Description
In Hungry Animals, children are presented with a series of bright and funny wild animals, each with their mouth wide open (a v-fold pop-up), eagerly awaiting a tasty treat.
The child can choose a 'dangly' food item (hanging from the spine of the book) to feed to each animal. The hungry giraffe might want to munch on a crisp, green leaf but wouldn't it be funny to give her monkey's tasty banana instead? What would monkey say about that?
This delightful series of pre-school books encourages young children to engage with the book and converse with the parent or carer, form connections between the animal characters and what they like to eat, and to practice hand-eye coordination through play.
They can choose to either pick the correct food to give each animal or can engage in ‘silly play’ by offering knowingly inappropriate foods to each character.

This is an adorable book about feeding animals. I would love to own a physical copy of this one since it’s a pop-up book with attached foods to feed the animals! Perfect book to get motor skills going as well as learning what animals eat what.
I read this with my 4 year old and she loved it! Found it to be very short but still fun to read! She liked coming up with multiple ideas on what the animals could eat and loved the colorful pictures. When we finished she wanted to read it again and again. I love the idea that the physical copy with have pop up portions to each animal making it interactive!
A baby picture book with Hungry animals. Their tummies are rumbling and your baby will love the big faces of each hungry animal. A great way for parents to connect to their babies in reading.
A Special Thank you to Quarto Publishing and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.
What a great little book to share with your little ones-
I shared this with my 3year old grandson who’s Way to busy to read- the book ideally needs to be hard copy as the animals open their mouths to be fed.
Wonderful illustrations.
And yes, he sat down to read it with me with great laughter!
Banana! is a cute book aimed at toddlers. I like the bright and eye catching illustrations, which toddlers would love. Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to review this book.
This was a beautiful book which I think will be perfect for babies/young toddlers although it was hard to appreciate this as the digital version obviously cannot show the interactive elements.
My son enjoyed the pictures and I liked that the story encouraged him to communicate and made him think instead of just me telling him the story and i would be interested in seeing more from this range.
Bone! and Banana! by Carly Madden are interactive board books for babies and toddlers. I read a digital copy of these books, so my review is based on what I am imagining the board book to be like. These books have pop-out pages and dangling food to put into the animals' mouths.
In Banana!, there are four animals outside: a crocodile, bird, giraffe, and monkey. First, the bird asks for some food. In the board book, the beak would pop-out, so the child could feed him. After the bird, the giraffe, monkey, and crocodile need to be fed. The last page of the book shows all the animals happily eating their food. I love the illustrations in this book, and I'm positive that a small child will love it too.
I think babies and toddlers will love interacting with both Bone! and Banana! I read these to my 14-month-old son, and he kept pointing at the different animals. I really enjoyed the writing in these books and thought it was clever that the author included the animal sounds when asking for food. I recommend adding these books to your little one's collection, and I can't wait to buy the board books.
Just like the "Bone" version which is very similar to this book, I know my son will love the physical version of this book! So interactive, bright, and interesting!
I viewed this book as a digital copy so I cannot speak to the quality of pop ups and or the dangly snacks. This is a cute book. I think it would be great for younger children to interact and it would be great to start the idea of animal care. It is a fun book to make sounds and foster creativity with childre. The pictures are beautiful and of good quality. It is a basic book.
I was sent an e-book copy of Banana! by NetGalley. In Banana! there are four hungry animals waiting to be fed. I understand that in the physical book children will be able to feed each animal a dangly food item into a pop-up mouth. I know any young child (4 or under) will love this concept and enjoy physically choosing food for the animals. The illustrations are bright and vibrant which will also capture the child’s imagination. I just hope that the pop-ups and dangling food items in the physical hard copy have been designed to be robust as possible for continued use as young children will love playing with this book and I think it would make a great present.
Very cute illustrations and a great, easy read for young ones. The story is simple so I imagine toddlers will age out of it quickly but it would be great for first books and young toddlers.
A cute and colorful book for very young children! It is a lift-the-flap book so toddlers will enjoy interacting with the book. The vibrant pictures of animals and their food will help children learn the names of animals and what they eat.
Thank you NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group for providing this ARC.
