Ruth Ware meets Agatha Christie.
A murder is done in the park surrounding Normanby Hall. Paige comes there on call and notices Rav Singh and DI Forest. They tell her that there came a deaf group from Lincoln School. The head teacher, a support assistant as well as a social worker came with some students. The head teacher, Steve Wilkinson, and a child , Leon who's fifteen are missing. Later the head teacher is found murdered.
Liz Marcek, the deputy head, Sasha Thomas, a social worker and Mike Lowther.
Saul Achembe, the school’s IT teacher. Jessica Farriday
In students there are Cassie, Samira, Kian, Courtney and Bradley.
One of them is a killer.
But who?
And then a second body is found.
Rav and Forest have to catch the killer before they strokes again.
I loved Pattison's first novel, The Silent House so I was reading this with much expectations. I must say that it was really good but wasn't as sinister as the first one.
I loved the characters of Cassie, Paige, Max, Mike, Steve. Others were good except Jessica, for me she was ok ok.
Story is told from two POV's, one of Paige and another untitled one. Both versions were good.
Thanks to NetGalley and Avon for giving me an advance copy of this awesome psychological thriller.
Five teenagers from a school for the deaf go on a camping trip in the woods in winter, but one in the morning, one of them is missing and their teacher is dead. Paige Northwood is an interpreter for the deaf and is brought in to translate for the students to try to find out what happened. It turns out that their are plenty of people with motives for murder and Paige is worried that time may be running out for the missing student.
I received an advanced readers copy in exchange for an honest review
Very well crafted police procedural- with an engaging look inside the Deaf community. I always like it when I learn something new from my pleasure reading. Would love to see more from this author.
This book has strong Picnic at hanging rock vibes. An overnight trip for a group of deaf teenagers. 4 wake up and one disappears. Something sinister is clearly afoot....I highly recommend this engrossing thriller.
Wow, the author did it again, another amazing novel based on Paige Northwood, a sign language interpreter. Her first book, The Silent House was intriguing and taught me a lot that I didn't know about the life of a deaf person.
Silent Night is just as intriguing with lots of suspense. When a teenager goes missing on an outing from the School for the deaf, Paige is called in to translate for the police. She is inquisitive and can"t stop herself from investigating on her own. Her sister attended the same school so Anna is a great source of information for Paige, plus she knows the past Head of the school. We are introduced to characters that were mentioned in passing in the first book that help to explain Paige's personality and actions. The characters in this book are nicely developed with just enough left off of the description to keep you wondering about things they say and do.
There are a lot of situations in the book that left me feeling really creeped out and glad I wasn't reading this book while alone. The author does a wonderful job of creating characters and locations that keep you on edge. A great "whodunnit" that will keep you guessing until the very end. A true psychological thriller. You can read this book without reading the first one but you will be missing out on a great book if you don't read The Silent House also.
Thank you to NetGallery and Avon Books for the opportunity to read the ARC of this wonderful book.
I loved this book. Nell’s first book was great. I can see that she is going to grow with each one. I found it very interesting that it was set in the deaf Community. It was full of mystery and twists around every corner. Nell Pattison is quickly becoming one of my favourite authors.
Winter trip in the country for deaf students ends with missing student. Teacher who had tried to find him is dead. Sign language interpreter Paige Northwood helps the police and becomes really involved in the case. Many motives and alibis, so who is the murderer?
Perfect thriller for snowy winter evenings.
A very well written follow up to the first book. With a limited number of suspects, it has a Christie like atmosphere. There were more pages devoted to Paige's back story but no conclusion maybe in future books.A good book. Recommended for its different background.
Thank You NetGalley/Publisher & Author for this gifted e-ARC!

Review---
This was such a fast thriller that had me hooked from get-go!
I stayed up all night to finish this book. And let me say it was worth that sleepless night!
The writing in this book was beyond fabulous.
This was a hell of a thriller, I promise you wont regret reading this.
I was so happy when NetGalley approved me for this read! Because I'v been dying to get my hands on this one and I can't thank y'all enough!
Rating--- 4/5
Firstly I will say I found some bits hard to follow and get my head around but I did thoroughly enjoy this book. I love a good mystery and this certainly keeps your attention.
The story begins when five deaf students go for an overnight trip to the snowy woods. They all go to sleep but in the morning one bed is cold and empty. A 15 years old Leon is missing and his teacher's body is found in the woods along with the weapon used for the murder.
Snowy woods are perfect scenery for a thriller. Continuous snowfall makes it harder to conduct a search for the missing boy.
The police reach out for help to Paige Northwood, sign language interpreter. She get's involved in the investigation, determined to find vulnerable teenager. A then the killer strikes again.
Wow! I can't fault Nell's book. It's gripping and blood chilling right from the start. Many books have a really slow start. ''Silent Night'' keeps you on your toes right from the beginning. So many twists and turns it makes you dizzy. I absolutely loved it. I'm usually quite good with guessing the ending but I was really surprised. Even though I had few suspects on my list I was constantly changing my mind.
