Now this was a good book. It’s one of those that really makes you think and leaves you pondering the ending even when it’s over.
- Paige is such a complex and well developed character. She doesn’t take things at face value and her sense of curiosity drives the story forward.
- I love the representation in this book and it also made me consider how I could be more adaptable in my day to day life.
- I thought the plot was well thought out and Nell clearly made the effort to properly consider the mystery from all angles.
- I really liked how this book played out. The pacing was just right, the writing was great and I’ll definitely read another one of these books.
- I will say, the drama with Max was what let this book down. I don’t think it was needed but this book is clearly a part of a companion series so this storyline likely makes more sense if you have read the first two books. I just think this part took away from the story and I wasn’t interested in the romance.
I would definitely recommend this!
I received this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Another great book by Nell Pattison!
I really enjoyed continuing on with Paige's story (although you do not need to read the previous books to know what's going on) The stoty had lots of twists and turns that kept me guessing! The book was very well written and I can't wait gor the next one!
Definite ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

A good read.
Lukas phoned Paige Northwood to tell her that his house is burning and his wife Nadia is in the house. And then police found that Nadia was dead before the fire started. Who set the fire,? Why they killed Nadia? Lukas refused to say anything in his defence to the police. Now, how would they find the killer?
The premise was interesting but the ending was so so. By the time I reached the ending, I wasn't much interested in knowing who the killer is. This author's first book was interesting from the first page to the last but her other two are ok ok. Overall it's a one time read.
I loved the characters of Anna and Rav Singh.
Narration of the story was good.
Thanks to NetGalley and Avon for giving me an advanced copy of this psychological thriller.
Another great read from Nell Pattison.
Paige Northwood the British Sign Language interpreter returns in this title , she is working part time with social worker Sasha, Sasha herself is deaf and Paige signs for her when needed.
An individual on Sasha’s case load is Lukas , the story begins with Paige receiving a call from him saying his house is on fire.
The book is an easy read the style of writing flows from one chapter to the next . The police officer Rav Singh is back in this novel and also the churlish DI Forest who often shows her dislike of Paige .
The characters are written in an authentic way and are likeable and gel together well , I like how the book shows the hours before the fire and returns to the present day. I usually find this confusing , but Nell Pattison’s writing is straightforward , therefore causing no issues.
There were twists in the story that I did not envisage , and I was surprised to find out the identity of the offender, which is always a good sign,
Overall a compelling read highly recommended!
Thanks to NetGalley and Avon books for this arc copy.
Fantastic storyline. Kept me up til the early hours as I needed to find out more.
Definitely recommend to thriller fans.
Nell Pattison does it again! I am blown away by the ability this author has to bring my in time and time again. I am obsessed with her characterisation, her storytelling and her ability to keep the reader gripped.
I need more!!
This is the third in the series and I have to say every book has had me hooked, desperate for more!!
We meet Paige again, she is now working as a sign language interpreter for Social Worker Sasha and freelances for the local police. She is dating Max who wants to take their relationship to the next level.
Paige is drawn into a murder case involving one of Sasha’s clients. Lucas arrives home to find his house on fire and his wife Nadia murdered. Lucas is arrested for the murder but his silence is making him look guiltier.
Paige and Sasha are adamant that Lucas is innocent and start to investigate into Lucas’s life to see what he is hiding..
I love Paige, the way she throws herself into being an amateur detective, even putting her own life at risk. I do find myself screaming at her NO, as she does not always think before jumping into danger!!
A series that I am hoping will continue.
Thank you to Netgalley for my copy in exchange for a review.
I was so excited when I heard that there was a new Paige Northwood book coming out, I just love this series!
As always, we are launched straight into the action when Paige gets a call from Lukas to say that his house is on fire. She rushes to the scene, and from then on she is entangled in a web of lies, suspicion and danger.
Paige always ends up getting in too deep, she just can’t help getting involved, and even though at times I wished I could get into the book and drag her back from potential danger, she keeps ploughing on, getting into dodgy situations.
Her personal life is an important part of the book too, and she has some big decisions to make.
This fast-paced, dramatic and compelling book had me turning the pages so fast, I just could not put it down. Another fabulous addition to the series. My only complaint is that the ending left me wanting more, I hope she can write the next one quickly, as I really need to know what happens next for Paige!
This is the 2nd book I’ve read in this series and I enjoyed them both immensely you are gripped from the first page. I have to say it was very disturbing to think you have a fire and murder in your house and your deaf it’s just unimaginable. . The husband Lukas obviously knows more than he’s saying as he does say to Paige he knows who’s done it then doesn’t say anymore.
I love to read about Paige’s love life will they won’t they is quite intriguing and can’t wait to see what happens next. Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for an early copy of this book.