This is a very simple book about feeding animals. Bright and colourful illustrations of each animal are accompanied by a variety of eating noises. The noises are excellent for reading to young children - I'd say anything from newborn up would find this engaging, but it was also perfect for my three year old. Perhaps by four or five at the oldest they'll have outgrown it.
I reviewed a digital copy which doesn't quite have the features of the physical copy, as this is a pop-up book with dangles that you can actually feed to the animals. That way the children can choose which animal eats what. As a digital book, we read it at my computer on a large monitor and I gave my son the options, he still enjoyed yelling at what different things the animals like to eat so I'd say it's very interactive and early-educational. Considering how much my three year old enjoyed reading the digital copy, I'll be adding the physical copy to his Christmas list.
The only downside is it is quite short with just four animals, I'd love to see this expanded a bit more as I think there's scope for a few more food choices without overwhelming young children.
I enjoyed this short children story and the illustrations to. The story had you and your child guessing what might the safari animals like eat for lunch because they are hungry. My daughter like all the different animals.
I received a complimentary copy via Netgalley. This is honest unbiased opinion.
A nicely illustrated young child book.
I was sent a digital copy of this book so cannot comment on the interactive element of this book.
The illustrations are lovely but it is quite short and quite simple so children will probably grow out of it quite quickly.
My son (16months) loved the pictures and would be perfect for him as a board book.
What a cute book! I think this book is perfect for toddlers! This book will be a great gift for people with small children!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced digital copy of this book!
What's not to love about this charmingly engaging board book that can't fail to appeal to children as young as one up to four year-old preschoolers. It's clever and fun, and takes interactive to a whole new level. It's not just a book — it's a game!
The concept is simple but effective. Choose the right (or wrong, if you want to be silly!) snack for each of the four animals: a bird, a giraffe, a monkey and a crocodile, and put it into its (pop-up) mouth. The different snacks — worm, leaf, banana, fish — are dangling from cords attached to the spine of the book. What a seriously genius idea!
Little ones will adore the bright, colorful illustrations, which all have interesting little details to grab their attention and spark questions and discussions.
I especially love the educational aspects of this book. It's great for promoting hand-eye coordination, discovering new vocabulary, and encouraging imaginative play. I look forward to purchasing a hard copy once it is published to read with my little grandsons.
Both my daughter and I really enjoyed reading this cute book before bed, and it will be even better with the pop-ups in the physical copy. We enjoyed naming the cute illustrated animals.
This delightful interactive board book will become your little one's favourite for sure. The illustrations are cartoonish, colourful, vibrant and full of expression and action, hitting all the elements that small kids love.
Safari animals ( bird, giraffe, monkey and crocodile ) pop up in a v-fold with their mouths open eagerly waiting an appropriate snack. The reader must choose a food item (they are creatively dangling from the spine ) to feed the hungry critter. Kids problem solve as they choose the perfect tidbit for each animal to enjoy.
The author has not only created a book but a game! Brilliant! The book will spark conversations, promote hand-eye coordination, deliver new vocabulary and encourage imaginations to bloom. This would be a wonderful gift to give for a birthday or any other special occasion. I highly recommend the book.
Adorable book. Showed the children I work with (age 2-4) and they loved the idea. Definitetly one we would consider getting for our preschool library .
Oh My Gosh! This book is so cute. It is perfect for the little one in your life. My grandson and I read the ebook together, therefore we did not have the benefit of the “dangly food items” that the book description talks about. However, we had so much fun guessing what we thought the animals might eat. My grandson loved the use of onomatopoeia in the book and I enjoyed the colorful illustrations. At the end of the book we had a wonderful discussion about what we guessed the animals would eat and what the illustrations had created. All said and done, Little guy and I had a wonderful reading experience together. I definitely will keep this book in mind as I purchase books for friends and family.
I requested and received an e-ARC of this book from Carly Madden and Quatro Publishing Group through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
This was a cute book; I like that it has food items hanging from the book to feed to the animals and that there are pictures on the back to show what the animals normally eat. I also like that children will be able to choose whatever food item they want to feed to each animal. Each time you read this book it could be different, you could be silly and feed every animal the same food, or all the wrong food, or you could be serious and feed them the appropriate food. Just a fun book.
This review is identical to Bone! as both books have dangly food items and animals to read, and both were just fun books.