I haven't read such a disquieting story in a long, long time. It made me bit my nails way to short ( bad habit of mine). I can't praise “Silent Night” enough! I'm definitely going to check out “The Silent House” which is the first book featuring the interpreter, Paige Northwood.
Paige Northwood has been called in to assist the police again when the headteacher of the local school for deaf children has been murdered on a school trip. One of the pupils has gone missing and would seem to be the culprit.
When the case opens up old wounds for Paige she is going to need personal support to be able to cope with the pressures.
This was a brilliant follow up to The Silent House and I have enjoyed the character development throughout. Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for this arc in exchange for my honest review.
The twists kept my attention, though I found some of it a bit confusing to follow at times with all the various set-ups and lies.
Kindly received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
The second book in the Paige Northwood series, Silent Night is a chilling mystery which begins when students at a school for the deaf go on an overnight trip to the snowy woods with their teachers. By the time morning comes a teacher’s body is found in the woods and a student is missing. As police begin their investigation, sign language interpreter Paige Northwood is called in to assist them with their interrogations. But the case opens up old wounds for Paige while police race to discover just who the killer is - before they strike again.
Written by Nell Pattison, Silent Night is the second in the Paige Northwood series. Though you don't need to have read The Silent House to understand Silent Night, it is obviously recommended, and you're sure to want to go back and read it if you haven't already. What’s so great about The Paige Northwood series is that it gives a voice to the deaf community. Thanks to Pattison’s own experiences, readers are able to learn in addition to being thoroughly entertained.
Like the first book, Silent Night has all of the key features of a great thriller - it's unnerving and full of suspense with twists and turns throughout. From the very first page you’re sure to be gripped and won’t want to put the book down. There are moments and situations which genuinely put the reader on edge and it’s certainly recommended to read it with the lights on!
Despite the book featuring a lot of characters, they’re all well-round and developed, and as a consequence there are plenty of potential suspects, all with their own motives to kill, ensuring that this is a clever whodunnit. Meanwhile Paige herself is likeable but also has her flaws, resulting in a relatable and human main character, who’s easy to champion.
A compelling and fast-paced read, Silent Night is a unique and chilling thriller and impossible to put down.
A group of teenagers from the school for deaf children goes on an overnight trip into the snowy woods, but when they wake up the next morning, one of the children is missing, and their teacher is found dead.
Did the missing teenager kill his teacher, or is he on the run from the real killer?
I loved the first book in the series, and since I found out about this one, I couldn't wait for it to be available to request on NetGalley.
I'm happy to say that it didn't disappoint me. However, it was one of those books that have me on the fence about the rating.
Firstly, I found it a bit slow to get going, but it turned out to be the kind of book that sucks you in invisibly. Towards the end, I was racing through it to find out who the killer was and even though at some point I guessed correctly, I was still in for a surprise about the motive.
Secondly, I found Paige irritating a few times, especially whenever she learnt things and deemed them to be unrelated to the investigation and therefore decided not to report them.
However, it was a unique, well-plotted book, full of twists and turns. I can't wait for the next one and I'm dying to see who Paige chooses.
Silent Night is the first book by Nell Pattison even though this is the 2nd book in the series. The main character is Paige Northwood, an interpreter for the deaf and brought in to translate during a murder investigation. Five teens from a school for the deaf go on an overnight camping trip in the woods. The next morning, one of the teens is missing, and the police also find a teacher dead.
Silent Night is a good police procedural. I liked the characters and their personalities. In addition to interpreting, Paige is also dealing with her ex-boyfriend, who is not a very nice person. It brings an added story element. The addition of the deaf community and using the BSL was interesting. The book was engaging and had a gripping mystery that had me guessing until the end.
I look forward to another book in this series by Nell Pattison.
#SilentNight #NetGalley
This is an incredible book. A fast-paced, gripping thriller that isn’t predictable in any way. There are plenty of twists along the way, which keep the reader enthralled to the very end.
This is the first book I read of the series as hadn’t had a chance to the the first instalment and it didn’t disappoint. I loved it was about a group of students whom are deaf and have gone away! I liked all the nods and ticks to BSL too. The mystery is surrounding the teacher whom has been murdered.
Overall a good read .
This was good! I had no clue who the killer was! I thought I knew a few times but boy was I wrong!! Did i mention this was a good book?
This second book in the series definitely improves on the first and makes me glad I gave this author another try. With the backstory (in part) our of the way, this one reads a much more solid murder mystery. The solution to the case isn't as obvious, the character development is much improved and the framework for additional books is well established. I still don't like the main character, for all the artful handling of the Own Voices/Deaf Community aspects, Paige is an unremarkable archetype of “pretty woman with a secretive past.” That said, the series as a whole is developing into a promising “gritty-cozy” series. If you are looking for a series with an interesting, and well researched, premise that is slightly darker than the standard cozy, this is a great pick.
I loved Nell Pattinsons book Silent House so i was so thrilled to read this! There is such a great tone to these books, it makes you reassured that you’re reading pattinsons books, that the atmosphere created is so tense and immersive that you dont want to stop reading. I loved this book for this reason, the feeling and atmosphere it creates.