The Silent Suspect by @writernell is a 4.5 start read 🤓 this is the 3rd in the Paige Northwood series & i really enjoyed it very much. The story was chilling and very twisty, I enjoyed getting to know Paige Northwood better and I really like her as a character like the previous two books I was hooked straight away I couldn't put it down, I thought I knew who did it but again I was wrong, i love that Paige wants to be part of the action even though she knows she shouldn't. I do hope though that Paige and Rav Singh get together in the next book as I think it's time and I'd love to know more about DI Forest I want to know more about her..
Paige Northwood, British Sign Language interpreter is called by deaf client after his house is set on fire. When Paige arrives, Lukas is distraught and looking for his wife, Nadia. Later, firefighters find the dead body of Nadia, but it seems she was murdered before the fire was set. Paige and Social Worker, Sasha that Paige is interpreting for begin their own investigation after police do not seem active in tracking down any other suspect now they have Lukas in custody. However there is someone not wanting Paiges interference and she is attacked.
Life is changing fast for Paige as boyfriend Max asked her to move in and her feelings for DS Rav Singh blossom.
I enjoyed this latest instalment and look forward to more of Paiges adventures.
Overall, I enjoyed this novel and will recommend this book as a bookseller. The mystery kept me guessing the whole way through.
When sign language interpreter Paige Northwood gets a call from her client Lukas saying his house is on fire, she rushes to the house to discover that Lukas' wife has died in the fire. What's more shocking is that she was dead before the fire started. Lukas signs that he know who did it but then stays silent afterwards. Is this a sign of his guilt, or his fear? Paige is determined to find out and make sure an innocent man isn't blamed for a crime he didn't commit.
I only recently discovered the Paige Northwood series and have absolutely loved them. I was delighted to get to read this one which is the third in the series. Like the other books, the plot is clever and exciting and all the characters interesting. I loved seeing the usual people back again and hearing how they are doing, and following Paige's personal life is just as exciting as her investigations! The conclusion to the book was shocking and I never would have guessed who was responsible. What I love about these books is that there is always a mystery to be solved, but we always see so many other secrets and shocks during the story. Can't wait for the next one!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy of the book in return for my honest feedback.
This was an interesting book mostly seen from the viewpoint of Paige, a signing translator. I didn’t realise that it was a third book in this series featuring her but nevertheless it was very good as a stand alone novel. I will be looking out for the others by Neil now.
A great twist on a murder mystery. Loved the idea and the suspenseful theme. Would really recommend. Worth reading.
Gripping from the start and although this book is part of a series . it could be read as a stand alone story. Highly recommended
This book 3 in the series. I’ve read 2 out of the 3 and I’m definitely on board with it.
In this latest installment, we have a very suspenseful murder mystery with a lot of moving parts. The various bits and pieces end up blending together well to give us a very satisfying read!
Now, I will say that one particular reveal wasn’t a surprise at all. I think I was supposed to be surprised at what a certain character was up to, but I was mostly surprised that our main character didn’t see it.
As always, the insights into deaf culture and wonderful. I loved reading it and look forward to more books in the future!

Some people choose their books as an automatic purchase depending on the author. I know this because I do it as well. However for some time now Avon had made its way into my shelf. It wasn’t something that I had done consciously but the type of crime thrillers they publish are just so engrossing.
The first book I read that was published by them was by Helen Fields in the DI Callanach series. I still remember devouring the first book and wondering how I had never heard about Helen Fields.
The same thing happened now with Nell Pattison. The Silent Suspect is actually the third book in the Paige Northwood series—a series I hadn’t heard about before. Hence I am starting now to include on the very small list of authors that I consider as an automatic purchase the publisher Avon.
I’m a bit furious at my reading friends because they haven’t actually recommended this to me before. Because let me tell you this is one of the best thriller books I’ve read in a long time.
Thanks Netgalley for allowing me to read this book. Paige is called to a house fire because the family who lives their is deaf. The wife died in the fire which was later ruled a homicide. The most likely suspect was the husband, but Paige did not think he did it. This book kept me guessing.
Part of a set of stories, I really didn't mind that I was reading them out of order - I'm more than happy to now go back through the series to make up for lost time. Engaging storyline with engaging and realistic characters who allow you to see into the frustrations of living with hearing loss and the stereotypes that are drawn from it. 'The plot will keep you guessing as to who is the ultimate bad guy and will keep you guessing through to the final pages.
This book had me from page one, I could not turn the pages fast enough!
A well thought out plot with complex and developed characters. A fast paced thriller with plenty of mystery, suspense, twists and turns.
Although The Silent Patient is the third installment in the Paige Northwood series, I felt that it also worked perfectly as a stand alone novel.
A compelling good read that keeps you invested from start to finish.
I would definitely recommend it.
Thank you NetGalley and Avon Books for the ARC.

The Silent Suspect by @writernell
Publication date - 29th April 2021.
