Description
‘Father, I committed murder…I haven’t been to confession since then…God forgive me…she didn’t deserve that…’
Detective Superintendent Mark Pemberton is first on the scene of a deadly car accident and he overhears a deathbed confession that sends him reeling. With his last breath, James Browning admits to killing a woman — the problem for Pemberton? No murders have been reported.
But when a woman’s body is found in the woods a few days later, Pemberton gets more than he bargained for. The victim is missing her shoes — the strange calling card of a serial killer who has terrorised the country for a decade.
Has Pemberton inadvertently stumbled upon the mass murderer eluding the police? Or does he have another murder on his hands?
This chilling thriller is the third in Nicholas Rhea’s Mark Pemberton series.
Confession was first published in 1997.

Fascinating idea of a plot: a man is dying and with his dying breath, declares to be guilty of murder! The language and writing style reminds me of a good old copper story, more sophisticated and writerly. I found it difficult to place in a time frame because of that language, as well as the dna testing that was used within the book. I saw on the first cover page it is a reprint so that may make sense. A very interesting plot im sure you’re to enjoy!
A fast and exciting read!
"Confession" by Nicholas Rhea is a superb read.
Detective Supervisor Mark Pemberton is driving home from a lecture with Father Flynn and DC Lorraine Cashman. They notice a vintage red sports car speed past them on the road. The driver tries to brake before a sharp turn. Not enough, though. A horrible, tragic crash... The brakes failed? The priest and Pemberton go to the accident site and (with Louise's help) pull the driver out of his car. The driver stays alive long enough for the priest and Pemberton to hear that he wants to make a confession for a woman's murder.
The priest cannot testify to hearing the remark, however, Pemberton heard the words of the confession, also.
This leads the police force onto a cold case and a possible link to a serial murderer - the Sandal Strangler.
A wonderful, quick read! I read in one day. HIGHLY recommend for the intrigue and character depiction.
Many Thanks to Agora Books and NetGalley for a super read!
An excellent and solid mystery, engrossing and entertaining.
I loved the style of writing, the well thought cast of characters and the plot that kept me hooked.
The mystery is complex and well crafted, it kept me guessing till the end.
An excellent read, highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.
Book three of the Mark Pemberton cases. A roadside confession causes extreme consternation for Pemberton. Well plotted and carefully executed, believable characterisation and an all round engaging read.
I received this book from Netgalley for review and all thoughts and opinions are my own.
I also have a kindle copy received from Amazon.com for free.
DS Mark Pemberton is on a country drive home with his partner, DC Lorraine Cashmore and their passenger, the priest lecturer they just heard , when they are overtaken by a red MG motor. After the subsequent crash, a confession is overheard, thus beginning one of the most interesting cases of his career. Was this mild mannered young man really a serial killer of prostitutes? Or could they have it all wrong? The confession is the key.
A finely crafted police procedural with evidence clearly documented; this book is a masterpiece of the genre. This is my first Nicholas Rhea novel and won't be my last. I enjoyed the characters and the setting, the well written dialogue and rhythm of the case as it was outlined. Excellent!