Well she has done it again. I wasn’t expecting much because the first book was so good and boy I was proven wrong. I’m just so bloody glad I didn’t read this on my own. It will keep you guessing until the very end.
Another brilliant read from the author Nell, if you haven't read The Silent House you really should it is really good. This story centres around a school for the deaf, when a student goes missing and a teacher ends up dead, who was it? I love the way Nell brings the story to life, you can't just stop at one chapter, each chapter makes you want to read on to find out more, you suspect one person but is it really them? all the students are acting suspicious but do they really know what is going on? There are lots of questions I tried to answer and everyone made me highly suspicious that it was them but I didn't know what the outcome would be at all. I like how Paige's story is woven between the story, and the fact is apart from Nell's previous novel I have never read a book about deaf people, I think this should change. I look forward to the next book.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it wasnt until the end that I realised this is the 2nd book in a series by Nell Pattison. The book was a crime storyline with lots of twists and turns which made the whole book very gripping. The book was great at providing a basic education on the Deaf community such as how deaf individuals communicate to one another and to hearing individuals. Having previously done some work experience at a Deaf school, I found the book very touching. I loved the way it was written and how it easily distinguished between sign language and spoken language. I would thoroughly recommend to anyone and will certainly be going back and reading the first Paige Northwood mystery The Silent House. Thanks NetGalley for allowing me to review this book prior to publication!
This was an incredible book that was fast paced and gripping. I loved the premise and the chapters were the perfect length.
Thank you to the publisher for providing me with a copy of this E-book to review via Netgalley.
This is the second book in a series featuring Paige Northwood a British Sign Language interpreter who freelances for the Humberside Police when needed. Some students and staff from Lincoln School for the Deaf are on a weekend away staying in cabins in the grounds of Normanby Hall. It’s snowing quite heavily which leads to great concern when staff realise that fifteen year old student Leon is missing. Head Teacher Steve Wilkinson sets off in search of him and when neither return the police and Paige are sent for. Later Steve is found dead and Leon is still missing. As in the previous book this features DC now DS Rav Singh and his volatile boss DI Forest. The story is told in the present and backtracks to several students at the school before and during the trip.
This is a good series which features the deaf community at the heart of a crime mystery which I think makes an important statement. Members of my own family were profoundly deaf (my grandfather for example had to lip read) so the series really resonates with me. The novel is well written, the plot is good, the pace is fast from the beginning and draws you into the storyline straight away. There are so many secrets amongst the students and staff which adds big problems to the investigation but intrigued the reader. These secrets emerge piecemeal which only deepens the mystery further which keeps you invested in seeking the truth. The case has a personal element for Paige as an ex-boyfriend works at the school which is a really interesting addition to the story as we learn more about her and her background. Her ex is a character who makes your fists and teeth clench and though completely unlikeable he does add another layer to the storytelling! The characters are good in particular Paige and the police team, the students and teachers are well portrayed too and as the secrets emerge we learn just how manipulated they have been. I like the frisson of something between Paige and Rav and would dearly like that to go somewhere!!! The author creates some good moments of tension, some creepiness and uses locations and snowy weather to real effect. The conclusion is quite dramatic and maybe a bit left field and one I definitely didn’t see coming!
Overall, another gripping read from Nell Pattison and I look forward to seeing what deep water Paige gets into next!
With thanks to NetGalley and Avon for the ARC for an unbiased review.
This is a story about a missing boy and a murder. In the snow. On a trip. And the missing child is deaf.
Ok so this was incredible. The twists and the turns in this kept me guessing throughout the novel.
The representation of the deaf community is done really well. I am hearing so can't speak personally, but I appreciated the variations of needs of the students, as would be the norm for a school such as this one.
Thank you Netgalley for this copy
When a school for deaf children takes an overnight trip to the woods, overnight everything changes. Five teenagers go to bed and one of them is missing by morning, and to make things worse there doesn't look to be a struggle and he looks to have left on his own accord. To make things worse while Leon, the student, is missing, the body of his teacher is found in the woods close to where the cabin was.
Paige, a sign language interpreter, comes in to help everyone in the group to the police and the kids to help everything go along to assist. While Paige is there to help the whole investigation she finds out that one of the teachers, Mike, is an ex boyfriend of hers, since that relationship ended horribly because of the situation it ended and all this will taint Paige's view of the whole situation.
Paige has the feeling that something more sinister is going on with the school and the kids and when the kids are back at the school she's not wrong the killer strikes again!
I love Paige as a central character, she's very balanced and while she comes close to letting her personal feelings get in the way of the investigation she doesn't.
This was a new type of story for me and I enjoyed it. I also haven't read this author before and I will definitely be looking into more novels written by this author.
Thanks Netgalley for allowing me to read this book. This book is about an overnight trip to the woods that turns deadly when a teacher at a deaf school winds up dead. This is the first book I gave read by this author and it won't be my last. It kept me guessing until the very end. Very well written.
This book was phenomenal from start to finish - a truly gripping Murder mystery with genuinely shocking twists and turns.