Thank you to @netgalley and @avon_books for my advanced readers copy in exchange for an honest review.
The silent series has became one of my favourites, as soon as I heard this was available I had to request.
It was so good to be back in to Paige’s world, I really enjoy reading about her work as interpreter and the situations she ends up in.
I loved the introduction of the new characters, whilst keeping the consistency of previous books and their characters.
An interesting storyline which kept me guessing, and more importantly, the removal of Max 😂😂 I cannot wait to see how the storyline develops in the next book, especially after that ending! 😱

i was thrilled at the chance of reading this book. I have read this authors previous work and I can honestly say I was really looking forward to this one.
This is one of those books that really does drag you in.
Paige Northwood is a BSL interpreter. (British Sign Laungage) Paige interprets for a lot of different people.
After being contacted and finding out that a house was on fire, Paige attends to help Lukas whose house is on fire, Lukas is deaf so needs Paige to sign for him so he can understand what is going on.
Lukas' wife is still inside the burning building.
It is soon discovered that Lukas' wife Nadia was all ready dead when the fire started and it wasn't the fire that killed her.
Paige believes that Lukas is innocent and will go as far as she can to help him. However not everyone is being straight with Paige. Why are people not telling her the full facts, what are things being kept from her.
Deceipt, family. love, loyalty this book has it all. Full of twist yet a very easy read to fly through. Once started I was so engrosed in the story I couldn't put it down. Loved everything about this book and more. I look forward to reading more from this author and I have no problems what so ever recommending this book.
An absolutely cracker of a book. As a retired Fire Officer I get very picky about how fires are depicted in crime books, but the first chapters in this book contained the best description of a house fire, from a civilian witness point of view, that I’ve ever read.
With the bar set that high the rest of the book had a lot to live up to, but it did it.
I loved the characters, the plot, the setting, and even the bit of romance that runs through it.
A brilliant read.
Plenty of mystery, peril and suspense and a feel of several interwoven and very current storylines with regards to gangs and county lines. As with the other books in this series there is an added depth and interest as some of the main characters are deaf and the signing interpreter is pivotal and highly involved in the storyline and action. I feel this is sensitively written and contributes positively as the characters are strong and very likeable. I didn’t guess who the perpetrator was until near the end of the book and enjoyed the twists and turns along the way. A very good read, I would definitely recommend it.
Amazing!! This is a 3rd of the series and just as good as the first two. I highly recommend this series to any reader that loves to read.
I received an advance copy of, The Silent Suspect, by Nell Pattison. I really liked this book, I have read other books by the same author, and they are just as good.
I have loved reading Nell's previous books, if you haven't read them you really should as they are just as good as this one. All of Nell's books are fast paced and chilling. You never know what is around the corner when reading, especially with this story. It is about Lukas and his wife, when a huge fire starts at their house, Lukas calls Paige who is his interpreter as he is deaf, when she arrives Lukas is fine but his wife is not. They find out that his wife was already dead before the fire started. But who killed her? all fingers point to Lukas but was it really him? or does he know more than he is letting on? Paige goes on a quest to find out what really happened. Will she be in trouble too? A dramatic, tense and on the edge of your seat read. I look forward to Nell's next book.
I enjoyed the book, but feel that it's getting to be a bit worn now. If Paige could become a police officer it would help, but the lucky amateur, especially helping the deaf community, beating the police is becoming wearing. Good story though.
Loving this series, such a different point of view, Paige is going to get in trouble everytime! I hope there will be more, an awaiting a big romance. Another fantastic book
The third in a series, THE SILENT SUSPECT follows BSL interpreter Paige as she becomes embroiled in a homicide case. Having not read the previous books in the series, I do think it works as a stand-alone but I think there are some holes that perhaps were more fleshed out in the other books but were definitely lacking in this one. However, as a whole I enjoyed the story and mystery and found the unique elements involved with dealing with deaf characters to be enlightening.
When Paige is having dinner with her boyfriend one night, a deaf client of hers (Lukas) FaceTimes her and asks her to call the police for him as his house is on fire. She does and immediately goes to his home only to learn that Lukas’s wife Nadia was also inside - but had already been murdered prior to the fire being set. When Lukas is arrested for Nadia’s murder, Paige winds up becoming an amateur sleuth in an attempt to find out what really happened as she believes he is innocent.
While I think this could use some editing (several themes were very repetitive), and the relationship that Paige has with Detective Singh feels very forced and baseless, it was still a fun quick read. I am an avid thriller reader and it was nice to experience something from a different vantage point with different kinds of characters.
This is the third book I have read by this author and again she has done a fabulous job. I love that each book centres around the same main character and that it includes people from the deaf community. Each book gives you an inside view of what life is like for those that are deaf and how they are treated and perceived by others.
Her characters are all well developed and easy to get to know. I find I can picture them without an abundance of physical description which I prefer as I can create the characters as I imagine them.
