Fantastic , I can’t wait to start baking all of these recipes, this is a wonderful book chock full of drool worthy recipes, written in plain English, easy to follow and understand , absolutely recommended for those with a sweet tooth
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free copy to read and review in return for an honest opinion
Great book of cookie, brownie, and bar recipes from the author of the Crazy for Crust blog. The book starts with info on ingredients, baking tips, and cookie rules for success.
Recipes are in chapters on Cookie Jar Favorites; Brownies; Blondies and Bars; Cookie Cakes, Skillet Bakes, and Cups; Crazy Cookies; Stuffed and Sandwiched; No-Bake; and a final chapter with three dog treat recipes.
I loved that each recipe had full color photos to go with it. There are a variety of flavors represented. The recipes clearly list yield, prep time, chill time (if applicable), and bake time. Many of the recipes should be able to be completed in around an hour or less, so you can have a scratch made dessert treat soon.
I am a sucker for a cookbook, so a book full of chocolatey goodness? There’s literally nothing better. Dorothy Kern brought her personal stories and so much creativity to this book full of desserts. It is busting with must-try recipes, and the reader can see mouthwatering pictures of every pastry, a detail that I love. I also appreciate Kern including both metric and US standard directives in her ingredient list - it definitely makes the cookbook more accessible to dessert lovers everywhere.
Here are a few I’m especially excited to try out in the kitchen:
-Death by chocolate brownies
-Cinnamon blondies
-Chocolate chip cookie dough bars
-Caramel crunch bars
This book is a staple in any kitchen, and I look forward to enjoying these timeless, inventive recipes for years to come!
(Thank you Netgalley for an eARC - will definitely buying this one for my shelf once it’s out in print!)
Yum! This cookbook is perfect for bakers of all levels and the enticing photos will have you grabbing your spatulas and pulling out the butter in no time.
I love to bake, especially with my tween daughter. It’s such a great bonding activity at an age where she would prefer to be with her friends (what child says no to a batch of cookies?). Bonus- it also helps teach life skills! This is a great cookbook for a mother/daughter team. There are several recipes basic enough to start out with and the recipes are easy to follow. Also, did I mention the photos? I love that there’s a photo of every single recipe.
Recipes I can’t wait to bake from this cookbook include: Toffee Chippers, Mint Chip Brownies, White Chocolate Lemonies, Orange Dream cookies, Giant Stuffed Nutella cookies and come next Christmas Chocolate Candy Cane Cookies… and so many more.
Dorothy Kern is a baking genius who has put her heart into this cookbook. I enjoyed reading her memories associated with each recipe, it was an extra sweet touch.
Thank you NetGalley and Quarto Publishing group- Harvard Common Press for the advanced copy, I may just have to own a physical copy of this one once it hits the shelves.
Pros: I knew this book was for me as soon as I saw the cover. I love to bake, and cookies, brownies, and bars are my go to desserts. I'm always looking for new recipes to add into the rotation, and after reading this book there are so many recipes I want to try. Immediately added to my "to bake" list were the chocolate chip cookies, the peanut butter oatmeal chocolate chip cookies, the chocolate chip snowball cookies, the tuxedo cookies, the Oreo truffle brownies, the peanut butter stuffed brownies, the death by chocolate brownies, the triple decker cookie bars, the chocolate chip shortbread bars, the skillet cookies . . . really all of the recipes with chocolate in them! These recipes are very accessible to new bakers, and I appreciate that the ingredients are listed in cups and grams. I also appreciate that each recipe has a photo--this is so helpful when trying a new recipe.
An added bonus: Although I don't have a dog, I thought it was so thoughtful that there was a chapter for dog biscuits!
Cons: None that I can think of, except I wish I had been eating one of these cookies or bars while reading the book!
Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Harvard Common Press for the opportunity to read this book!
A truly inspirational cookbook, bursting at the seams with wonderful sounding recipes. I am always on the look out for baked treats, baking as I do, for village fundraising events, and there are plenty to choose from here, especially brownies and bars which always sell so well as buyers can have a choice to mix up their purchases. Easy to follow and clear recipes with a stunning colour photo to accompany each one which only adds to the inspiration. It's perfect, being UK based, that the measurements are not just in bewildering cups. I will be trying many recipes from this book in the near future especially so from the No Bake section as my kitchen is currently undergoing a refit and once the work is finished.
