Hmm… I don't mind the idea of a book that deliberately shows us the more visually (or olfactorily) peculiar nature of our planet, but I do think it might have been better than this. For one I would have preferred photos, however realistic and lifelike the artwork here actually is. For another I would certainly have ditched the blatantly unfunny "dialogue" the animals get given. And the opening salvo of ''ugly'' critters is a bit off, picking some perfectly reasonable beasties. Before the end however we do find enough trivia to mean the book is a bit of a success, from animals deliberately smelling as if they're dead and unsavoury to eat, to vomiting up food, cannibalism and defensive farts. But finally this is yet another book that misses the obviously essential bit of information – how and why such things developed. All it takes is a paragraph to introduce evolution, or is that still a no-no in too much of the American market? I enjoyed what I could, but this could have done with being more old-fashioned, letting the animals themselves make it a success.
A Giant Dose of Gross by author Andy Seed is a hugely loved book in our house! Our daughters absolutely loved it and it’s cool (but gross) facts about animals!
Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Definitely recommend to children!
This is the kind of book I would have enjoyed as a child. All kinds of unusual animals facts that you probably wouldn’t get from a typical animal book - like eating poop, shooting vomit, spraying stinky smells etc. Nonetheless, it is intriguing and interesting to learn these facts, plus the artwork is great too.
Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group for providing me with an ARC.
Andy Seed's books are firm favourites in our house. They are funny, full of fascinating facts and interesting to look through.
This book is keeping with my expectations from Andy Seed.
I warn you, it is gross, funny, factual and will have your children engrossed from beginning to end.
The chapter headings give you an indication of what to expect; Ugly, Unfussy, Stinky, plus more!
I love animals and felt like I knew a lot about them but I learned something new on each page and it will appeal to my animal loving children as well. It reveals some funny and gross facts that make each of the animals unique and it made me appreciate nature all the more for its diversity.
Great illustrations of each animal and proof at just how much research Andy Seed would have done.
Brilliant book and perfect for school libraries!
A book about animals that are gross !
Funny thematic on animals, rather interesting. Between animals that are ugly, those with strange habits or those who eat strange things.... It is a panel of animals that we are presented, more or less known, all with beautiful illustrations in watercolor.
A cool and original discovery! ^^
I received a copy of this book from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
I think kids will get a kick out of this charming, welll-illustrated book. I have my doubts as to whether these animals are "gross" but it's still a fun read.
What a great book! This book had your typical gross animals like skunks, vampire bats and rats; as well as animals I wouldn’t have thought of as “gross” such as beavers, white tailed deer and orcas.
Learning about the different types of gross animals was really cool. I think any kid (or adult) could learn a lot from this book, and get a good laugh or ewwww out of it.
The biggest takeaway is the worlds grossest animal. The human.
A very funny but yet informative book that little kids would love to read about. The artwork was very impressive.
My 8 year old loved this book! It is full of nasty facts about animals...what more could a young boy want haha.
My 7 year old daughter loves these gross animals! She enjoyed the fun illustrations and the fun explanations of each animal. It's a unique and interesting book. (She also doesn't think any of them are gross.)
I think my favorite thing about this book is that it included so many animals we don’t always think of as “gross” and showed that they have some pretty gross behaviors, too. It was just enough to show that gross is about perspective. This book would be great if you have a reluctant reader who would much rather be outside exploring...each blurb is short, but there is a decent amount of knowledge in them, the illustrations are eye catching. Definitely know we’ll be getting a few to give as gifts this holiday season.
This book was so funny and entertaining. I thought some of the pages were spot on.
Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to read this book.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. Thank you NetGalley!
My children and I both adored this book! It was a great mix of informational and easy to follow for the kids. The photos were great as well! And let's be honest.. what child doesn't love gross stuff?!
This really is exactly what it says! A giant dose of Gross.
who know birds didn't fart!
Filled to the seams with wonderfully amazingly disgusting facts , gross animal pictures and way more than the average person needs to know about animal vomit, poo and wee.
A totally wacky, weird, and wonderfully gross book.
Great realistic illustrations and topped off with quizzes.
I voluntarily read and reviewed this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This book is gross.
There were some pages I struggled to get through, because along with the gross descriptions there are corresponding gross pictures.
This would be a great book for a gross kid, who likes gross things
This is a really fun children's book about animals that is sure to appeal to kids who love gross things. It's absolutely packed with animals. I learned about quite a few new ones myself!
I find the use of the word "gross" a bit of a misnomer. Many of the animals in this book are more ugly or strange than truly gross. We also only get a sentence or two about the thing that makes each animal "gross". It's trivia more than real information. A decent choice to spark a child's interest.
Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – QEB for A Giant Dose of Gross – Discover the World’s Most Disgusting Animals! by Andy Seed, illustrated by Claire Almon. Animals are gross for different reasons, but most of that grossness is for a good reason. Some are ugly, such as the warty frogfish that has a lure attached to its head that is uses to attract food. Some are yucky such as geckos who don’t have eyelids so they must lick their eyes clean and regal horned lizards who can shoot blood from their eyes. I also learned that horses, rabbits, and rats cannot vomit, but dinosaurs could; wombats poop is cubed shaped; and birds don’t fart.
This book has lots of illustrations and facts which make it a very interesting read. Some of the illustrated animals have captions with funny or clever saying to add a bit of humor to the grossness. The book ends with two quizzes that you can use to test what you have learned and an index of all the animals discussed. This was a gross, but fun read. It was full of interesting facts and would be good for any animal lover or anyone who likes odd facts. I can think of several people who will be getting this book from me for Christmas!
I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. This was a great nonfiction book for little ones about the gross parts of nature and animals.
From birds to beasts, fish to frogs, A Giant Dose of Gross by Andy Seed explores the grosser aspects of the animal world. It does note that humans are the grossest animals of all >_< Stuffed full of amazing facts and awesome art, this is sure to delight any animal lover! I read this with my cubs and we enjoyed it so much we got a hardcopy. Haha, says a lot since our space for physical books is rather limited.
***Many thanks to the Netgalley & Quarto Publishing for providing an egalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.