Interpreter Paige Northwood is called to a park to interpret for some students and staff from a school for the deaf. The head has been murdered and one of the students is missing. Is the student suspect or victim?
There are complications from an awful ex boyfriend and her feelings about a colleague to add to the volatile mix. Will Paige be able to solve this crime and keep her life?
What I loved most about this book was there were enough suspects, clues and red herrings to allow the reader to work it out for themselves if they were paying attention. It really gave my brain a workout. The whole thing built to a satisfying crescendo and the interspersed flashbacks leading to the murder offered valuable insights as the story unfolded.
This is a sequel to a previously published book, although you don’t have to have read that one first (I haven’t) and it doesn’t spoil the story either - I will definitely be reading that one next!
A school for the deaf takes an overnight trip to the snowy woods. Five teenagers go to sleep, but only four wake up. Leon is missing, and a teacher’s body is found in the forest.
Sign language interpreter Paige Northwood is brought in to help with interrogations. Everyone at the school has a motive for murder – but they all have an alibi.

This is my first book by this author and I quite enjoyed it!
The idea of a sign language interpreter for a crime committed in the hearing impaired community was a unique and interesting concept.
The characterization was good where all the students are behaving suspiciously as if they are hiding something. Even the staff have motives, so as the investigation progresses, you end up suspecting multiple characters.
Though I finally did guess who was the murderer, I wasn't sure as to the reasons. There is quite a lot of suspense along with twists and turns throughout the plot to keep you engaged till the end.
Thank You to NetGalley and Avon Books UK for this ARC!
I loved this authors first book called The Silent House so I was very excited to get my hands on the next instalment featuring sign language interpreter Paige Northwood. I wasn’t disappointed and would say I even enjoyed this one more than the first. This is a fab whodunnit mystery that left me guessing right up until the end and I couldn’t get through it fast enough! Would definitely recommend and can’t wait for Nell’s next book in the series.
Thank you to NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book.
This book is the second in a series about a British Sign Language interpreter called Paige Northwood. She freelances her skills and works closely with Humberside Police. The story centres around a group of students and staff from Lincoln School for the Deaf, and they are on a weekend away staying in the grounds of Normanby Hall. It is noticed that a student, Leon, is missing. The Head Teacher, Mr Wilkinson, goes to look for Leon, but doesn’t arrive back. At this point the Police are called in, along with Paige Northwood.
We read the story in the present times, with backtracks to the past. It also includes some of the characters from the first book in the series.
The story is fast paced, with twists and turns all the way through, with characters that can be relatable, and diverse. The plot lines are very unique as I’ve never read a series of books before this series that focuses on the deaf community. And it works exceptionally well.
The book kept me engaged, and was really well written. Would highly recommend, but would also recommend reading the first book before this one, as there are references in this book to the previous story.
“Silent Night” is is the second book in a series. I have not read the first, but other than some mentions of things that must have happened in the first book, I didn’t feel that reading out of order hurt me. The book was good and the twists did surprise me.
What was meant to be a school outing quickly becomes a police investigation when one of the students from the Lincoln School for the Deaf goes missing.
What follows is a well crafted story full of twists and turns that kept me hooked all the way to the end.
The characters are diverse and believable, the sign language is fully embedded into the story and the continuing snowfall adds an eerie touch to the landscape.
Although part of a series, this book can easily be read as a stand alone.
Thank you Netgalley and Avon Books for the ARC.
Having read book one in this series I was really looking forward to what the author had in store for the characters in book 2. Whilst I did enjoy seeing more of Paige Northwood as she worked as a sign language interpreter for the police there were times that I found her irritating, especially as some of the things she thought or did became very repetitive. She also almost became cleverer than the police as very nearly took control of the whole investigation or that’s how it felt. I didn’t feel the same tension and mystery that I had felt in book one.
However, the story had plenty of twists and turns keeping me reading to find out who the killer was. The story is told in two timelines one in the present after a body is found and when everyone realises that Leon a live in profoundly deaf student has gone missing whilst on a weekend away. The other timeline is 16 hours before the murder and counting down by two hourly increments interspersed within the chapters. How much do the other 4 students really know? When asked to be interpreter for the police the last person Paige had expected to see was her ex boyfriend Mike, this brings back some bad memories, and Mike doesn’t waste any time trying to manipulate Paige again.
Where is Leon? Is he dead? Or is he hiding? Did he witness the murder? Or is he the killer? DS Rav Singh is running the case, this being his first case since making DS so no pressure.
Overall a good story, but there are a number of characters I just didn’t personally warm to. You can read this as a stand-alone novel as the bits of background are filled in within the story except for the previous case Paige had worked on.
I look forward to seeing what happens in the next book I’m hoping that Paige will become a little more assertive. Just something missing in this one.
I would like to thank #netgalley and #Avonbooks for an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest, fair and unbiased review.
I have read the first book in this series and enjoyed this one just as much. I love the idea of the main character being an interpreter for the hearing impaired, it is quite an original idea.
