This book teaches how to create simple but accurate line drawings of a variety of animals. Text was only used when he needed to point out how he created a distinctive feature of the animal. Each lesson was basically 3 to 5 drawn steps showing how to create each animal, and the steps were clear and easy to follow. Common animals were often shown from different angles – like the side, front, and back – and in different poses. He covered around 150 animals, from cats and dogs to reptiles, rodents, rabbits, turtles, bugs, fish, and many more. His method basically uses simple lines to get the correct proportions in place and then he added distinctive details so that a person seeing the line drawing can tell which animal it is supposed to be. Overall, I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants to draw simple line drawings of animals, especially children and crafters.
This is an okay book with a huge selection of animals, insects, fish and other creatures to draw. Instructions are super simple, with little text. The animals are all drawn with that classic "make a triangle and then a circle here and then two parallel lines and then erase all this part and then add that" kind of style, instead of showing you how to just draw the basic shape of an animal. Some of the animals look really realistic while others just looked off to me.
I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for the purpose of review.
At first I honestly have to say I was initially pretty disappointed in this book but then I realized what makes it fantastic is the shear simplicity of it. There is little to no explanations just concise and detailed drawings that focus on the basics of 10 shapes to create a variety of animals with a touch of trivia mixed in. I feel this book easy enough for beginners but is perfect for all ages. I think this is a gem for those wanting to learn to draw animals and will greatly improve your technique. I received this book from NetGalley for an honest review.
The Draw Any Animal Book by Robert Lambry. Very clear and concise examples and instructions. Can finally draw at least a couple of pictures of animals. Will be able to draw more with some practice. A wide variety of examples.
Many Thanks to the publisher, author, and NetGalley for the opportunity to preview the book.
A great book with clear and simple instructions , great step by step illustrations and creates great results. I am a beginner so I can tell you it’s perfect for absolute beginners completely honestly. A lovely addition of facts about the animals this is a wonderful book for any age wanting to take their first step into art.

This is an excellent little book for learning how to draw animals in a simple way. Despite it being so simple the animals are realistic and a great starting point. There are several different compositions for each animal using variations of techniques but all easily done by a complete beginner. I like the way everything is done in pictures and there are very few words. It is a perfect book for all ages, and has certainly stood the test of time considering the author was born in 1902 and died in 1932.. This new version of his work allows for the reader to try out their own drawings within the book.
The subhead of the book is pretty much perfect description of it. I was expecting more doodle-style drawings, but I was surprised that the animals are drawn very realistically. The introduction shows simple shapes that are useful when drawing animals and then the book shows each animal step-by-step. Only few animals could have a few more steps because, for example the peacock is a step-by-step how to draw the body and the tail appears out of nowhere. But other than that, I have no other complains, the book is nice, and I think it would make a great gift for anyone who is starting to draw regardless of age. The trivia facts about some of the animals is a nice detail.
In "The Draw Any Animal Book", Robert Lambry shows how to turn 10 different shapes into over 150 different animals. There are step-by-step illustrations for each design, and practice pages to work on your skills.
This is a drawing guide book which breaks down the animal into basic shapes in 3 or 4 steps. It has a very comprehensive collection of animals, including some categories rarely found in art books. There are rodents, weasels, insects etc. in with the tigers, lions, and bears. On some of the complicated animals step 2 to step 3 is a huge leap and it is hard to see everything that was done. Even with that, great book. Thanks to the publisher and netgalley for letting me review a digital ARC.
In The Draw Any Animal Book by Robert Lambry readers learn how to turn shapes into realistic animals in just a few simple steps. The instructions are clear and concise and easy to follow along with. The book has a fun vintage feel.
The range of animals and the level of simplicity is a strength in this book. I also love the space to try it out yourself next to each animal entry. Another bonus point Is the great range of options for different birds to draw!
I will say, like many how to draw books, sometimes the images jump to a level of completion too fast from the previous version. It’s like the last step is frequently rushed and allllll these details get added on the last step. Kinda ruins the point of the step by step concept if you ask me... I see this a lot in these type of books though.
Cute, interactive, useful, and as I noted the great range of animals is cool!

What a delightful and educational book! I recall having these books in art class when I was little and obsessing over how to draw a dog. This book brings back all of that nostalgia with sophisticated drawings that challenge the artist to transform shapes into realistic cartoons. I absolutely adore it and can't wait to buy it for my nieces and nephews. (But lets be real, I'm the one who's going to use it the most for my bullet journal!).
The Draw Any Animal Book is a compilation of instructions for drawing animals that were written in the ‘20s and ‘30s for a children’s weekly newspaper. The drawings consist of simple shapes and lines that form into a variety of animals, such as dogs, rabbits, elephants and even insects.
The step-by-step illustrations are easy to follow, with many consisting of only a few steps. Since it is fairly simple, this is something many children and adults alike could master. I’m definitely not an artist, but I managed to complete several drawings and it was fun to try.
For someone who likes to doodle and draw, this might be the perfect book.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing a copy of this book for review.
Some books withstand the test of time and this is one of them! The Draw Any Animal Book is a compilation of step-by-step lessons written by a French artist in the 1920s and1930s for a weekly children’s paper.
This is a simple book chock full of different animals that you will be able to draw in no time. Seven basic shapes and the use of geometric lines figure in to each of the 150+ animals for which there are typically 3-6 steps illustrating how to draw it. In a few of the lessons, there seems to be a couple of steps missing, like with the peacock, but for the most part they appear to be complete. There are all sorts of animals included, such as many varieties of birds, big cats, ocean creatures, insects, and farm animals. There are also unusual animals that are not typically found in drawing books, such as quail, pheasant, raptor, peacock, hyena, antelope, and slugs.
What is really nice about these lessons is that the drawing steps are very clear and are the focus in the book. There is very little text to distract the budding artist — sometimes a drawing tip and at other times a brief bit of trivia. A very unusual and compelling feature of this book is that Lambry illustrates how-to-draw the same animal from several different poses - for example, a profile, from overhead, straight on and from behind. For example, dogs include 5 different poses and for ducks there are 7 different ones. Also, there are practice pages included for each animal.

