I did not expect this. Five stars for making me laugh.
Captain Tom Moore is the guy who did laps with his pushchair in his garden, collecting donations for the Corvid-19 relief fund - at 100 years old. I had heard of this, but either not his name or already forgotten it, because I am that bad with names.
This issue of the little people BIG DREAMS series is likewise collecting money for the NHS, so it makes sense that they chose his life story for this.
At one point, a phrasing felt off, saying he was determined to fix the motorcycle he found in a barn and bought, without telling us if he succeeded. I am just going to assume he did. Apart from that, another solid installment.
The arc was provided by the publisher.
Absolutely loved reading this book, and was pleasantly surprised that little people big dreams included such a relevant and recent personality. I love Captain Tom Moore's story and I think that this book does a fantastic job at illustrating it. Some of the depictions of this inspiration depict him for his current achievements of raising a phenomenon amount of money for the NHS during the pandemic, however i think the choice to include his experience during the war elegantly shows what built up the Captains personality, and which may have helped fuel his determination to give back.
A beautiful book for children.
We loved to read it.
The Illustrations are very nice and beautiful.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
This is the first book that I have read in this collection, and it was such a pleasure to read. The illustrations were beautiful, and the story, despite being short, is so touching.
Kids will absolutely love it!
This is a lovely book all about the life of Sir Tom. Kids will absolutely love it. The illustrations are brilliant too
This is timely addition to this wonderful collection. Captain Tom has captured the heart of the nation and has been given the gift of his own children's book. As expected it is beautifully illustrated.
Incredibly inspiring to see Tom's feat immortalised in a book for children to show them how the smallest little thing can make the biggest difference!
This series is always a joy to read, it’s a really nice introduction to well known people for little children. Of course the plot is always a little bit fast but that’s to be expected and it’s totally understandable.
This one here is about Captain Tom Moore. I clearly remember reading about him in the papers and I was so touched by his project. During the pandemic he decided to raise some money for the NHS, he was aiming at one thousand and instead managed to raise 30 million pounds! What an incredible feat! I'm sure they were much appreciated and also very helpful in the fight against the virus. He's truly a modern hero.
Absolutely loved this, the art is as perfect as ever, the story is wonderfand inspiring, just like the man himself. I was ecstatic to see Tom got his own book and that some proceeds go to the NHS together charities, still continuing his great work even now, an inspiration and real hero.

