The Rules of a Little Boss: A Book of Self-love is written by eighth-grader Haelee P. Moone, who wants to encourage much younger kids to appreciate and stand up for themselves. The wonderful illustrations by artist Arsalan are bright and show the points Haelee is making. Haelee wants young kids to experiment with their inner beauty, to wear clothes that make them happy, not to make others feel bad, to deal with haters, not to succumb to peer pressure, not to change for others, to treat others well, and to use something she calls ""vibe sessions"" to discover who they really are. The drawings are of boys and girls, second-graders perhaps, who might be experiencing the difficulties of growing up. In her introduction, Haelee promises to be with them all the way.
Also in her introduction, Haelee announces that The Rules of a Little Boss (whom I assume is herself) will take young readers one step toward self-esteem if these simple rules are followed. She tells her readers that they are gorgeous and that they shine everywhere they go. The colors are rich and deep and the drawings of the kids vary in gender and appearance. It's clear that Haelee wants to help kids value themselves, no matter what. The vocabulary is useful for teaching kids: gorgeous, apologize, experiment, appropriately, tiara, motivation, affirmations, and mentor are some examples. The Rules of a Little Boss: A Book of Self-Love by Haelee P. Moone will be of great value for youngsters struggling with issues of self-esteem. We look forward to more works by the talented Miss Moone and the excellent artist Arsalan.

It has all of those messages that I could hear my mom telling. I think that it's really important that kids see that in a book because we have to realize that not everyone's parents share those lessons. I love how this book is really inclusive.