The relationships in the book are great except this one left me wanting something different.
Overall this is a wonderful murder mystery that keeps you enthralled from beginning to end. There are lots of false leads to keep you wondering who the killer is and Paige continues to get herself into dire situations in each book that only makes you like her more. A plus for the author.
Thank you to Netgalley and Avon Books for allowing me to read this amazing novel.
This was such an interesting concept with a hearing impaired interpreter helping to solve mysteries. It’s very rare that stories delve into this subject matter and it makes for a well written story.
I really enjoyed The Silent Suspect by Nell Pattison!
Pros: Deaf representation, good storyline, twists & turns, and likeable characters. Cons: some confusing storylines, I found out later this was the third book in a series (I thought it was easy to follow even though I missed the first two which was nice), and some spots that could have been shortened
Overall I would recommend and look forward to reading future Pattison books.
3.5 rounded up
Thank you to the author, Avon Books UK and NetGalley for providing a copy to review!
4.5 stars.
This is the third in the Paige Northwood series and I enjoyed it just as much as the first two books.
Paige is working as a sign language interpreter for Sasha, a deaf social worker, when one of her clients calls Paige in a panic when his house is set on fire with his wife inside.
The story goes in lots of directions regarding the fire, murder and then on to drugs. I raced through this book as the story grabbed my attention and I wanted to find out what happened in the end. There were good twists throughout and I would definitely recommend this book and the whole series.
Thank you to Netgalley for an early copy for an honest review.
I have fallen for the series with the opening book and the author continues the excellent writing into the third book. All aspects of the story like the plot, characters, suspense are awesome. The minor glitch is the romantic part in the conclusion which felt immature. One of the best series.
Paige is BSL interpreter. She helps clients that need sign language to understand what is being said to them and what they need to say.
Paige has just arrived at the home of her client when she discovers the house burning. As she tries to understand what has happened she is immersed in a mysterious chain of events.
This book was given to me to read and review by the publisher through Netgalley.
It is very interesting and exciting to read. You also learn a lot about people who are hearing impaired. Their challenges are real.
Great read!
The third instalment of Paige Northwood mystery completes the trilogy perfectly. I read this one at a slower pace compared to the rest but it didn't disappoint and I could pick up exactly where I left off. Nell does a fantastic job at writing a story which is fast paced and interesting, without making the conclusion obvious. I love her books and I hope there's a new one coming up with a new character completely!
My first time reading this author. Enjoyed the character of Paige and the insight into the world of signing. A good pace to the plot; did not guess who did it!
I really enjoyed Silent Night so was pleased to read this to see the continuation in Paige’s story. This was just as enjoyable with some really interesting characters and an intriguing plot involving both Paige’s working life and personal life in some cases with some blurring of the lines between the two. This is quite thought provoking in terms of how things affect the deaf community in ways which we don’t really consider but it’s told in an excellent manner so that the focus is the story. I loved how this ended and really hope to find out how things go for Paige next.
This was a really good book! It kept me guessing, mostly. Excellent character development of most important characters, and just enough on the others to get the point across.
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC of this book.
This book is the third in the series, and each book has had me hooked highly recommend if you enjoy this genre
Loved this book. I have read all the books in the series and they are so well written. I am hooked straight away and this one definitely didn't disappoint. I really hope there's another one in the pipe line. I love the fact that these books are your typical books/stories, im intrigued by the deaf community through these stories and have learnt so much from them already. Keep them coming
Paige Northwood is now working as a freelance sign language interpretor for the police and three days a week assisting a social worker Sasha.
From the word go the reader is thrown straight into the action, Paige gets a call from one of Sasha`s deaf clients, Lukas, telling her his house is on fire.
Paige rushes to the scene, Lukas is frantically looking for his wife Nadia,it is only when the firefighters get the blaze under control that they find her dead body inside the house.
An autopsy proves that she was murdered before the fire was set.
Lukas seems to be the only suspect the police are considering and when his refusal to answer any questions result in the police not actively considering anyone else Paige and Sasha decide to begin their own investigation.
Why won`t Lukas try to clear his name, could he be guilty or is he scared of something or someone?
Then Paige is attacked.
Is she getting to close to discovering the truth?
Even putting herself in potential danger wont stop Paige from finding the true killers identity
This one kept me guessing through all the twists and turns, another great read.
Look forward to more in the Paige Northwood series.
Thanks to Netgalley and Avon Books for the chance to read this as an ARC.
Paige, a British Sign Language interpreter, is a witness to a fire and is unable to work as an interpreter for the police in the related case. The main suspects social worker, Sasha, frequently employs Paige for interpretation services, so Paige had meet Lukas previously. Sasha is convinced Lukas is innocent and convinces Paige to work with her providing interpretation while Sasha investigates.