Captain Tom Moore is another fantastic book in the Little People, Big Dreams series from Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara. The Little People Big Dreams series is the most beautiful set of non-fiction children’s books I have ever come across. Each gorgeous hard cover book is a child-friendly biography of a significant person from history. There are so many inspirational men and women to choose from.
Each book focuses on one individual from history. Many are quite recent, bringing history from living memory to life for children. The stories are very relatable, starting with when the individual was a child (just like the reader). The development of their passion and dreams for the future are clearly explained in an accessible but detailed manner. There is so much to learn from each biography! The books focus on positive traits, creating wonderful role models. Resilience, hard work, determination, a positive attitude and a sense of what is right play centre stage as children see that anything is possible if you follow your dreams. The wide range of role models allows children to expand their worlds. With such a broad series, there is something to suit every child and every interest.
The books are brightly coloured and so appealing. They have a feeling of quality inside and out. With a manageable amount of text on each page and engaging illustrations, the reader is drawn into the fascinating facts and stories of overcoming obstacles and achieving great things. They can’t help but be inspired!
Captain Tom Moore follows the story of this inspirational man through his childhood, early career and into the Second World War when he served in India, Burma and Sumatra. His passion for engines and things that move is a constant theme, culminating in his amazing fundraising walk during the Covid-19 pandemic. He is a man who cares deeply for others and does all he can to make sure those in his care feel safe, secure and happy. In Spring 2020, 100-year-old Captain Tom Moore raised over £30 million for NHS Charities Together by walking 100 lengths of his garden. He inspired the nation and brought joy in a dark time. The book ends with Captain Sir Tom Moore receiving his knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II.
A percentage of the sales of this book will go to NHS Charities Together.
These fantastic books would be welcome in any primary classroom as well as on a bookshelf at home. They deserve to be read over and over again as children get to know the wonderful people within.
Thank you to NetGalley and Frances Lincoln Children’s Books for this important book!
It would be rather appropriate if this book were titled Little Dreams, Big People. Born into humble beginnings in Yorkshire, Captain Tom Moore would lead a life that would see him train as a civil engineer, fight for his country and enjoy plenty of daily walks. Always one to rise to a challenge having lived through the Second World War, when the global health pandemic struck in late 2019 Tom decided to do what he does best at his age and went for a nice long walk.
The war veteran only wanted to raise a little bit of money for the nurses and doctors in the UK who were battling to treat people who were victims of Corona Virus. What he didn’t anticipate was that his walk in the garden would attract the attention of the world, see him raise millions of pounds, get a special invite to Buckingham Palace to meet the Queen and receive a special award…
This is a truly inspirational and uplifting read that goes to show ordinary people are more than capable of achieving extraordinary things. It is also a big spoonful of kindness and gratitude; having being looked after by the nurses and doctors of the NHS following a fall, Moore wanted to give something back. Little did he know how much he would be giving back.
At the back of the the book there is a short overview of Moore’s life which includes key facts and dates and a historical timeline featuring photographs. The book is delightfully illustrated with bright and bold artwork and the story is told in short and simple sentences.
Recommended for 5+.
With thanks to Netgalley and Frances Lincoln Publishers for the ARC.
this is delightful series that introduces young children to some amazing role models that have helped our world. This is about the hero of 2020, Captain Sir Tom Moore, who raised over £30 million for charities in the year he celebrated his one hundredth birthday. He is an inspiration and I am so glad that children can learn about him and his earlier life.
This is another great book to add to the Little People, Big Dreams collection!
I love this series as they are perfect introductions to young people about some of the most famous and influential people from our past and present and are also a reminder about how these people have also changed our history, Captain Tom Moore was unknown until the Covid-19 outbreak happened in the UK and we went into lockdown and his fundraising for the NHS came to light. This book was a great introduction to him and his life..
It is 5 stars from me for this one, very highly recommended and can't wait for my daughter to get involved in the series
I read this on a day more lockdown restrictions were announced and got very emotional. This is another brilliant and well deserved addition to the Little People, Big Dreams series and a perfect example of someone setting out to make a small contribution in life but making a massive impact. Captain Tom Moore is an inspiration to us all. As we have all come to expect from this series, the illustrations are stunning. A great addition to any bookshelf!
The exceptional Little People, BIG DREAMS series prides itself on providing child-friendly biographies of renowned public figures and celebrities and in this, the fifty-first book in the series, we explore the life and times of lockdown hero and the man who captured the hearts of the nation, Captain Tom Moore. This potted biography runs from his birth and early years in Yorkshire through to being called up to fight for his country and on to the 100 laps of his garden to raise much-needed funds for the NHS as the pandemic hit. Captain Tom Moore is an inspiration and a modest, decent, charming man with a can-do attitude and a twinkle in his eye. His story is an important one with a great message for youngsters, and the young at heart, to receive.
What's superb is there is just enough to enable a child to become curious yet not enough to overwhelm, which is crucial at this stage in their reading career, and the colourful, fun illustrations by Christophe Jacques complement the text perfectly. I feel strongly that children should learn about the importance of having dreams and striving to achieve in life and that is the message the book gives out. Adults will enjoy reading this alongside youngsters and learning together makes it all the more fun. It's a wonderfully engaging and simple to understand book that helps kids with literacy and fosters a message about the enjoyment of reading. You simply cannot go wrong with this series in general as everything is executed perfectly and tailored beautifully to youngsters.
I can not recommend each of these books highly enough and there is more than enough variety in the people they choose to cover to appeal to all manner of young ones. Simply superb. Many thanks to Frances Lincoln Children's Books for an ARC.

The ‘My First Little People, Big Dreams’ series provides informative and inspirational biographies about people who left a mark on this earth, no matter what difficulties they have encountered.
These stories are very short, but that’s because they’re books for children, so it’s totally understandable.
I think they are a very smart and wonderful way to introduce little children to such important figures.

Captain Tom Moore is the epitome of "Little People, Big Dreams". His story shows that you don't need to be a brainy inventor or a great artist to make a difference to the world. It also shows that something that started "little" can turn into something really BIG! 30 Million Pounds did Tom Moore raise this spring, that really is incredible. I wish him lots and lots more of his daily walks.