In Silent Night a boy has gone missing and a head teacher has been murdered on a school trip. The police need an interpreter as the school is a school for the deaf. There were many twists and turns throughout the book, and it moves backwards and forwards from the present to before the murder, which made it suspenseful. I can’t wait for the next book!
This was an intense fast book for me. The mystery and drama is a fresh outtake from this book. What’s interesting is that this is the first book for me with the characters who are hearing impaired use their skills of sign language. My heart was pounding with the suspense and action. Somewhere in the mix romance bloomed between the two main characters. The distrust, self- confidence and trying to heal a broken heart is well written to draw in the readers.
A school for the deaf. A murder. A missing student. It’s no surprise that no one heard a thing, but what if someone saw something?
This was such an enjoyable read! I truly loved learning about the deaf community, all the while reading a stellar thriller storyline! I did have a small complaint about the protagonist, because come on! So often she found a VITAL piece of evidence and didn’t think to tell anyone which drove me INSANE. But I would be more than happy to read this authors work again!
I really enjoyed this book it is super addictive and well paced. The story is really gripping. Set against the backdrop of a snowy winter landscape a number of murders take place amidst a group of hearing impaired young people. I love the main character Paige and the relationships she has with her sister and the police. I also love the extra dimension the story being immersed within the deaf community brings. This book follows on brilliantly from the first book and in fact I think it is even better than the first one. I don’t think you need to have read the first book in the series but if you get the chance it is worth it as it does tie in nicely and helps you to get to understand the characters and relationships even better,
Thank you Netgalley for the ARC to this book for an honest review.
Students and teachers from a school for the deaf take an overnight trip to the woods during the winter. When the head teacher is found dead and a student is missing the police and deaf interpreter Paige Northwood are tasked to find the missing child and killer.
The book has a lot of twists and turns and keeps you guessing. It seemed a bit long-winded to me and it seemed to focus more on Paige and her current and past relationships then the case itself. Though her past relationship with her ex, Mike, who happens to also work at the school does make you start believing he is a suspect. The teenagers hiding things from the police and Paige thinking most everything she seems to see or hear are not important for the police to know was a bit annoying but seeing Paige get more involved was interesting.
I did like that this book revolved around a deaf community which I rarely see in books. The character development was good and though the book is the second of a series it can be read as a standalone.
Silent Night was a clever and twisty police procedural. The angle of working with deaf people was intriguing and really interesting. I really enjoyed it and I learnt quite alot, things that I had not considered before for people without hearing. I have not read the first book, Silent House but I will absolutely be adding it to my list.
A dead head teacher and a missing 15 year old student. Sign language interpreter, Paige Northwood is called in by the police to help work the case. The student is from a school for the deaf and went missing during an overnight school trip to the woods. Both the students and teachers are keeping secrets from the police and it is becoming hard to know who to believe. And for Paige, her past comes back to confront her but could he be a killer?
Thanks to Avon Books UK and Netgalley for my advanced copy of this book to read.
Whilst camping with the deaf school Leon goes missing and body is found. Paige Northwood is a British Sign Language interpreter she has worked with the police on another case and is back, reluctantly, to help again.
I really enjoyed the story line. I liked how it was centered around deaf children and the daily challenges they have. I was skeptical on this area but the author did the deaf community justice. I was drawn into the book from the start. I loved all the twists, the secrets and the tension. It's quite dramatic and fast paced. I loved it
I was really looking forward to reading this book since I enjoyed the first book, The Silent House so much, the first crime thriller I’ve read featuring the deaf community and an interpreter. Silent Night follow a similar vein, Paige is called upon by the police yet again when the headmaster of a deaf school is found murdered and a vulnerable student goes missing. I felt I got to know Paige much better in this book and she started to come into her own. The author delves into her back story. She was in an emotionally abusive relationship for some years with a man who controlled her. At the end, he locked her in their house with no food or drink for four days to ‘protect her’ and she had to escape by smashing a window open with her arm, badly injuring herself. These painful memories resurface as her ex is working at the deaf school and seems to be a changed man. Like any decent thriller, Silent Night is full of misdirection and twists and turns which keep you guessing all the way through. I’d no idea who the killer was and what their motivations were. I hope there’s another thriller featuring Paige on the way.
Five teenagers from a deaf school are on an overnight school trip to the snowy woods at the start of winter. In the morning one of them is missing and a teacher is dead. The four remaining students close ranks and if they do have idea what might have happened to Leon, the missing boy they’re not saying.
Paige Northwood is an interpreter for the deaf who is called in by the police to help interview the students and teachers. To her horror, she discovers her ex-boyfriend, Mike, who treated her badly for years before an acrimonious split three years ago now works at the school. Being at the school with the police where students and staff are being interviewed, she can’t help overhear things about the case that she shouldn’t hear and finds herself getting involved in the case.
The closed community of a deaf school, with some students also orphans in care is an interesting location for a murder mystery, but I would have preferred the focus to be on the police and the murder investigation rather than split between that and Paige’s personal life which only served to slow down the plot. This is the second book in this series featuring Paige but I don't yet feel I'm getting to know her yet (although I do now know a lot about her past). She's not a particularly engaging character and isn't well equipped to play amateur detective, keeping information to herself that should have been handed on to police and putting herself at risk.
