Description
‘Untamed will liberate women - emotionally, spiritually, and physically. It is phenomenal.’ (Elizabeth Gilbert, author of City of Girls and Eat Pray Love)
Who were you before the world told you who to be?
Part inspiration, part memoir, Untamed explores the joy and peace we discover when we stop striving to meet the expectations of the world, and instead dare to listen to and trust in the voice deep inside us. From the beloved New York Times bestselling author, speaker and activist Glennon Doyle.
*****
For many years, Glennon Doyle denied her discontent. Then, while speaking at a conference, she looked at a woman across the room and fell instantly in love. Three words flooded her mind: There. She. Is. At first, Glennon assumed these words came to her from on high but soon she realised they had come to her from within. This was the voice she had buried beneath decades of numbing addictions and social conditioning. Glennon decided to let go of the world’s expectations of her and reclaim her true untamed self.
Soulful and uproarious, forceful and tender, Untamed is both an intimate memoir and a galvanising wake-up call. It is the story of how one woman learned that a responsible mother is not one who slowly dies for her children, but one who shows them how to fully live. It is also the story of how each of us can begin to trust ourselves enough to set boundaries, make peace with our bodies, honour our anger and heartbreak, and unleash our truest, wildest instincts.
Untamed shows us how to be brave. And, as Glennon insists, 'The braver we are, the luckier we get.'

'This book will give you the courage to change your ways /quit your job / move away / cut *that* person out of your life or [insert any huge scary change]'
Emma Gannon, author of The Multi-Hyphen Method
'If you’ve ever said yes when your heart screamed no. If you’ve ever felt you were living in a box of someone else’s making. If you’ve ever wondered “what if...?”, Glennon Doyle’s Untamed will answer the questions you didn’t know you’d asked. I can’t stop thinking about it'

I really enjoyed this book. It’s very Brene Brown and Gabrielle Bernstein-esque. So if you’ve enjoyed this books, you should love this.
I address this to all the people pleasers out there! Cast off your shackles and liberate yourselves from perpetually doing what others desire you to do, usually with them as the primary beneficiary, and begin doing what YOU want and what feels right for you on a personal level; I know there are many people who struggle when it comes to saying no to other people even when their requests are cheeky, forward or take advantage of a persons good nature. It is high time you took back control and Glennon Doyle will help you on the road to achieving that objective by establishing tactics each one getting you a step closer to your goal(s) on the ladder of liberty. Untamed: Stop Pleasing, Start Living is a niche self-help guide for a very specific group of people. I found it to be accessible, inspiring and packed full of hints and tips to help you on your way to starting living your best life.
Books like this can often be dry and tedious making change all the more difficult but this is a completely different kettle of fish and was highly informative but in a way that allowed it to remain fascinating and eminently readable. I feel those looking to change this aspect of their life will have all the tools and motivation to do so after reading Untamed. So take the bull by the horns and start taking back your power from those around you and make the decision to live the rest of your life with YOU in the driving seat rather than being the passenger you have seemingly been up until now. Highly recommended. An empowering, fascinating and incredible work of non-fiction. Many thanks to Vermilion for an ARC.
I'd been excited to read this book since first hearing about it sometimes last year and it was just as wonderful as I hoped. Glennon Doyle is so gentle and kind and wise, while also being very funny. Untamed is inspiring and warm and made me cry on more than one occasion. I loved it.
I knew I was going to love this book as I love Glennon's writing so much - but I didn't expect to be so moved by it. Untamed is not just the story of Glennon - a renowned Christian speaker and activist about to go on tour with the book she'd just written about saving her marriage to her husband. It's an exploration of life and living, of relationships and how we navigate them. It's about love, and family. And most of all it's about self-discovery.
I loved the insight into Glennon and Abby's relationship, and really wanted to savour the book but couldn't put it down. It feels like one of those really good long chats that you have with a best friend, were you come up for air at the end feeling restored and rejuvenated.
Packed with lovely insights and full of wisdom, I want to buy a copy of this for every woman I know. Funny, smart, and fascinating - I loved it.
Thank you to NetGalley, who provided me with a free ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I chose this as it is a book picked by Reese Witherspoon's bookclub and its presence & stunning cover seemed to of created such a buzz so for a genre change I thought I would check it out.
Glennon Doyle talks honestly and openly about her split from her Husband to meeting her Wife and how that has impacted her whole life and that of her family. She analyses the profound changes it has also has made to her work & religion and reflects through her anecdotal stories of vulnerability how much she now see's differently and preaches it!.
I personally enjoyed the parenting issues the best handling racism, gender, emotions and the fight of maternal protectiveness v letting kids figure things out for themselves in time with space and how her Wife nudged her in to doing this. After all, how many parents often deal with an issue with their children then later reflect wondering if they should of handled it differently and how others would of done it. Well this showed her the other direction.
