Rejection then acceptance and on to celebration.
Meet the ploofers. The ploofers have been practising something special which they all want to do at the exact same time. Will they be th next America’s Got Talent? When they do perform, one little ploofers does something different! When one little ploofer goes against the usual flow of things, the rest of them turn their backs on hiim. Just like in real life sadly. But wait a minute... someone recognizes the beauty in being different which sparks a change in attitude of everyone.
This is a happy little reading experience for both the adult and child, creating the opportunity to spark. meaningful discussions about people's differences and how we accept and value them.
I think the ploofers have more to say. Sequel please...
Where would we be without individuals and personalities? This is a fun, short and cutely-illustrated book for young children about the joy of being an individual.
Among the ploofs, Shoof is definitely an individual, but at first, Shoof is shunned. It's only when minds are opened and individuality is finally appreciated, that Shoof finds a place in this world. Whether Shoof's friend's talents will be appreciated is another matter! I commend this as a worthy read for young children.
The artwork is very simple, but it is cute. The concept is very simple, but it carries a big message. This is a very simple show of how differences are good and don’t have to be a bad thing just because it isn’t the same as everything/everyone else.
Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing fro providing me with an ARC.
This was a very simple book.
The color scheme was intentionally basic.
I read it with my four year old and he enjoyed it, and answered back when I said "isn't it awesome".
It wasn't as straight forward the teaching from this expect that some people like new things, different things.
It was a simple and enjoyable book and could be a good small paper back book.
The Ploofers are a family that do everything the same and together. When one little Ploofer deviates from the norm, the story takes off.
This is a sweet book for the youngest students in my Media Center. I know they will enjoy the illustrations which will be a good starting point to discuss the themes of acceptance and diversity.
This picture book would make a great addition to any library! It shows how it's Ok to be different. At first, one of the Poofers was being made fun of when he didn't POOF at the same time as others, but the others started to see him as different and beautiful! Many great lessons with this picture book!
A Little Bit Different is a very simple but sweet book about celebrating differences. This would be a great book for young toddlers and older preschoolers alike as the concept is illustrated in a very simplistic way but it can also serve as a conversation starter for older kids.
I received a copy from the publisher through Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.
What a cute story! This book is very short with great pictures. It tells the story of a little Ploof that is a little bit different. It shows acceptance of differences. It will be a great book to use with some of my students to help teach about differences, how sometimes people react, and how we can help show people that being different is not only OK but it is GREAT!

The message of this story is a good one, although I found the execution a bit too simple for my taste.
There are these little creatures called Ploofers who shoot grey smoke out of the tops of their heads. But one of them does something a little more colourful, and the rest of the Ploofers don't know what to make of it. In fact, they don't like it at all, because it's different. So the poor little Ploofer who's a bit different starts to feel bad... until someone else comes along and really likes that new creation.
Everything about this book is simple. The text is simple. The illustrations are simple. It works, but I kind of prefer a little more in the picture books I read.
I have to say, though, that the illustration on the copyright page is probably my favourite. It made me laugh out loud.
My favorite part of this book was the cute illustrations. The Ploofers are adorable and I loved all the colors that the "different" ploofer creates. I was a bit confused about the creature that befriends the lonely ploofer. Was it also a ploofer? To be honest, it looked like a piece of French Toast Crunch. I'm not sure why the author/illustrator decided to make this particular character unique when the rest were all very similar, including the main ploofer. That being said, it doesn't detract from the story at all.
The text is minimal, but the concept is a bit more sophisticated. I would say it is ideal for a storytime that caters to kids 4 years old and above.
I received an arc of this title from NetGalley for an honest review. This picture book for little kids is about being different and that it is okay to be different.
I was given this book for free from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
A Little Bit Different is a simple book with a very strong message. Great for little ones. The illustrations are charming and very unique. I would suggest this book for fans of Jon Klassen.
The bit of crude humor at the end didn't quite land with me, but won't offend fans of contemporary children's media (i.e. Trolls, Boss Baby, etc).
Definitely worth the look!
Simply adorable and sweet! Teaches children and reminds adults that being different is a good thing! Being different is a part of life and keeps everything interesting. This book needs to be added to my home library. Every child should feel comfortable with being different and embrace others who are as well.

This book was adorable. The pictures were so colorful and fun. There wasn't too much text, so it is a great read aloud for younger kids. It conveys a great message.
The ploofers are adorable, especially the one who is 'a little bit different'. And when his fellow ploofers realise he is not quite like them, their treatment of him changes and it's a bit sad! When a new ploofer comes along, will they all learn that to be unique is something special?
I loved the simplicity of this story that could be shared with young readers of any age. Teaching children the importance of expecting those who are different to them and giving lots of opportunities.
I will definitely consider using this in the classroom and I will look forward to their reaction to the copyright page!
Thank you to the publishers, the author and NetGalley for granting me access to an advanced digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
A Little Bit Different and the little plotters were just adorable. What a sweet story about being different, finding your group, inspiring others and just being you. It was inspirational and I immediately wanted to share it with my class.
This was such a joy to read with my five year old. He loved the illustrations, smiled a giggled at the silly names, but I could also tell that he truly understood the message behind the story. He related it to every day life at school by giving examples of kids in his developmental kindergarten class who are a little different and said (in his own five year old words) that they are already learning to celebrate their differences; that he enjoys having friends who are different because they are kind and fun. As parents, my husband and I insist on teaching our son kindness and acceptance and we love that there are books like this lovely little thing that help illustrate that in a way that small children can understand. I plan to purchase this book and possibly even give it as a gift to other children in our lives.
This is such a cute book about inclusion and a great tool to teach children about acceptance! I can't wait to tell everyone about this adorable book!
It’s a very simplistic story. It has a nice underlying message, but I felt the message could’ve gone deeper. Not a bad story, I just feel that it could’ve gone further and been more impactful. A brief picture story though that’s simple enough that small children should be able to understand it.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for allowing me to read this before its release date. My reviews are my own.
Love the simplicity of the message. Colorful and short, A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT reminds us that there is always someone who will like the ways we are different from everyone else, and that once we embrace what makes us different, those who thought “different”=“weird” may come back around.