This is a great character driven series. The Silent Suspect can be read as a standalone, but as the personal relationships continue to develop and come to a head in this novel I would highly recommend beginning with book one in the series. The mystery plot is interesting and the twists and turns in Paige's personal life will be of particular interest to series readers. There is no cliffhanger, but there are some new avenues that have opened up and I am excited to see where the author goes from here.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC. The opinions in this review are honest and my own. #ownvoices #mystey #BSL
Drew me right in took me from my reading chair into the story A book that kept me reading late into the night.A series an author I will be recommending,#netgalley#avonboojsuj
Thank you to Netgalley, Avon Books and Nell Pattison for this ARC in return for my honest review. I've read Silent House and Silent Night, the previous Paige Northwood books through Netgalley. I loved these thrillers told through a unique angle of the deaf community. I've recommended the previous books to so many people and this one will be no different. It's fast becoming my favourite series.
What a different theme for a detective-type story! Most of the main characters in this were deaf, giving a little insight into the world of the non-hearing. I loved seeing how the interpreter worked alongside the social worker. Good story! I look forward to reading more from the author!
I received this ebook from Netgalley in exchange for my honest opinion and review. I have gotten all 3 of the Paige Northwood books from Netgalley. Each one has been better than the last. I love getting to follow Paige through the Deaf community and watch her help solve mysteries. I love how real she is, all her indecisions are so relatable. I hope there’s going to be another one! I need to know what’s going to happen between her and Singh!
I’ve read other books in the series and couldn’t wait for The Silent Suspect. A unique selling point of the series if that they feature crimes committed in or by members of the deaf community and the main character is a sign language interpreter who works for the police, not a premise you come across in fiction every day. The Silent Suspect was just as enjoyable as the other books. I thought it was a bit slower to get into than the other two books, but I soon got caught up in the storyline. Like the other books, the characters really stand out. I really enjoyed this.
BOOK REVIEW
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
'The Silent Suspect' by Nell Pattison is a truly unique whodunnit. It is the third in the series, but I read it as a stand alone without any problems.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
"On a quiet street, one house is burning to the ground.
By the time sign language interpreter Paige Northwood arrives, flames have engulfed her client’s home. Though Lukas is safe, his wife is still inside. But she was dead before the fire started…

Lukas signs to Paige that he knows who killed his wife. But then he goes silent – even when the police charge him with murder.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Is he guilty, or afraid? Only Paige can help him now…"
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The plot was really interesting, made even better by the strong characters. I loved Paige, our lead, and her sister Anna. Their relationship is heart-warming!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The majority of the characters involved are deaf or communicate in British Sign Language (BSL). This is a first for me- but why don't we have more deaf characters in fiction?! Pattison ensured the entire story told perfectly- there's just a lot less speech marks!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and have ordered the first in the series, 'The Silent House' to follow more of Paige Northwood's adventures.

Rosie rates: 4/5
Thank you to @netgalley and @avon_books for the early-release kindle book. 'The Silent Suspect' is due for release in April!

I'D NEVER HEARD OF THIS AUTHOR BEFORE BUT I REALLY ENJOYED THIS STORY. I READ IT IN ABOUT THREE SITTINGS, WHICH IS GREAT, AND IT KEPT ME ENTERTAINED.
Brilliant book. The first Nell Pattison novel I’ve read, and it’s the very first Netgalley ebook that I’ve had approved, and what’s even more incredible is that it’s all based in my hometown, Scunthorpe, which is just crazy.
I genuinely couldn’t put this down. The character of Paige is endearing; you find yourself just wanting her to be happy, and to find the happiness she most definitely deserves.
Nell kept me guessing the entire time with who the killer was; I genuinely didn’t have a clue!
Fast paced and intriguing, I really enjoyed it.
Thank you both to Netgalley & Avon Books for allowing me to read for feedback!
A phone call to Paige is what kickstarts this story into motion! A fire has broken out and a client of Paige's boss calls her for help and that's where the plot unfolds. Emergency services retrieve a body from the house fire and an arrest is made. Against her better judgement, Paige throws herself into helping prove that the person arrested for this crime is innocent. Full of twists throughout, this book is definitely a page turner! I usually figure the out the perpetrator straight away, but with this I had no idea! The characters were well written and the story was easy to read. I thoroughly enjoyed this read and look forward to reading more of Pattisons' work.
Firstly, I really enjoyed this book and found it very gripping. I have not read the previous books in this series and I was not left confused. I think you can definitely read this as a standalone title however there are small references to previous books but luckily they did not have too much relevance to the story.
The plot was well thoughtout and well written. The characters were very complex - I like the first person view of Paige that really added to the story to know her thoughts and feelings.
One small issue I had was the spacing and formatting on some pages displayed rather odd on my kindle however it may just be my device.