What a delightful book! This book is by French artist Robert Lament featuring his step by step instructions and detailed but simple drawings of how to draw over 150 different animals from domestic to wild animals. I adore this book, and even though the sketches are from the 1920's and 1930's they are fantastic and Robert Lament's step by step tutorials really have survived the test of time.
This book would make an amazing gift to keep for any child over 8 and even adults.
Each page has a page next to it for you to try the same drawing shown, step by step.
A great resource for artists, whether experience or a beginner. There is plenty to learn from this book and I think it is also great for kids.
Such a cute book! I am excited to try to draw some of these animals! I like how there are different variations of each animal. It will allow people to develop different skills as well as learn how to draw one animal a few ways! There are a TON of animals and creatures in this book! This could be fun for a child, adult, or family!
I thought this would be a great little book on how to make items look realistic but the book was very basic in giving any details. (Continue rant on exactly how much of the book to give to what materials to use.) The end results were a little cartoonish and basic but I really enjoyed the little projects sprinkled throughout; they gave good inspiration for things to draw.
The drawings reminded me a little of Kath Kidston or maybe even basic children’s books style illustrations. I think this would be a fun book if you wanted to head into that area but not if you wanted your drawings to look life-like or realistic.
The book has examples for drawing tons of different animals, and the first few pages relate to techniques. I liked that opposite each page of instructions was a space for you to practice. Unfortunately, the instructions have very limited writing - they show step by step drawings but it's up to the reader to figure out how to get there. As someone with very limited drawing experience, I would have liked more explanation, and this is the reason for my rating.
I received an ebook ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Wonderful book. No words just step by step instructions and pages opposite to practice. This book would be good for young and old alike. The simplicity of this book is what makes it so great. No theory, no art school, just a visual way to learn how to make any animal. Well Done.
I would like to thank the publisher, author and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The Draw Any Animal Book is a book full of step by step tutorials for line drawing a number of animals. Originally published in a weekly children's newspaper in the 1920s-30s, this collection, released 15th Oct 2019 by Quarto on their Quarry imprint, is 176 pages and available in paperback format.
The format of these tutorials will be familiar to most readers. They start with simple shapes or geometric line drawings, add simple shapes and refine the outline to wind up with a recognizable finished drawing. Some of the drawings were whimsical, some were very stylized. Each tutorial page has a 'now you have a go' blank facing page for practice.
Great selection for a gift for a young artist, perhaps with some added sketch pads and pencils. This would also make a superlative classroom or library book.I would also recommend this book to babysitters, grandparents, parents, and basically anyone who spends a fair bit of time with small kids in order to up their 'draw with me' game.
Four stars. Fun collection.
The book’s description is a bit inaccurate. It won’t teach you to draw realistic animals, but if you are really struggling with the idea of how multiple shapes turn into a picture; this book would be helpful. Some of the drawings are a little more complicated, but this book is fun to look through, even if you don’t actually use it to draw anything. I found it to be a very beginner book for those who drawing does not come easily.
nice sketches of a variety of animals. Some it is just one sketch, other have a few. Great for those who want to start drawing animals. Good start.
I am not an artist, but I had great fun drawing some of the animals in this book. Each animal is broken down into a series of simple shapes - squares, triangles, rectangles - and each stage is clearly illustrated. Obviously practice makes perfect and the more you spend sketching the animals, the better the results, but I was really pleased with what I achieved and will refer back to this book frequently.
I would have to disagree with the description. This book will not give you "realistic" animals. It will however, take you to the next step beyond stick figures. This book would be a great one to use while you are learning form. It breaks the animal down into simple line drawings then provides a page for you to practice. Good beginner book. There is a great variety of different animals to choose from.
This book will be of some use if you really cannot draw. It offers a way of looking at the subject as a series of shapes which are the worked up into a rather ‘cartoon’ image of the animal. That’s because you are drawing what you think an animal looks like. This is something completely different from drawing a real life animal with all the subtle differences of colour and texture.
Draw Any Animal by Robert Lambry is what I think of as an old style 'learn to draw' book showing many animals from circle to finished product in a line drawing/cartoon style. Each animal is shown in a number of different poses and each page of examples has a matching page for the user to try their own hand at drawing. What I really liked in this book is that the finished animals were in fact do-able -- there was no big jump from mostly circle to drawing. Additionally the number of different poses was a big plus. On the downside, similar to other books of this type, there is no teaching on what to look for in trying to draw the animals in other poses. As I restart my creative endeavours, I think it will be worthwhile to spend some time trying the different animals.
This is an easy-to-follow book to draw cute animal pictures. It's the school of drawing that starts with simple shapes and gets more complex; a teacher or parent could easily adapt this to their little artists' skill and patience levels.
