Description
In this book from the critically acclaimed, multimillion-copy best-selling Little People, BIG DREAMS series, discover the life of Malala Yousafzai, the incredible activist for girls' education and the youngest Nobel Prize laureate.
When Malala was born in Mingora, Pakistan, her father was determined she would have every opportunity that a boy would have. She loved getting an education, but when a hateful regime came to power, girls were no longer allowed to go to school. Malala spoke out in public about this, which made her a target for violence. She was shot in the left side of her head and woke up in a hospital in England. Finally, after long months and many surgeries, Malala recovered, and resolved to become an activist for girls' education. Now a recent Oxford graduate, Malala continues to fight for a world where all girls can learn and lead. This powerful book features stylish and quirky illustrations and extra facts at the back, including a biographical timeline with historical photos and a detailed profile of the activist's life.

I absolutely adore the Little People, Big Dreams series and this book, focusing on Malala Yousafzai did not disappoint. Filled with glorious illustrations, these texts are a fabulous springboard for classroom discussion. I love how they cover such a broad range of famous faces, from scientists to musicians.
The story of Malala Yousafzai is an inspiring and humbling read. It follows the Nobel Peace Prize winner in her fight for the right for education for girls, from her childhood in Pakistan to her work on the global stage. It shows the power of one voice and how Malala refused to let fear and terror silence her. It is an empowering and emotive story, told beautifully for readers of all ages. The illustrations feel Arabic in style, due to colours and patterns and so match the story perfectly.
I will be using this book as part of my Person of the Week work in a Year 5 classroom and think it would be a welcome addition to any school bookshelf. The messages about women’s rights, the value of education and the power of one voice should be shared with all young readers. Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC.
Another great addition to the Little People, BIG DREAMS collection.
This is a concise biography of Malala Yousafzai, an inspiring young woman who stood up to the Taliban after they tried to take away her right to an education. A reminder that you can be a catalyst for change at any age and that girls in the western world should appreciate their education and use it to fight for children who don't have the same rights as them.
These biographies are age appropriate; inspiring and interesting, but not overwhelming. They have bright, beautiful illustrations, striking covers, and look great on a shelf together.
Thank you to Quatro Publishing Group and #NetGalley for an advanced copy.
A crucial story about the importance of standing up for whats right no matter what and continuing to do the same for others no matter what
Perhaps no-one deserves a place in this series more than Malala who championed education for girls as an equal right amid political uncertainty.
While most books reflect on the life of someone who found fame and achieved great influence as an adult, Malala was still a child when her life was challenged by fear and a serious attack on her and her friends just for going to school.
Suffering severe life threatening injuries from being shot she was brought to the U.K. to receive the best possible care and remain safe.
Already known for campaigning for the rights of women to be educated her subsequent recovery spurred her on to speak out and continue the struggle for others girls lacking opportunities to go to school.
Sometimes these books seem bigger than the celebrity they depict but I feel no publication could overshadow the girl at the heart of this story. Her spirit and determination transcends the words; her determination to face down fear and intimidation is truly humbling. This isn’t a figure from a history book but a human being sharing this world within my own lifetime.
Her struggle was first shown within BBC news but now her name is probably known worldwide.
No-one is more a giant among “little people” perhaps no other person maintained their “big dreams” more than Malala when even a bullet couldn’t silence her.
I respect her greatly. Where others would have caved to the nightmares in her world and walked a safer path Malala was not afraid to share a dream of a human right to education. Even after her own degree education was achieved she continues to redress a male centred politic and promote education for all children.
As a child centred book this is an excellent example of what is so good about this series of books that it is a pleasure and a duty to share with the next generation.
I absolutely love the books from this series but I think this one, may be my favourite.
This story follows a little girl in Pakistan called Malala, who wanted to learn to read and write, and go to school, and stood up to the Taliban who didn't want her to do so.
Sadly she was shot and badly injured, and ended up flying to the UK for treatment and no doubt her safety.