I love this series of books and this one is no different. The story is told in the voice of Paige a BSL interpreter. Her character is so well written and believable (if frustrating!) that you really feel like she is talking to you and telling you her own story. The story is based within the deaf community which really gives you a unique insight into the daily challenges and prejudices faced by people with hearing impairments whilst showing you that at the same time their lives are exactly the same as everyone else’s with relationship problems, and money worries. The story is really well paced and had me racing to the end to find out the truth. The story is a really well written and enjoyable and I hope the series continues.
After reading the two previous books I was looking forward to see what this one had to offer. They genuinely just keep getting better and better. Thoroughly gripping read. Highly recommended
Having read the two previous books in this series, I was really looking forward to reading The Silent Suspect. It can be read as a standalone without feeling that you’ve missed something, but I’d definitely recommend you read all three as they’re brilliant!
Paige Northwood was the only hearing person in her family whilst her parents and sister were deaf, so she became fluent in sign language. She works as a freelance interpreter for the deaf, and three days a week for a deaf social worker, but is getting more jobs from the police coming her way, as she’s proved her skills to them.
A woman dies in a house fire but it turns out that she was dead before the fire was set. Her deaf husband is arrested on suspicion of murder but won’t tell the police anything to prove his innocence. The social worker who Paige interprets for is his case worker, so all the strands of the story are intertwined.
A fantastic read that I highly recommend. I read it in less than 24 hours!
Thank you to NetGalley and Avon Books for an advance reader copy in return for an honest review.
This is the second book I have read by this author and it is part of a series with Paige Northwood as a British Sign Language interpreter who occasionally helps the police and works part time for a social worker, Sasha, who is deaf. Although previous relationships are referred to it is easy enough to read as a stand-alone.
As with the previous book I found the storyline and plotting brilliant as the beginning finds Paige being called by Lukas, an individual who is part of Sasha’s caseload, saying his house is on fire and he believes his wife, Nadia, is inside.
There are many twists and turns and Paige’s relationship with Max is high on the agenda as is her behaviour with the policeman, Rav Singh.
Thank you to NetGalley, Avon Books and Nell Pattison for my ARC in return for my honest review.
Good read, recommended.
I really enjoyed this book - I read it in less than 24 hours and really wanted to keep reading
The things I liked : the inclusion of deaf and hard of hearing main characters, the actual ’mystery’, the pace of the story, Anna. Things I didn’t love : Paige - I found her more and more irritating as the book went on constantly putting herself in danger regardless of anyone else, the ending. I don’t like books that end on a cliffhanger of that style. Too obvious.
Another brilliant read from Nell Pattison. I love the angle of this being set within the deaf community but not focusing on it as a disability but merely part of the characters. This has all the intrigue and suspense that you want from a domestic thriller. There's plenty of characters but not too many. I actually really liked the incidental characters that were visited as part of the investigation.
A slight irritation that Paige is so intent on solving the problem that she carries on ignoring advice and puts herself in great danger but still a great book.
I have read the other books in this series and overall I do enjoy them even though I find Paige particularly annoying/frustrating at times. However, the mysteries are "mysterious" and keep you wanting to find out "whodunnit" despite my issues with the character. Give me a series all about DS Singh and I'll be happy!
Thank you #Netgalley, Avon Books UK, and Nell Pattison for allowing me to read an arc of The Silent Suspect. This is another good book in the "Silent" series. I love the characters, but in this one Paige was a little annoying with her romantic woes. It took me some time to get interested in this story-the crime was not as engaging as in the previous two books. However, the book did pick up and the story ended up being great. I recommend reading the books in order, even though they can stand alone. The evolution of the characters and their relationships add a lot.
What a great read. Paige, our protagonist, really suffers in this book. She is ignored, misunderstood, used and taken advantage of and in the end she prevails. I learned a lot about people who are deaf, the trials of every day life and how hard many things are for people who are deaf and those who are part of their lives. Great whodunnit and quite real. A must read!
3.5 Stars
Sign language interpreter Paige Northwood is determined to leave her amateur sleuthing behind. She’s acquired a good job interpreting for Sasha, a profoundly deaf social worker, as well as enjoying time spent with her boyfriend Max. Everything is finally going well…but of course with her luck, that all comes to a screeching halt. While having dinner with Max, he asks her to move in with him at the same time she receives a video chat from one of Sasha’s clients, Lucas, frantically signing for her to call the fire department because his house is engulfed in flames…and his wife Nadia is inside! After the smoke clears, Lucas is arrested for murder and refusing to communicate to the police or anyone else, Sasha is demanding her help in proving his innocence, and Max is wanting an answer. Even though she knows better, Paige just can’t stop herself…she has to find out who killed Nadia and why Lucas is remaining a silent suspect…
In case you missed it, this is the third installment to this series. While the author did a good job in making this a standalone mystery, if you’d not read the other books, the side characters have an ongoing storyline, which could prove to be a little confusing. My biggest disappointment is that I figured out the ending, but perhaps that was the author giving good clues for the reader to follow. Overall, I enjoyed and would recommend to fans of this genre.