The part that lost me really was the religious and spiritual parts but that is only because it holds no interest to me so I felt myself skimming. I learnt a few things but nothing fundamentally that will change my life however I can see how different people reading this depending on their circumstance will have different views and relate to it and maybe find it empowering.
However, I think everyone will take something from this book in the end.
A memoir I would recommend.
My thanks go to the author, publisher and Netgalley in providing this arc in return for a honest review
A brilliant read from Glennon Doyle!
I couldn't put it down, it's an amazing memoir and one I'd recommend to others.
4.5 stars.
I’m a little late with this review, but I’ve needed some time to work through my thoughts. It boils down to this: Glennon Doyle has written a book that made me feel all the feelings.
I laughed: “ Hell hath no fury like a memoirist whose husband just fucked up her story“
I cried: “ I quit buying the idea that a successful marriage is one that lasts till death, even if one or both spouses are dying inside it.”
And I went to bed with a head full of thoughts on more than one occasion. Don’t rush this book; instead, sit with it. I found there was a lot to ponder. Although sometimes a little repetitive, it is bravely written, and doesn’t turn away from challenging conversations and looking inwards.
Thank you to the author, publisher @randomhouseuk and @NetGalley for the opportunity to review Untamed. It’s ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ from me.
I have eagerly awaited this book after reading Love Warrior. I love Glennon's ability to tell her story like it's an engrossing fictional novel. While the format of Untamed is different than her previous books, it perfectly suited the growth and evolution of Glennon. My favourite parts, where I connected and reflected most, were around parenting. I love Glennon's vulnerability, her realness and her ability to bring my to laughter and tears with her words.
I requested a copy of this on Netgalley after listening to Glennon Doyle's interview on the Happy Place podcast. Her outlook and empowering messages were inspiring. I haven't read any of her other books but I can see from reading this one that they were written in another lifetime for her. This book covers what has happened to her and her family recently, with snippets of anecdotes, insights and thoughts on being your true self in tricky and difficult situations including love, divorce, addiction, parenting, activism and faith.
There were a few moments early on when it felt like there were repetitions of the same angle or thoughts, which made me lose interest a little but thankfully this picked up and I felt I'd kind of made a friend by the end of the book. Because that's the joy of Glennon's writing, it is chatty and friendly, but with real heart and soul; she's not afraid to make bold statements but she is keen to detail that this is about her, her feelings and perspective, you're free to disagree without judgement. It is more a guidebook to finding your own "cheetah" and realising what cages YOU.
I adore Glennon Doyle and her beautiful heart. I don’t think I’ve ever highlighted as many passages in any other book I’ve ever read. This book is medicine.
Part memoir, part self help book, this is a beautifully written book that will take its reader on a journey. I loved reading about Glennon and her wife Abby, their story is what really made this book for me, more so than the self help aspect. A good read that offers some great insights.
The structure of this book, with all it’s wisdom and powerful quotes, is the perfect way to digest it. I like that each chapter stands alone as it’s own short story whilst the whole book comes together to give us a wider insight into Glennon’s life. Someone the other day wrote ‘If I took a highlighter to this book, it would glow’ and that’s exactly how I feel about Untamed.
It is such an inspiring book for feminists, and those trying to actively release themselves from their case of misogyny (amongst many other cages). Glennon’s own personal story makes this book stand out, as it is such a strong reminder we can do whatever we want for ourselves if we let go of other people’s expectations and society’s standards. I surprisingly (as a non-parent) enjoyed the parenting aspects of this book and exploring how we consistently teach women to be feminists but we don’t put the same onus onto men. The relationship between Glennon, Abby and the rest of their family is an inspiring and lovely one to be able to read about.
There’s a lot of ‘food for thought’ in Untamed and I know for sure I’ll be re-reading a lot of the chapters that are poignant to me..
This is one of those memoirs/manuals/guides to life that I want to give to every single one of my girlfriends. When you're at the wobbly age of mid 40s and have lived long enough to know you 'coulda, shoulda, woulda' Glennon's words give you permission (and offer guidance) to living the life you want to live. On the one hand it is a raw honest emotional journey to living her truest life while keeping her relationship with her kids and ex intact. On the other hand the wisdom and words of encouragement to women unsure about leading their very best lives leaps off the page. I didn't know this author until a friend mentioned her to me. I'm not a mother so her inspo words in previous books would have passed me by. Untamed speaks to and for every woman. It is best summed up for me in the line: "What the world needs is more women who have quit fearing themselves and start trusting themselves." WORD. Thank You Glennon.
