important woman.

Love the cute illustrations and the simplicity of this story. I love that the illustrations seems to be drawn by children.

This story hits on the highlights of Dolly's life from her humble beginning to her marriage to Carl to her breakthrough into country music and much more.

At the end of the book is shows an actual timeline of he life with actual photos from her life.

Dolly has done so much....she has an awesome attraction in Branson Missouri called the Dixie Stampede, it wasn't mentioned but it is a lot of fun and they serve excellent food during a great dinner show. This is one of the amusement theme productions that they are talking about in he book.

I really liked that this book included a timeline and actual photos of the Dolly Parton at the end; the drawing didn't catch her spirit at ll. THis gives you the basic information in a way that children can understand but it didn't give the whole story so parents might want to speak with their kids about poverty and how people overcome it as well as other aspects of Parton's life.

I've been following this series of biographies for a while and rarely does it take a misstep, so this was pretty much a guaranteed winner. Written by Vegara, and illustrated flamboyantly by Solak, this book takes a look at entertainer Dolly Parton's life. Parton has had 25 number ones on the Billboard Country Music chart, and just as many gold, platinum and multi-platinum awards, as well as a record number of top ten country albums.

She started out young and dirt poor, and her voice and talent carried her to stardom, which she did not let slip from her grasp, converting her fame into long-term business ideas that kept her comfortable (and more!) even when her popularity wasn't always what it had been. This book aimed at young children tells of her life in simple and straight-forward terms, always moving the story forwards. It's short and sweet and I commend it as a worthy read.

I love the books in this series and I couldn’t wait to read this one on the fabulous Dolly Parton!

I love that these books give an insight in to the back stories of some of the most influential people in the world. The Little People, Big Dreams series is one I always look out for.

I love Dolly and think that she is an incredible lady, I did know most of the things mentioned about her in the book, but for me it didn’t really show her full personality which is what makes Dolly Parton so remarkable and special.

I felt it was a little lacking compared to some of the others in the series and I didn’t think that the images really did Dolly justice, but it is still four stars from me for this one, I loved that is shared about her charity work and her “as poor as dirt” story; even with my slight niggles, I really enjoyed it, highly recommended!

This is a great biography of a great lady for the youngest readers. The illustrations capture the essence of the text with lots of color but not enough to distract from the story. The story captures many accomplishments in the singer's life while keeping it simple. There is not a lot of depth but that is to be expected for a the target audience. I could see this book being used with older readers to act as a presearch tool to give the student an idea about a person and different avenues that could be looked at with more depth.

Another excellent addition to the Little People, Big Dream series. Dolly Parton is a huge star not only for her music, charisma and the extravagances (like owning her own theme park) but also because of things like her charitable efforts in spreading literature and a love of books to children all over the world. If you are not already familiar with Dolly Parton's work in gifting books to children all over the world I strongly recommend looking into it.

This book itself is a nice short and oddly illustrated look at her life. A good introduction for young readers and possibly a useful way to introduce the concept of her 'Imagination Library' too.

I didn't know much about Dolly Parton's life and career, so I was delighted to pick up this book and learn about this talented singer. I learnt about her origins, the beginnings of her career, moving to Nashville , singing with Porter Wagoner and later going solo. I also enjoyed reading about her Imagination library for children in need. I think it is important to give children concrete examples of how celebrities and successful people can give back to society and help those less fortunate around them.

This is sweet biography of one of my most favorite people, Dolly Parton. The pictures are bright and cheerful, just like Dolly. I enjoyed searching for the butterfly on each page as well.

I just wish this series had been around when I was teaching. These beginning biographies of famous people have just enough information not to overwhelm young people, yet give a basic overview of their lives. This wonderful addition to the series features country music star, Dolly Parton. It touches on the major points of her life, how her dreams and the support of her family helped her launch her career, and adds what she did to give back. It also shows that making it big does not mean you should forget where you came from. I also like that it emphasized how she did not let people's opinions change what she enjoyed, such as wearing her wigs and makeup. Children are very important to Dolly Parton, so I think this book is an especially good fit for this series about following your dreams. One thing I did not know about Dolly, was that she started the Imagination Library, where children receive books in the mail from the time they are born until they begin school. Another way she shows how important children are as well as reading and education. These books have just a few sentences of text per page, complemented by quirky illustrations that will attract children to these books. I normally enjoy the illustrations, but I am a big Dolly Parton fan and this time, they did not appeal to me as much, but that is my personal preference. I can't praise this series enough. If you have the opportunity, check out this book, better yet, check out the series and recommend it to your local library or school library or buy them for the children in your life.