**I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own. **
I really love stories with a complex character, and Paige fits the bill perfectly for this!
It was also really interesting that a deaf character was front and center, and had such a vital role. Very good story!
Such a great read... pulled me right in. Loving all the characters and living it with them. Had nne guessing on who was responsible. Great great ending.
Thanks to the author, the publisher and NetGalley for an early release of this book.
I have mixed feelings about this book. If it was a stand alone I probably would have enjoyed it more. However I feel like the books in this series are too much alike. This one ended on another cliff hanger so I suspect there will be a forth one, which I will most likely read because I would like to see how things end up. But had I known the stories were going to be so similar I may not have started reading the series. They are enjoyable though but a little boring to get through the middle parts of the book. Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and author for this book in exchange for an honest review.
The Silent Suspect is the third book in the Paige Northwood series. This book can be read as a standalone without too much catch up.
This book has a unique storyline involving a very intense murder mystery. This was my first book by this author and it captures me from the star. I will definitely be reading more from this author.
Thanks to NetGalley and Avon Books UK for allowing me to read this e-book.
This is yet another awesome book about Paige Northwood and her work with the officers to solve a case. In this one, Paige is not working with the cops because she is actually a witness. The man they have in custody is a deaf man, accused of murdering his wife, but he won't say a thing, even to an interpreter. Once again there was a lot of accurate information about deaf people and how they act and react to stressful situations. It also really shows the prejudice against the deaf when one woman is talking about how poorly the deaf couple speaks. A person who is deaf can speak just as plainly as anyone else, but can still either face discrimination that they don't speak plainly enough or that they can't be deaf if they speak so well. As a deaf person, I have a soft spot in my heart for these books and I will always happily read any book from this author as I've grown to love their writing style and kind approach to disabilities.
Another favorite by a great author. The plot of the story was very well written. The author really draws the reader in as you read. I thought I was interacting like I was character in the story.
Paige Northwood is called to help her employer Sasha - a deaf social worker for whom she is the interpreter - when she is alerted that one of her clients has had his home set on fire, but the situation becomes more sinister when it is learned that his wife was still inside, and she had been murdered before the fire was started. Despite the police insisting that they stay away, Paige and Sasha do what they can to investigate by themselves when the police seem to be coming to the wrong conclusions, but this puts them in harm's way...
This is the third in the series of books following BSL interpreter Paige Northwood as she works in conjunction with the police as they solve crimes involving people from the Deaf community. It's not necessary to have read the previous two to enjoy this book, as although relationships develop between characters during the series, there isn't a particularly complicated background plot there to catch up with, making the books work very well both as a series and as standalone novels. I'm beginning to wonder for how long this series could be prolonged without it being unrealistic at how many murders there were involving deaf victims in Scunthorpe over a relatively short time period, but put that aside for a moment to enjoy this investigation which is pacy and has plenty of twists in the plot to keep you guessing until the end.
With thanks to Netgalley for giving me a copy of this book in return for an honest review.
The silent suspect is book three in the Paige Northwood series. But you can read it as a standalone. As, I have not read the previous two books.
Paige Norwood is a BSL interpreter and works part time with a social worker called Sasha. When she gets a call from one of her clients Lukas Novak that his house is on fire. Paige rushes to the scene of the fire where Lukas has been frantically searching for his wife but unfortunately, they recover the body of Lukas’ wife Nadia. When an autopsy is performed, they find out that Nadia was dead before the fire started.
When Lukas is questioned, he refuses to say anything and is eventually accused of his wife’s murder. Paige doesn’t believe he would do such a thing and she goes out of her way to find out what happened and who wanted Nadia dead.
Thank you, Avon, for a copy of The silent suspect by Neil Patterson. Regardless of the slow start I did enjoy this book. It had a unique storyline and a great plot, and it was an easy read, and I read it quite quickly. The only thing that was bugging me is that what kind of jurisdiction did Paige have to get involved the murder case as she is only and Interpreter? But maybe there is more to it in previous books that I am not aware of. As I haven’t read them, but I will sure now and go investigate the other books in this series. 4 stars from me.
I'm always on the lookout for series that push the boundaries, show different cultures and allow me to experience second hand things I might never experience for myself. I also love narratives that shine a light on areas of society that are often ignored and Nell Pattison's novels fulfill all of that criteria with bells on. Then there's the fact that I recently met Nell at Hull Noir 2021, where I had the undoubted pleasure of chatting with her (and Alex North and Russ Thomas) on the In Cold Blood panel and she's lovely and very entertaining.
So far I've read the first three of the Paige Northwood series and am most definitely hooked and hope their will be more to come from this author.