She now fights for the rights of other Pakistani girl's everywhere, who may not get the same rights and education that they should.
Great book.
This is another great book to add to the Little People, Big Dreams collection!
I love this series as they are perfect introductions to young people about some of the most famous and influential people from our past and present and are also a reminder about how these people have also changed our history.
This book features Malala who is an inspirational young lady. She went through so much at a young age and came out fighting and even more determined - she is to be commended and the book is a lovely dedication to her for younger children!
5 stars from me for this one, very highly recommended and can't wait for my daughter to get involved in the series and for me this book is a much for any children's library!!
Another great addition to the series! My cubs love these books and often want to learn more about the people discussed. Perfect for any child's library and for classroom use!
I am a big fan of the little people, big dreams' series and always look forward to new additions. This is no exception. It tells of the brave and determined Malala Yousafzai, who campaigns for every child's right to an education.
I really like that these books are accessible for younger children and also have additional information in a biography at the back. Perfect for parents and teachers to share with younger readers.
I really like the vibrancy of the illustrations in this one.
My daughter and I loved this series and this latest addition was no exception. We know Malala’s story well, having read many different iterations of it. We were so pleased with this retelling and felt it was the perfect first book for a young child to engage with, as a good introduction to her hard but inspiring story. It was simple and clear without skipping over important details. The illustrations were simply gorgeous and helped to tell the story. We would highly recommend this book and plan to read it again and again.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
I remember the story of Malala so I’m delighted to have the chance to read this.
Simple, yet brilliant book teaching young children to fight for what they believe in. My 9 year old really enjoyed this one.
Malala Yousafzai is famous around the world. She is the young girl from Pakistan who stood up to the men with the guns and spoke out for what she believed in. In this fantastic addition to the Little People, Big Dreams series, her incredible life and inspirational story is retold in a picture book which is accessible to younger readers.
As a young girl, Malala looked forward to being old enough to go to school; to learn, to grow and to discover what she was good at. But a group of people called the Taliban had very different ideas about what people and children should be allowed to do and the rules were especially harsh for females. It seemed impossible to defeat the Taliban - they had guns and bombs. But Malala had something more important, she had her voice and her voice needed to be heard…
The Taliban were terrified of Malala and her voice and took drastic action, shooting her and a friend on their way home from school. Luckily, Malala survived and refused to be silenced. She continued to speak for what she believed in and she became an icon around the world. She went on to set up a foundation to help improve the lives and education of children and is the youngest person to ever receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
Malala’s story is incredible. It shows the determination, resolve and courage of one young girl who hoped for a better world and found the strength and inner-belief to use her voice to take action. It is one of the best examples of the phrase, ‘Nothing happens unless somebody says something’.
Delightfully illustrated with bright and bold artwork and with a story told in short and simple sentences, this is an inspirational read that proves actions and words can change the world. At the back of the the book there is a short overview of her life so far which includes key facts and dates and a historical timeline featuring photographs.
Everyone has the power to change the world and we all need to find the strength of Malala to speak up for what we believe in.
Recommended for 5+.
Due for publication on 2nd March 2021. With thanks to Netgalley and Frances Lincoln Publishers for the ARC.
This is another gorgeous addition this series. This is a very inspirational story accompanied with beautiful vibrant illustrations. Can't wait to see who gets immortalised next.
A great addition to the Little People, Big Dreams collection of stories.
This book tells the story of Malala Yousafzai in an age appropriate, digestible way that is easy for children to access without being overwhelming.
The beautiful illustrations add to the beauty of the story.
The story of Malala and her inspiring bravery is the perfect addition to the Little People, Big Dreams series. The description of what happened to Malala and the regime she lived under is pitched perfectly for children. The illustrations are stunning as usual. This is a must-have for any child’s bookshelf and fans of the series already will love this addition.
I love this series of books.
They give enough information about the person for children to understand and learn and not make it feel like it is learning.
