Description

No one knows why everyone calls this wild child Meow, because Meow is definitely not a cat. Cats lick their butts. In this silly kids’ book about being unique, Meow is baffled by the other kids always doing the same things. Follow along as Meow’s quest to lead the kids out of boredom goes a little bananas.

Too many stories about inclusion or diversity start off with bullying or exclusion, that the character then has to overcome. Lots of progressive books are preachy or drill too hard on “the lesson.” Still other stories miss the boat completely and perpetuate stereotypes in the name of being funny.

Meow Is Not a Cat does none of those things. Instead:

* the message is always positive

* there’s never any bullying

* there are no unkind words

* and there’s no preaching

It’s simply a wacky story that refuses to perpetuate tired, old stereotypes. Meow is never once gendered in the book. Any kid can see themselves in Meow!

A Note From the Publisher

About the Author

Kelly is the creator of her own uniquely shaped family. She writes silly, funny books for kids. Feminism, inclusion, and potty humor are her jam. She believes kids are fabulously weird, and their stories should be too!

Kelly’s made a game of teaching her kids how to spot bad old ideas, which has led to a family list of children's books which support progressive values. Some favorites are Julian is a Mermaid, Boys Wear Pink and, of course, Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls.

Kelly’s children’s stories are perfect to read aloud to your little humans, or to have your older kids read to you (hey, let them flex those new reading skills!). Either way, you’ll enjoy the giggles.

A great book for any child of any age! I love that this story was gender-neutral and focused on having the confidence to be your own person. I read this to my niece and by the time I was halfway through, all 3 of them had come over to listen to the story.

This is a cute story about a kid called Meow who does not understand why all the kids In His class all do the same thing. After reading this children’s book I liked the message that this book delivers. It’s ok to be different sometimes and to question things

I read Meow Is Not a Cat to my 4 year old son and we both loved it. It tells the story of a child called Meow who is an individual and does not conform like the other children. I thought this was a lovely message for children to learn - just be yourself.

Thank you to NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for my ARC.

This is a cute book about a kid who pretends to be a cat. I think kids of all ages will like this because every kid has pretended to be an animal at one point in time.

Charming story about a child who thinks in a unique way. Their name is Meow though they are not a cat. I appreciate the cat offering commentary throughout the story. On a visit to the zoo, the other kids and teacher come to appreciate how Meow thinks and plans. Brightly colored illustrations and a fun read to open dialogue on everyone's special gifts.

This was such a cute picture book. Meow is a toddler whose imagination runs high and doesn't like to follow the norm. I loved the illustrations and the cat is so cute with its quirky dialogues! Very Quick read!