Interesting inclusion of a chapter for Dog Treats, I don't actually have a dog myself, but many in my village do with dog treats to hand. I hope this book gets published this side of the Atlantic as, for one, would certainly buy it. especially as when cooking I much prefer to work from a real book not via my computer.
I loved this book! There were such a large variety of delicious cookie, brownie, bar, and cookie cake recipes to bake. Everyone in my family loved the cookies I made from this book! My dogs even got to join in the cookie fun since there was a section for dog friendly cookies at the end. My personal favorites were the sprinkle cookies and the cookies & cream red velvet. Each recipe was accompanied by beautiful pictures of the finished product and had tips to help or give a variation of the recipe. I loved that at the end of each recipe it also told you how long the cookies were good for both on the shelf and in the freezer. I also appreciated that while these were all typically smaller batches of cookies that the author put in the beginning that the recipes were easily doubled if more cookies were needed.
Thank you to @netgalley and @harvardcommon for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Will be posting review to ig account on publishing day.
Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Harvard Common Press for an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own.
I refuse to review cookbooks until I have made at least 1 item from the book, and in this case, I have already made 3 with a plan to make an additional 2 later this week. This book wasn't kidding with the title saying that the recipes are super fast and made from scratch, because I was able to make two items (chocolate chip cookies & no-bake chocolate chip cookie dough bites) in about an hour. Mind you, they both needed to chill for at least an hour, so I came back later in the evening to bake all of the cookies. I also made the no-bake sugar cookie bites with two friends, and we were able to complete that (with chilling) in about an hour as well.
These recipes are pretty easy to read and use, which is awesome when so many of the recipes look so good. One of my friends who was baking with me is vegan, and so she brought vegan substitutes for some of the ingredients - not only did it still work but they tasted delicious! My biggest complaint with these recipes is that almost all of them require the dough to chill for an extended period of time. While this isn't a huge deal, it does cause some time issues if you don't pre-plan for an additional hour+ into your baking time. It is nice that there are recommendations on how to cook flour and store both the dough & cooked sweets, plus tips on how long it is good for. There are a couple dog treat recipes in the book and that is my next project - I can't wait! 5/5
THIS BOOK IS DELICIOUSLY AMAZING!
From the recipes to the design of the pages, this book is a masterpiece. The recipes are very easy to follow and delicious (I’ve tried a few and my family thought I was a pro baker!!). I love the small intro explaining the story behind the recipe and I love how diverse they are, there’s a recipe for everyone. I will definetly buy this book because I love its aesthetic and I will actually use it a lot.
I am cookbook lover! The cover of this one grabbed my attention, and I knew I had to read it.
The photos made the were fantastic. The recipes in this book are easy to follow. The author did a great job explaining everything with each recipe, so you have a perfect outcome every time.
I truly can not pick out a favorite from all the books has to offer. I must have said to my husband a dozen time – Hey listen to this one! as I read him a recipe. There are going to be a lot of comments from friends and family when I bring these delicious goodies to gatherings!
I was so thrilled to see the section with recipes for dog treats. Our Grandpups are going to be so happy when I bake them these treats.
Thank you NetGalley, Dorothy Kern and Quarto Publishing Group for the ARC of Crazy for Cookies, Brownies, and Bars. This is my personal review
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I dare anyone to open this cookbook and not want to bake every single thing in it! 😂 As someone who loves to bake, I was super excited to get my hands on this cookbook. It is conveniently dived into eight chapters (nine if you count the intro)... Cookie Jar Favorites, Brownies, Blondies and Bars, Cookie Cakes, Skillet Bakes, and Cups, Crazy Cookies, Stuffed and Sandwiched, No Oven, No Problem: No-Bake Cookies and Bars, and For Man’s Best Friend: Dog Cookies for Your BFF. Each of those chapters contain several easy (and delicious) to follow recipes.