This book was very interesting. I love the back and forth from paige to other characters before the murder. I honestly was very surprised at the ending.
Firstly a big thank you to Avon for my copy to review on netgalley i loved Nells debut which is the first in this series so was thrilled to read this.
Raced through this, Nell is a fantastic writer who captures the attention of the reader and has you hooked. Its absolutely fascinating to get a insight into the deaf/hard of hearing community.
Well written with a fast plot and twists and turns. Great charactars and i really enjoyed the charactar development of Paige as we learn more about her past.
I enjoyed this and did not see where this was heading, unpredictable and gripping.
Published 12th November and i look forward to reading more in this series.
Silent Night is a well crafted story. I was hooked all the way to the end thanks to all the twist and turns.
I have to start off by saying that this book is second in a series although I have read it as a stand-alone and has no difficulty in following the story.
I thoroughly enjoyed the fact that it is set in a kind of locked-room environment and I loved the descriptions and the eerie environment that made the read more intriguing.
There were great twists in the plot and mystery that I didn’t see coming which I really enjoyed as well.
It was a bit slow to start with and I had a bit of difficulty getting into it at the beginning but I was invested to find out what happened and I’m glad I kept reading.
I did not particularly loved Paige and found her behaviour a bit dubious. Some of her past is slowly revealed and I am curious to know more even though I don’t know if I will ever love the character. The students and teachers were all really mysterious and interesting characters and I was a bit shocked with the way the plot ended.
Overall, a great plot with good twists and turns and with a great setting. I am curious to read the first and future books!.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Avon Books UK for this advanced digital copy in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.
A school for the deaf and a headteacher found dead. Silent Night keeps you hungry for more.
Before beginning to review, there’s an aspect of this book I would like to touch upon. I’ve never read a book before that has a deaf character, let alone so many people with their own unique lives and identities.
This was very refreshing and I felt privileged that the author Nell took the time to teach us, the readers, about the wrong and right ways to support someone who is hard of hearing.
A lot of the book is written in italics which expresses the use of BSL being used. Whilst of course, at its core this book is a thriller, I greatly appreciated the way this book was written and I think a lot of readers would feel the same way.
From the word go I found myself suspicious of everyone! The awful ex, missing student, anyone who is slightly relevant to the story.
This is the second book in a series however, it can definitely be read standalone. It often feels like this book was written to be more about the main character than the murders though, which I have no problem with but slightly mars the overall feel.
An encapsulating read that is definitely worth picking up if you prefer your Christmas cosy vibes to be more severe and thrilling.
📖Book Review📖
Silent Night by @writernell
Publication date - 12th November 2020.
Thank you to @avon_books and @netgalley for this advanced readers copy, in exchange for an honest review.
I was so excited to see that there was a follow up to ‘The Silent house’.
I LOVED this book, I find Paige Northwood’s world so interesting and loved being back in it. I enjoy seeing how she interacted with both the students and the work she completed with the police. There was so many twists, it held my interest throughout.
I liked that there were mentions of the first case that Singh and Northwood worked on together. Sometimes in a series, the past can be forgotten. However can Max please go away 😂, so these characters can get together?! So much chemistry 💕💕
I would highly recommend this book, but do suggest reading the first in the series, so you can really get to know the characters.
Initially I was concerned I was not going to get along with this book as the first few chapters kept referring to the previous book, which I hadn't read.
However once that disappeared and the story became more about the current story I then became very engrossed with the story, and needed to finish. Now I need to go back and read the first book and then the next etc.
I learnt so much about the deaf community but it wasn't educational speak if that makes sense.
Really tight plot and all the strands came together.
Fully recommend you will not be disappointed.
I was given an advance copy by netgalley to review in exchange for an honest and fair review which I have done so.
This is the second book in the series, but I had no problem catching up with the story line as the author gave enough back story to explain the characters and their relationships. In fact I was given so much I am intrigued to go ack and read book one at this time. Our heroine, Paige, is a BSL translator, (the British version of ASL) who has assisted with one police case previously. That is when she and DS Rav Singh met, a few months back. We learn that she and Singh have a complicated relationship of sorts, but that is not a prime story line. in this story, Paige is needed to translate for the police at a local school/home where many deaf youth attend or reside. The first murder does not take place at the school, but rather while some of the students are on a weekend getaway with classmates and school staff. in additions to the murder, one of the students as gone missing. As the story progresses we meet Paige's sister, her boyfriend, and her ex boyfriend the abusive Mike. Mike is now working at the school using the BSL he learned from this relationship with Paige and her family who are deaf. Some red herrings are thrown at the reader and this reader was sure one of those red herrings was the truth. For those who enjoy detective stories with an outsider as the heroine, this is a good series for you. Get in now while the cases are new. I give this a solid 4 star review.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Fast paced, heart pounding and unputdownable
This is the second book in the Paige Northwood series
A school for the deaf takes an overnight trip, the next morning a boy is missing and a teacher is dead. The police employ Paige Northwood, a British Sign Language interpreter, to help with investigations. The clock is ticking down as hopes of finding the boy alive are dwindling. EVERYONE is a suspect.