I give this book five out of five birds. It is an adorable yet simple book that opens up a great discussion with young kids. It was short on words, but I think it hit the spot for the intended age. My two young daughters enjoyed talking about people’s differences and how we can support people in them. I love the art and the splashes of color throughout. It’s simple and should be read in schools!

A Little Bit Different looks like a gorgeous story and I like how one of the characters wants to be different to the rest but I am unable to see the words and so it would be unfair to review the book fully when I can only guess what's going on. I will be happy to rewrite the review to a longer and more detailed one if the book is fixed.
Very simple cute book about being different and how at first people don't like it or don't understand, but eventually they come around and understand it is special and amazing. Thank you for the opportunity to read and review this book.
This book is very simple. It doesn’t pick out race, religion or language. Just we can all be a little but different and that’s ok. Told in a very simple way that even the youngest child can understand. Lots of opportunities to talk to the child whilst reading. I want a ploofer.
It’s the sort of book that children would love to have a cuddly Ploofer to hold whilst reading this book at bedtime.
A really cute and quirky book with a heartwarming message. This would be a great book to read with young children but the message could be used to generate discussion with oder children.
This is a lovely and very simple children's book promoting the beauty of difference. The illustrations are sweet and simple and colorful at times. A great addition for little ones!
'A Little Bit Different' with words and pictures by Claire Alexander is an allegory about accepting those who are different.
The ploofers are creatures that look like balloons. They have been practicing something they all want to do together. When one of the ploofers does something different, no one knows how to react. That ploofer is left on the outside, until someone else comes along and encourages everyone to accept the difference.
This book works well for small children to help them understand that it's ok for others to be different, and it does it in, I think, a pretty accessible way. The illustrations are a bit simple, but they get the truth of the story across well.
I received a review copy of this ebook from Quarto Publishing Group - words & pictures, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this ebook.
Thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – words & pictures for A Little Bit Different by Claire Alexander. This is a story about Ploofers who always do the same thing until one little adventurous Ploofer tries something new… Really cute and fun read about being unique. Recommended for a quick read with a moral.
This book is adorable! Had me smiling (almost) all the way through! It's definitely 'different', I absolutely love the concept and the message this gives children about not being afraid to be different. Being different makes you special. The illustrations are oh so cute, love it.
Adorable. Great for teaching about how it’s cool to be different. Illustrations are lovely too. Can’t wait to share this with my class.
This children’s picture book is so very adorable. I’m not exactly sure what the purpose of the Ploofers are, but they’re easy to look at and enjoy, and I found the art style was so simplistic and wonderful.
At first, the Ploofers reject the colourful ploof that Shoof emits. But then one ploofer sees the colours and is amazed by it.
This story shows a very lovely way that different doesn’t have to be bad or ‘wrong’, but it can be different and still be enjoyable.
I think this will be a lovely picture book for young children to read and enjoy.
4/5 stars
This is an extremely simple story, almost wordless based on the few sentences and text on the pages. The Ploofs are round creatures, similar to a balloon with the air thing on the top. They all let out a ploof that looks like a black cloud. Then one of them starts to let off colours and they get upset because he is doing something different, so they snub him. When one ploof likes the colours they go back and confront the others and they all start letting off different colours. I am assuming the lesson is about accepting others who are different, but if they could all blow off colours, how was he/she really different. It seems to me that it is more about following what others are doing even when it is stifling who you are. Saying that, my grandchildren were not impressed with this book. I think in a classroom setting where the discussion is about not following others blindly and allowing yourself to show your talents, then it could be a useful book.
This is the story of a ploofer who is a little bit different to all the other ploofers. Ploofers (I love this word and I’m going to use it as many times as possible in this review!) look like… well, little grey blobs best described by the word “ploofer”! The ploofers are all lined up and practising a synchronised “ploof”. Except one little ploofer goes… shoof! When the other ploofers all turn their backs on him, will he be able to find anyone who will embrace his uniqueness and help the others see the beauty in accepting everyone for who they are?
This book starts with all the ploofers lined up, practising, all looking fairly similar. But then… SHOOF! I love how Claire has used colour to bring across the message of difference. There is something so magical about the simple and elegant way Claire has been able to portray such a complex and important issue.
Like its title, this picture book is a little bit different, but in a very good way! Claire is a wonderful picture book author and illustrator, but what I particularly love about this story, is that by using minimal words and repeated imagery in the illustrations, Claire has produced a poignant and powerful message of friendship, hope and acceptance, that will resonate with very young children. There are lots of lovely picture books out there on this important topic, but this one in particular can reach the younger end of the picture book market, which I think is wonderful. Ploofer, ploofer, ploofer!

This is a very cute picture book for children about how we are all different and that differences not only should be valued and understood but that we are all unique and individuals!
I adored this book. The illustrations are beautifully done and the book brings lots of opportunities for discussions with your child/or children.