This book also hits a 10 out of 10 on the visually pleasing scale with bright colorful photos accompanying every recipe. Along with tips and tricks in colorful eye-catching boxes. Unfortunately, I have only gotten around to trying a couple of the recipes, but "Mochadoodles" is a must try, as are the "Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Bars"
I honestly can't recommend this one enough!

This delectable new cookbook is a must-have for dessert enthusiasts! 85 recipes for any cookie, brownie, or bar you can imagine, as well as some new varieties you didn’t know you needed in your life. Even better – every single recipe has a drool-worthy photo to go along with it! There are also helpful sections on key ingredients, and tools and tips for successful baking, which are perfect for a novice but also a great reminder for seasoned bakers.
This cookbook is well-organized, starting with the classic cookie jar favorites, moving on to brownies, bars, no-bakes, and finishing up with some unique original recipes. There are even recipes for dog cookies so you can bake a treat for your furry best friend! As an experienced baker, I’m always on the hunt for fun new recipes, so the creative Crazy Cookies section had me really excited – Mochadoodles, Lime in the Coconut cookies, and Cranberry Pistachio Shortbread, just to name a few. And I know that my kids (and any kids at heart) are sure to love the Fruity Pebbles cookies.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group – Harvard Common Press for providing me an advance copy of this cookbook in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you NetGalley for giving me an ARC of this one!
I do bake at home, and cookies are my favorite thing to make. I'm glad I came across this book. There are a lot of recipes that are easy to follow, with tips and tricks that are helpful even when you're just starting to bake. The author also included no-bake recipes and even treats for furbabies! I like that most of the required ingredients are the ones that you can easily grab on your pantry or in the grocery. Although I haven't tried any of them, I'm sure they're really good because the photos inside the book look amazing. Overall, this is a great book for all sweet lovers like myself.
This is everything one could ask for in a cookie cookbook! There's a generous number of recipes of a truly great variety--cookies, bars, cookie cakes, no-bakes, and even dog cookies! Each recipe includes clear ingredient lists (including weights, yay!) and instructions along with helpful tips. Additionally, there is a large, detailed, gorgeous photo of the finished product for each recipe, along with detail shots as needed.
There are so many things in here I want to try. The guide at the beginning, covering ingredients, tools, and techniques, is very useful for people just getting started baking. This is very, very giftable too--anyone would be delighted to get this beautiful, tempting cookbook!
Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review!
5 Drool worthy Stars!! I can’t wait to try out some of these recipes! This book has tons of photos, each one looking all delicious-like. Tips for every recipe, which there are more than 85 and each recipe has a photo of the finished product. Before even getting to the recipes, the author walks you through what tools and ingredients that are used most often. I’ve been getting into baking more and more lately and have a handful of recipes I can’t wait to try. Cookies, brownies, blondies, bars, cookie cake, no-bake, even dog cookies! Great gift idea for the aspiring home baker in your life. Definitely recommended!
*I received this at no charge & I voluntarily left this review.*
What a fantastic book! Definitely a must have in every cook's library. The title clearly tells you exactly what the book is about. The book is filled with beautiful pictures of every recipe to truly lure the reader in and entice you to want to try every recipe in the book. All of the easy to follow recipes come with very helpful tips. The variety and uniqueness of recipes make this book exciting to read. In addition to regular cookies and brownies are crazy cookies (so fun!), stuffed cookies, skillet cookies, and cookies for man's best friend. Also included are sections describing key ingredients and baking tools. Plus pro tips for successful baking and storing and freezing. This book truly has a recipe to please everyone and will impress even the most picky eater. I would highly recommend this book to bakers of every skill level.
This cookbook is so fun! It would great to give to a hostess or for a birthday. The pages are filled with so many yummy recipes! The chocolate chip cookies are AMAZING!!
DELICIOUS! And simple. The best way to go. Dessert in a bar form? Count me in! Nothing is better than a simple dessert. I could read cookbooks like a novel any day!
Lots of good recipes that provides exactly what is says. I am partial to blondies so I'm especially excited they have a whole chapter dedicated to them.