I could not put this book down. I literally inhaled it! This is my favourite book so far of 2020! Every chapter there was a cliff hanger, every cliff hanger I was suspecting someone different! If there was a book version of 20 cups of coffee, this is it! It kept me up wondering what was next!
The only complaint I have is that the third book in the series isnt already here!
This book is released on the 12th of November! And is currently priced at £2.99 on Kindle!
Thank you to @netgalley and @avon_books for my ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Silent Night is the second book in the series by Nell Pattison. I really liked the first book and this one did not disappoint either. Paige is a sign language interpreter who is once again called on to translate for the police. A group of deaf teenagers go on a trip in the winter. The next morning one of them is missing. The teacher who went out to find him is found murdered. Lots of twists and turns as well as typical teenagers keeping secrets. Who is the killer? Who else is in danger? Read it and find out!
Thanks to netgalley and Avon Books UK for the arc
This is the second book in the series, by this author, with Paige Northwood. I haven't read the first book, but after several mini references to that case, I know I will be going to read it next!
The story follows the murder of a staff member from a school for deaf children, the shock of a missing student, and the exploration of many misdeeds and untruths from people who attend the school.
What a whirlwind of twists and turns! At every step I was questioning a different character, who could it be?
The ending was a surprise, but not unwelcome! I love a book that can keep me guessing right to the very end, but still tie up all the little facts we seen throughout the book.
The style of writing is clear, concise and clever. I enjoyed it.
Im looking forward to the 3rd installment in Paige's forays with the law enforcement.
Silent Night is the story of five teenagers from a school for the deaf who are on an overnight trip in the woods. One of the students disappears, as does a teacher who goes to look for him. This is the second in a series, and it’s a good, fast paced whodunnit that will keep you guessing right to the end. Interesting premise, as the story is told through a sign language interpreter who works with the police. It’s very well done, and I’m definitely going to go back and read the first book. I received an ARC of this book from the publisher through @NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I really liked this book. It kept my attention and I had to find out what happened. I would highly recommend this book.
A wintry school trip heads for disaster when the headteacher turns up dead and a teenage boy is missing, did he kill his teacher or has something sinister happened to him?
Paige Northwood, a freelance British Sign Language interpreter is called out by DS Singh to help with this case, the school trip was organised by the local school for deaf children and the boy who went missing, Leon, is a resident. His friends don’t seem to be telling Paige and the police everything, she gets the impression that they are hiding something.
Paige is also horrified to find out that her ex Mike now works at the school, his presence unsettles her and it is clear that he definitely has some unfinished business with her.
It soon becomes clear that the teens and the teachers are closing ranks, they seem to wanting to save their own skins rather than find out the fate of Leon. As Paige and DS Singh dig deeper the extent of the deception becomes clear.
Now the one thing I did not realise when I requested this book was the fact it was the second in a series, quite frankly I happily read this as a standalone novel but I definitely will go back and read the first. The setting is perfect with plenty of snow thrown in to the mix to add a little more claustrophobia to the story.
I think for a murder mystery fan this will tick all the boxes.
Thanks to Net Galley for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to Netgalley and Avon Books UK for the arc of Silent Night by Nell Pattison.
4 star read for me- this was a great read, i read within 1 day, had me page turning right to the end, i loved it, well written as well.
⭐⭐⭐⭐
This is an interesting enjoyable read. I enjoyed finding out more about Paige who is an intriguing character. Reading about the school was interesting. There are some good twists in the plot and a few unlikeable characters.
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy.
Nell Pattinson is a very promising and uprising author who has another novel I cannot wait to read. If it is anything like this one, I will be thrilled. A school for the deaf has taken some children on an overnight camping trip in the winter. The next morning young Leon is missing and the teacher has been found dead. We are then introduced to Paige who is an interpreter with the police department as well as a detective. She does her job of interviewing everyone there and while they all have an alibi, she knows the killer is near and she needs to stop him/her from killing again but can she? This is based on a true story and that compelled me to really want to read it. Truly an awesome read that kept me up wanting more and in reality did not see the ending coming. The author does an exceptional job with research yet it does not feel as though you are reading a story based on such. This is a fast paced read that will keep you entertained until you close the last chapter.
Thank you to netgalley as well as the author/publisher for allowing me to read this book in exchange for my honest review.
I loved silent house and i loved this one.
I don't know what it is but you get drawn in to the characters and the story. I thought i had guessed this so many times during the book. I was wrong on so so so many levels.
I loves it. I cant wait for more
Quite a good book,
I didn’t like it quite as much as her debut novel, however it was quite nice to find out what main character Paige Northwood is up to :)
I give it 8/10
This is my second book by Nell Pattison. I love the way she writes, her stories are so descriptive. I also appreciate that she includes deaf and hard of hearing characters in her books. I am deaf myself and it is so refreshing to read about people who are like me. Sign language interpreter Paige Northwood was in the first book, The Silent House, as well but this is a complete stand alone.
