Description
Milton the washing machine and W. P. (Whirlpool) the dryer are being delivered to a new home in Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia. The pair are excited to start their new jobs in the Crosby home, and are just getting settled in to the basement when "the kid" comes home from school. Sidney straps on a pair of Rollerblades, drags out a beat-up hockey net, and starts to practice. Every now and then a loud carrong echoes off W. P.'s shiny white enamel as the puck misses the net, prompting scolds from Sidney's mother upstairs.
Eventually, the poor dryer needs to be replaced; it's missing knobs and covered in dents. W. P. doesn't want to go, and it's up to Sidney to convince his dad that sometimes, being reminded of your mistakes is a good thing.
An imaginative interpretation of the history of Sidney Crosby's famous dryer (now a popular attraction at the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame), paired with vibrant artwork from award-winning illustrator Brenda Jones, Sid the Kid and the Dryer will have young readers and sports fans cheering from the sidelines.

'Sid the Kid and the Dryer' by Lesley Choyce with illustrations by Brenda Jones is the story of a very famous hockey player and the poor dryer he practiced near.
The story is told from the perspective of a new dryer arriving at a home and being installed in a basement. The dryer soon meets young Sid who sets up a goal in the basement and practices endlessly. That kid grew up to be Sidney Crosby.
This was a really cute story with a really great lesson. I learned that if you want to see the actual dryer, it's in a museum in Nova Scotia. The illustrations are fun too. I love the dented face of the dryer with a missing button that looks like a missing tooth.

Sid the Kid and the Dryer is a fun book about one of hockey's GOAT (greatest of all time) players!
5 hockey sticks out of five!
As huge Crosby and Pittsburgh Penguins fan, my 10 year old daughter and I loved this charming story of Sid and his infamous Dryer, Coach WP! My daughter felt that this book is especially important for kids right now due to Covid-19. Like her, there are many kids who miss hockey and may be feeling defeated after their seasons and the NHL coming to an abrupt halt in March 2020. She felt the biggest take away's are to never give up, keep practicing with what you have and to always believe in yourself! hockey will resume and the kids will be ready! As a hockey mom, I appreciated the story reflecting on some of Crosby's struggles to stay motivated and the overall message of perseverance, patience and practice! A great book about one of the greatest in the game! Bar down!