Another beautiful addition to this series which I love to read. Gorgeous illustrations accompany Dolly's story at the perfect level for readers of all ages. I loved the inclusion of her philanthropic activities relating to children and reading in this. I wonder if some children might even receive this book through that venture.

This wholesome story of Dolly Parton is beautiful. The story shows her life from her humble upbringing in a family of 12 siblings, to meeting the love of her life Carl, to becoming a world renowned singer. Learning about her love of literacy and how she would send books to children who couldn’t afford them makes me love her more.

I love the illustrations and how they are coloured. A little tougher with the marker lines, but beautiful none the less. It is a great style.

Thank you NetGalley for an ARC of this book.

Another fabulous edition of Little People, Big Dreams. I enjoyed the beautiful illustrations and short, but important information about Dolly Parton. I think it highlighted the wonderful person she is and the joy
she has.

One might wonder why Dolly Parton is part of this series of biographies for children. Why should kids know this 70+ country singer (and part-time actress, and business women)? Well, because although I personally know only two songs by her (actually it is 3 now - I just read that "Jolene" is originally by her as well), she released more than 80 albums throughout her career and holds several records in the music industry.

But most of all, because she initiated a library project for underpriviliged children so that they have the opportunity to get their little hands on books. For this alone she probably has earned her right to be included in this series.

Well-done concise biography with cute illustrations. The text could have been a bit more (it's only 1-2 sentences per double page). Nevertheless, the message for the children comes across very well here: hold on to your dreams, even if you are poor, or if people not always like how you look and dress up. Sometimes they do come true!

I love the current trend of picture book biographies and this is one of my favorites. The story is highly engaging and well-written. The illustration style matches both the book and Dolly Parton’s personality. A great addition to any library!

I know some of her songs (You Are, I will Always Love You, Jolene) but know nothing about her life. This simple biography book give me many new things about her. It is nice to find out how generous she is.

I think I am going to check another songs of hers since I am still not familiar with many of them

Another great title from the Little People Big Dreams series. Spanning the whole of Dolly Parton's life from her through her start in the music business and the development of her imagination library, her story is told in child-friendly language and with bright pictures. I would definitely consider using this book as part of music lessons or a display on inspirational women.

Well, I'm writing this review while listening to Dolly Parton. I knew her name, but not much about her. Again, another Little People, Big Dreams book that makes me want to find out more about the protagonist! I found this book a great way to introduce country music to my European children.
The story of a little girl who followed her dream, who found love on the way and worked continuously on becoming better, without forgetting to give back, what a story to share with my children!
I just became a Dolly Parton fan!
Thank you to Net Galley and Frances Lincoln Children's Books for providing me with an e-book copy in exchange for my honest review!

Dolly Parton is an often overlooked musical genius. College students are discovering her work now, and blasting Jolene through dormitory quads. I just saw an invitation to a Sweet 16 birthday, which included a viewing of 9 to 5.

This series is well written, and well illustrated. It belongs in the category of narrative biography, as it tells a story instead of reciting facts. This genre engages students, and are an important component of any biography research project.

The ‘My First Little People, Big Dreams’ series provides informative and inspirational biographies about people who left a mark on this earth, no matter what difficulties they have encountered.
These stories are very short, but that’s because they’re books for children, so it’s totally understandable.
I think they are a very smart and wonderful way to introduce little children to such important figures.
This one is about Dolly Parton, an American country singer. I didn't know much about her life and career, so I was glad to discover more. And I loved her library project for children in need.

Dolly Parton by Isabella Sanchez Vegara is part of the Little People, Big Dreams series that looks at famous people and how they made a difference in the world. We follow young Dolly who came from a big family. Her interest in music was cultivated early. She went on to become one of the most well-known country music singers, as well as a consummate businesswoman. Today, Dolly is known for her theme park of Dollywood, and for her charity work. The end of the book has a more detailed timeline of her life, written more for older readers. I read this with my cubs. We love this series! Highly recommended!