I enjoyed getting to know each of the characters along with the backstory as I tried to guess the identity of the murderer, paying attention to all the clues along the way. This alone made the book difficult to put down and drew me right into the story. The author reveals just enough information about each character to make you wonder about their true motivations and their reasons for coming to the sleep away. The story was, however, an eerie, tension-filled and suspenseful story that was fully immersive as we put ourselves in the shoes of everyone involved. It wasn’t at all graphic or gory though — just a fun though unsettling whodunit.
So I absolutely loved this book. I mean, how can you not love a murder mystery that takes place in the woods in the midst of a storm? I’m so glad that I went into this knowing very little about it and there were plenty of twists and surprises to keep me turning the page. The author does an excellent job at throwing you off track, and I was unable to correctly guess who the killer was. Which is good — I hate when I guess the ending when I’m only part way through a story. All in all a clever, atmospheric and fun Whodunit with vivid, relatable characters.
Firstly when I saw the cover I had to get it because what else do people do with gorgeous covers.. Huge thanks to Avon for my ARC.I enjoyed this book thoroughly (read the premise and believe me). It tells the story of Paige who is a sign language interpreter who works with the Humberside Police as and when required. Its a snowy day (think Christmas) when the staff discover a student is missing . The story is full of twists and turns that kept me on the edge. I am here for representation and highly recommended it .
A school trip to the woods turns into a murder mystery, and Paige Northwood, a freelance British Sign Language interpreter, joins the investigation into uncovering what happened. Nell Pattison crafts an engaging police procedural highlighting a community that often isn't featured in similar stories. The book is a little on the lengthy side, but Pattison uses the pages to create interesting characters with depth that balance out the story. The plot is tense throughout as the mystery builds, filled with twists and turns that keep you turning the page to see just what happened in the woods that night, who killed the head teacher, and where did Leon, one of the Deaf students on the trip, disappear to?
Thank you @avon_books and @netgalley for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.
This is my first book by Nell Pattinson and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I haven't read the first book in this series however I don't feel like you need to have read it as there's enough detail to fill you in. Wonderful representation of the deaf community - pleasantly surprising. Great plot, easy to read, and overall enjoyable story.
I had really been looking forward to reading Silent Night by Nell Pattison and it did not disappoint. I haven't read the previous book but there was enough back story in this one to understand the characters and their relationships without spoiling the previous story (which I intend to read). I really liked the characters of Paige and Singh and look forward to reading further books including them.
The story kept me hooked right until the end (I stayed up till 2am to finish it!) and the ending was a complete surprise to me.
Thank you to NetGalley and Avon Books UK for my ARC.
This is the second outing for Paige Northwood. She is a freelance sign language interpreter who the police call upon to help. She also likes to investigate a little herself.
Silent night is where a group of teenagers from a deaf school go camping. As bad weather closes in the head teacher is found murdered and one of the students is missing. There are lots of motives and lots of alibis.
Nell Pattison does a great job of bringing the deaf community into her books. A great read and a fab series.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the opportunity to read an ARC
DISCLAIMER : Thank you, Netgalley and Avon Books for providing me with an ARC copy. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Silent Night by Nell Pattison is a mystery/thriller/suspense. I haven't read many thrillers this year, and when I saw this title on Netgalley, I knew I needed to get it. When I got this book, I didn't realize it was part of a series, and this was the second book. It didn't say on Goodreads either, just that it's the second book from the author. Luckily for me, the books can be read as standalone, which is amazing, and I am glad I picked it.
The story follows Paige Northwood, who is an interpreter for the deaf community. She is working as a freelance interpreter and is struggling to get jobs. So, when she gets the call from the police for an interpreter job she takes it up. The story revolves around a murder and a missing child. The kids from the school for the deaf are taken on a weekend trip to a cabin. The headteacher finds out that one of the kids is missing along with his possessions. It was snowing badly, and the teacher heads out to look for him. After a while of waiting for the teacher's return, the remaining people realize that the two were not coming back. The police are informed, and Paige is brought in to interpret the sign language. The Police and Paige, on their search for the missing visitors, find the body of the headteacher leaving, more questions than answers to the mystery of the missing boy.
I loved the plot, and it was unique. In my opinion, the inclusion of the deaf community and the nuances attached to their lives were very well depicted. The characters were all intriguing, and they all had something to hide, making the twists and turns very interesting. I was engrossed in the story the whole time, and I finished it in a day. It is one of those suspenseful mysteries where the mystery of the events takes a new shape with each piece of information unveiled.
I highly recommend checking this story out if you are a fan of mystery/thriller where the protagonist is playing detective to solve the different crimes. It is one of those police procedural stories that will take you along the journey to discover the clues and put together the puzzle. I did not figure out the culprit, and there were not many clues to show the readers who the killer was, and it shocked me. I enjoyed it and gave it 3.5-4 stars. If you are in the mood for a quick, genre-change, and suspenseful detective type story, go ahead and check this title out.
