Description
A German Shepherd, a Pomeranian, and a Bulldog are just some of the dogs included in this book. With 15 fun drawing projects, I Can Draw: Dogs & Puppies is a collection of some of kids’ most loved dogs. All of the drawings are created with simple shapes that are easy for young artists to make, and the cute illustrations are appealing and approachable to young ones.
The book begins with an introduction to drawing materials and instructions on how to use the book, and then it jumps right into the drawing projects. For a cute puppy:
- Kids start with a square, add a line, a curved line, and some more straight and curved lines. They are encouraged to keep following along with each step.
- As they make their way through the multiple steps, all the new pencil marks to make are shown in a different color so it’s easy to know what to draw next.
- Once they near the end of the project, these young artists will start to see a drawing of a baby puppy appear on their paper, and all they need to do now is add some color.
Each title in the I Can Draw series features easy step-by-step drawing lessons for little artists. Starting with basic shapes, such as a square, a rectangle, a triangle, and a circle, children will discover how to draw a range of subjects. The books in the I Can Draw series provides the perfect introduction to drawing for budding artists.

The simple instructions, and geometric shapes help beginners learn to sketch a wide variety of dogs. This is a short, visual, instruction book for drawing and will be very popular with anyone who likes art and creativity.
I appreciated that the directions didn't become overly complex and that the end result would still be a recognizable, yet non-cartoony dog.
This will appeal to beginners of all ages.
Shh, don't tell anyone but I spent a good chunk of my day trying out the directions and had a blast. I even ventured into creating my own dog, whose breed wasn't illustrated. I was able to pull various characteristics from the dogs pictured, however, to make a very representative drawing of my own dog. So, whether you're a kid or grown-up-kid, I think you'll enjoy this book.
The directions are simple and easy to follow and the use of different colors for different steps makes them that much easier to follow. All you really need to draw is paper and pencil, though an eraser and colors add to the fun. In the process, if your child is unfamiliar with the names of figures like triangles, this can aid in their learning of those basic terms. Bottom line, this book should be a fun diversion for any child who loves to draw and/or dogs. I know it was a blast for this grown-up-kid.
Thank you #NetGallery and #QuartoPublishingGroup - #WalterFoster and author/artist #EmilyFellah for allowing me to enjoy being a kid again!
Emily Fellah does it again.
In another very cute and easy to follow children’s book dedicated to introduction to drawing, she opens the door to young and new learners and with simple step by step instructions, enables them to create adorable drawings.
Both children and adults will enjoy this “Dogs and Puppies” volume.
What a fabulous how to book for drawing. I have zero talent when it comes to drawing but my daughter is a whiz at it, and she loves dogs, so I requested this book to improve my skills in order that we can draw together. Very straightforward format, colorful illustrations and easy to follow steps. Thank you to Walter Foster Publishing and The Quarto Group for the advanced reader copy of this very snazzy book by Emily Fellah.
Dog's & Puppies is a short little book that shows children how to draw 15 different breeds of dog using simple shapes and lines to get the basic outline down, then color and fill in. This is part of the I Can Draw! series, and they remind me of the old Ed Emberly techniques.
This is a fantastic introduction to art, for young artists. The book shows easy to read, step by step lessons, which introduce the reader to art tools, and a description of how to use basic shapes, such as triangle, circle, square and rectangle, in order to draw dogs and puppies easily. My daughter has had a lot of fun today drawing a few dogs from the book. She really loves this series of books, and she gets really excited every time I show her a new book from the series. She has been busy most days, drawing lots of animals from all five of the books that we have so far! Her favourite animals to draw from this series are cats and bunnies. She really likes the step by step, numbered illustrations in the book, as they really help her to concentrate, and she learns a lot from them. I highly recommend all of the books from this series of art books.
Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book is so fun! I also have the cats and kittens version but I think I like this one even more because there are several different recognizable breeds you can draw and there is a little more detail in the drawings. They are still simple enough for a novice drawer though, and really fun quick little drawing projects that you can do when you have a spare few minutes. My toddler got excited watching me draw. Can’t wait to try more of these! Thank you to Emily Fellah, Quarto, and NetGalley for the opportunity to review this e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
Dogs & Puppies is a wonderful step by step drawing tutorial book primarily aimed at younger children. Each lesson provides clear and simple progressive steps all based around simple shapes (e.g. circle, triangle, rectangle etc.). Children will be delighted with the dog drawings they can produce and will hopefully be inspired to design some of their own. A wonderful rainy day book, or gift book for a young child.
I Can Draw! Dogs & Puppies is a delightfully useful line drawing activity book for youngsters. Due out 8th Feb 2022 from Quarto on their Walter Foster Jr imprint, it's 32 pages and will be available in paperback format.
The drawings are encouragingly simple and the step by step tutorials are accessible and easy to follow and replicate. Each of the 15 drawings has a tutorial series with steps to follow and some simple tips for adding color. Some of the dogs and puppies included are popular and well known like the Lhasa Apso, Cairn Terrier, and Pomeranian. They're all cute and recognizable and it will be easy for anyone to follow. This book is part of a series with lots of how-to books with similar formats.
Great selection for a gift for a young artist, perhaps with some added sketch pads and pencils. This would also make a superlative classroom or library book. I would also recommend this book to babysitters, grandparents, parents, and basically anyone who spends a fair bit of time with small kids in order to up their 'draw with me' game. I really enjoyed this (and managed to recreate a credible bulldog myself).
Five stars. This is a fun activity book and will provide hours of quiet play.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
This book taught me how to draw dogs. When I started out, I thought that this would end up looking like poorly drawn circles squares, triangles, etc. by some lucky stroke it ended up looking like a dog! It was so much fun learning to draw all the different dogs. I have a Pomeranian and I learned how to draw her. It’s not hard to learn to draw due to the simple instructions and the clear illustrations shown. It’s a book that anyone of any age can learn to draw dogs of different breeds. It’s easy and fun to do.
This is a good, simple drawing book for kids. Nothing too fancy, but it gives somewhere to start. My full review appears on Weekend Notes.
When I saw that I can Draw Dogs and Puppies featured a bulldog, I knew I needed to review it!
The design of the book is bright with lovely clear line drawings and begins with the instructions on how to best use the book.
Each two page spread then takes you step by step on how to draw each puppy. with an illustration that is added to during each step. Additional text instructions are used where needed, but the instructions are 90% visual which makes this book perfect for all ages.
This book would be perfect for the little budding artists in your life.
This step-by-step the perfect book for classroom directed drawings and beginners alike. Included are instructions for 15 dogs and puppies using simple shapes and easy-to-follow guidelines. Helpful hints on what shades will be placed where create the finishing touches on the drawings.
Thank you to Emily Fellah, the publisher, and NetGalley for this advanced readers copy in exchange for my honest review.
My 8-year-old daughter loves to draw and is the proud owner of several kids Learn to Draw books. She loves drawing everything from animals to food to stationary objects so I knew when I saw Dogs & Puppies I had to request it for her. We sat down this weekend and she loved going through all the options of dogs for her to practice drawing. We really liked how there was a step-by-step guide how to draw each animal so it wasn't confusing. I am not a good drawer by any stretch of the imagination, but even I was able to follow along with the instructions and create something of my own. I definitely recommend this book as a fun guide for kids to learn how to draw dogs and puppies!
Fun, easy to follow drawing book for beginners. I have a child that is just starting to get into art and this is exactly what we have been looking for. We are planning to try all versions of this drawing series.
Really cute book on drawing dogs and puppies. It is only a small book of 30 pages, but it certainly has a lot of information and projects to learn from.
Great for kids of all ages, and adults can also get some fun out of this book.