Another great book for the series, I always look forward to see who will be given the little people big dreams ‘bookover’
Thanks Netgalley for this arc.
The Little People, Big Dreams series always produces interesting stories of fascinating people told in a way that makes them accessible to children and this title is no exception.
The story of Malala is well known but this book is written in a way that makes it appealing to younger readers. The illustrations and short bursts of text make it an attractive book that children will be keen to pick off the bookshelf.
A copy of this book was provided by the publishers via Net Galley in return for an honest review.
Ive been a Malala fan for a long time. Seeing her story in this series was very good. She is very inspiring.
The book was beautiful. Loved the illustration and narrative.
Everyone knows the harrowing nature of Malala's story, but Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara manages to tell her story to little ones in simplistic, easy to understand terms which explain the seriousness of the Taliban - and their control in Malala's home country - without being overly frightening.
I read this with my little girl (who is nearly three), and although she was more interested in pointing out the beautiful floral patterns laced throughout this story, she understood the gravity of the situation Malala found herself in. She managed to completely break my heart when she stuck her bottom lip out, pointed at the image of Malala in her hospital bed and said, "Boo boo".
If you are a parent who is happy to have conversations with your little ones about the darker aspects of humanity, this is a Little People, BIG DREAMS book which I would highly recommend. However, if you're just looking for a fun and informative story about a famous person from history, I would suggest picking up one of the other Little People, BIG DREAMS titles instead. Dolly Parton is a huge favourite in our household!
This is such an amazing book for adults and children!
Malala's story is told through the most beautiful and emotive illustrations. The language is accesible and the narrative is easy to follow and this book sits really well in the Little People, Big Dreams series.
We are always looking to expand our bookshelves and welcome diverse role models into the curriculum from the youngest possible age. This is a beautiful addition to the Little People, Big Dreams series allows parents and educators to share these wonderful role models with very young children in an engaging but informative way. Malala Yousafzai is a role model who should be shared with young children everywhere, because she is the embodiment of determination, resilience, and equality. The colours in the illustrations are bright and engaging and really add to the culture backdrop of the book. As this series of books always does, this book breaks down the life story of the role model in a simple and child-friendly way, but without dumbing down the information. Certainly a book which deserves to be on every classroom bookshelf.
The newest addition to the "Little People, BIG DREAMS" collection features the story of Malala Yousafzai, the youngest Nobel Prize winner. The book portrays her upbringing, the shooting she's been injured in, and everything she was able to achieve due to the publicity it brought. She took advantage of the media attention to advocate for peace and putting an end to violence in the Middle East.
I simply love these little books. They are beautifully designed and can inspire many young people and encourage them to follow their dreams.
Girls can have big dreams too!
I was so impressed by the story Of Malala, the youngest person ever to receive the Nobel Peace Prize! I definitely didn't know her entire story, where she grew up, why she couldn't get an education and the fact that she got shot going back from school for speaking up!
Overall, this book is a book of bravery and hope. It shows us that not only do girls deserve the same rights and treatment but that we as women can move mountains when we put our minds to it. It also gives us insight into the situation in other countries and helps us educate our little ones and spread awareness of the things that happen around the world to this day.
Beautiful illustrations as always, bright and lovely!
Simply stunning artwork, I adore everyone of these books and think they are such inspirational reading to young minds, a great way of introducing important people to little ones, the greatness they achieve and how they can achieve anything they want to. Pure inspiration for future inspiring minds.
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a free copy for an honest opinion
Loved this book, what a journey she had and what an amazing person. I read this with my daughter and she was literally amazed at what she had done.
Another great book from this series and a great way of kids learning about the amazing things people have done
This is a beautifully illustrated children's book about a girl from Pakistan called Malala Yousafzai, who became an activist after being oppressed as a child by the Taliban. She stood up for children's rights to go to school and get an education and later in life, she received the nobel peace prize for her inspiring work. I enjoyed reading this book and I look forward to reading more of the Little People, Big Dreams books.