The books are set in the deaf community which was illuminating for me as I'd never spent time with a deaf person before. Paige Northwood is a British Sign Language interpreter who is the only hearing person in her family (her sister is the only member of her family still alive). As such signing is an equal first language for Paige and because of circumstances I won't reveal (read the books to find out) she has had to give up her university degree and now makes a living as a self employed BSL signer.
Whilst Paige gets on well with DS Rav Singh, she doesn't get on so well with his boss and is often brought to task for pursuing her own instincts. However, her skill as an interpreter makes her indispensable to the police as does her insights into the community.
The novels are a lovely blend of police procedure and private investigation and each novel has it's own insight into different aspects of the deaf community. In Silent House, we become acquainted with issues around deaf children in mainstream education, the deaf culture and the community that holds them together. In Silent Night we learn more about deaf teenagers and deaf children in state care at a school for the deaf. In Silent Suspect we learn about a deaf person accused of murder and the process involved in interviewing him.
These books are gritty and compelling with a touch of romance as well. As the series progresses we learn so much more about the characters and their backstories which I absolutely love. I found myself rooting for a particular outcome for Paige (but again no spoilers here) I found the writing and representation of the deaf community to be authentic (although to be fair I have nothing to compare this too, but it felt real) References to adaptations to home security, interpreting to accommodate the varying need of the individual and the specific culture of the deaf community, felt real to me. The characters were three dimensional - some I disliked intensely, others I loved, a few made me frustrated and all of them were believable.
Paige, who has started working with her friend Sasha as her interpreter, gets a call from one of Sashas clients who asks for help. His house is on fire and he thinks his wife is inside, he needs Paige to call for help. When Paige gets to the house she finds Lukas trying to get in to find his wife Nadia who unfortunately is dead inside..When he gets to the hospital he tells Paige he knows who did this but when he meets the police he refuses to say anything. The police cannot find evidence of anyone else so in the end they arrest him for murder but he still refuses to communicate with them. Paige is convinced he is innocent and is determined to find out the truth.
I really enjoyed this book and liked the characters. There are many twists and turns until the culprit is eventually discovered. Paiges love life is part of the story and I am looking forward to the development of Paige and Ravs relationship
Thank you to Netgalley, Avon and the author for granting me an ARC in exchange for an honest review
Paige the amateur detective is back in this third book of the series.
Paige is a sign interpreter for a deaf social worker (Sasha) and this story is centred around one of her deaf clients that his wrongful arrest and Paige is thrown in to investigating the case.
I love the reference to the deaf community, this is a tangled web of lies and deceit.
Paige is back, back again !!! I’m really enjoying this mystery series, that centers around persons of the deaf community. Paige is fierce,, loyal, smart and undeterred. There’s nothing she wouldn’t do for justice, even if it means putting herself in danger.
.
Paige is now working as a BSL interior for social services and freelances for the police department. One night she receives a call seeking her help, she arrives on scene seeing a house on fire and a dead body being carried out. The husband was arrested on murder charges, but Paige and Sasha , his social worker are convinced of his innocents. They set out on this mission clear his name, but what they stumbled upon is a an history of infidelity, underhand activities and cover-up.
.
There’s no doubt that I love Paige and there a hint of more romance to come in the next novel so I’m super excited for the next book!
When I first requested this book I didn’t realise it was part of a series, but as the mystery aspect is new to this book I found it easy to read as a stand alone. It was an interesting concept and unlike anything I had read before. I did predict some aspects of the novel but this didn’t hinder my reading as I enjoy doing this with books. Overall a good read.
Thanks to NetGalley for providing an eARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
What drew me to this book was the synopsis. The mystery behind Lukas' wife murder and what Lukas knew/didn't know intrigued me, and the novel fulfilled every question I had. Prepare for a very intense ride in a very unique thriller novel.
I really enjoyed this book and found myself totally engrossed. I loved the subject matter and found it a refreshing change.
This is my first book by this author but not the first one of the series. It was easy to read as a stand alone. Interesting characters and a strong but vulnerable heroine. I learnt some things about the deaf community which was an added bonus to the mystery.
I enjoyed this. Author's first book. I thought I would enjoy this one too, but I could not get into it.
Another good read from Nell Pattinson. I really like this series though all the books could be read as standalones.
Thanks to NetGalley and the author for the opportunity to read this book.
I received a copy of this e-arc thanks to NetGalley and Avon Books.
At the start, I was really confused as to who’s perspective the story was being told in. Once some details were revealed, it was easier to follow what was happening.
I was intrigued by the fact that the author had deaf people making up most of the main characters - something which is not common in books.
I loved this book - time flew whilst I read this! I honestly never wanted it to end. I loved the pieces of reveals throughout the book and honestly, I never guessed the whodunnit! That ending though! I can’t believe it just ends with no detail of how it continues! Kinda hope there is a sequel now!