Crazy for Cookies , Brownies and Bars is the ultimate reference in how to bake any and every type of cookie you can imagine. Across eight different chapters , there is a cookie for everyone and even a chapter dedicated to cookies you can bake for dog.
The book eases you in with a list of equipment you will need and the seven rules of cookie baking . The following chapters recipes for the classic favourites as well as mouthwatering new recipes to try out. I really liked that there were blondies which didn’t feature chocolate in the recipe, I have never seen that anywhere else. I am excited to try the No bake range of cookies too.
This cookbook belongs in every kitchen. Not only will you be spoilt for choice, it’s a cookbook you will refer to time and time again.
Thank you to the author, publisher and Netgalley for the advanced copy of the book in exchange for an honest opinion.
Crazy for Cookies, Brownies, and Bars is a well curated and fun dessert cookbook with recipes developed by Dorothy Kern. Due out 1st Feb 2022 from Quarto on their Harvard Common Press imprint, it's 208 pages and will be available in hardcover and ebook formats.
The layout is appealing and unfussy - both easy to understand and accessible. The introduction includes a simple pantry list along with a good basic equipment list for stocking a working home kitchen. The recipes are arranged by category: cookie jar cookies, brownies, blondies & bars, cookie cakes & skillet bakes, crazy (exotic) cookies, sandwich and stuffed cookies, no bake, and even some pet approved cookies. I didn't feel any of them were unachievable in my very basic home kitchen and all the recipes we tried were delicious. Nearly all the recipes do contain some combination of butter, eggs, and milk, so they're not vegan as written and will take some experimentation to make them so.
Ingredient measurements are supplied in American measurements with standard (metric) in parentheses (yayyy!). Nutritional information not included, and it's probably a good thing - a lot of these recipes are decadent and so delicious. Extra tips or recipe alternatives are listed in sidebars with the recipes. The recipes themselves are fairly straightforward and are made with easily sourced ingredients. Many are very simple, none of them are overly complex. The book does include an index.
The photography is clear and abundant; almost all of the recipes are illustrated, and the photographs which are included are crisp and well done. Serving suggestions are attractive and appropriate.
This is a large collection of recipes and even allowing for the fact that some of them are similar to others in the same category, this will keep cookie fans going for ages. These range from simple "everyday" recipes to fancier desserts for social gatherings, parties, and special occasions. We tried several and all of them were tasty and well written.
We're definitely going to try more of these. Well written book, tasty treats.
Four and a half stars. This is a solid recipe book which will be used. Many of these recipes are destined to become family favorites and regulars.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
I’ll admit, I love baked goods. To the point where as a kid, my grandparents would always make extra of my favorite part of any holiday meal - rolls. I bake bread a few times a week and my teens regularly bake cookies, and they all get eaten (happily eaten).
Looking through this cookbook, I found sooo many recipes I can’t wait to try. I personally thought that the majority of the recipes were something I’d definitely like to try, my teens - likewise.
There are quite a few that we now have plans to bake.
* Happy happy vegan note - the vast majority of these recipes are super easily veganized!
All the stars for this beautifully photographed drool worthy baking book full of cookies, bars, blondies, no bakes, cakes, even cookies for our pups! There are so many delicious recipes to bake for all your loved ones. From Bacon Caramel Brownies, Mochadoodles, Margarita Bars, Piñata Cookie Cups to Pumpkin Cookies for Fido, there is something for everyone in here! I already preordered this fabulous book for myself and it would be a great shower gift for the upcoming wedding season! Available for purchase February 1, 2022.
Thank you Netgalley, Quarto Publishing Group-Harvard Common Press, and Dorothy Kern for this eARC in exchange for my honest review.
This one surprised me with all the colors and the pictures it was so fun to actually navigate through all the instructions when you can see the results.
One thing that could maybe make me sad was the amount of chocolate in this because sadly i’m allergic to it, but I do think that I could easily replace chocolate for maybe other things maybe coconut or vanilla or fruits so not so downer.
Loved that this even has recipes for your dog I mean it was so awesome, you will have a lot of fun with this book if you like to cook and ty new things and dessert it’s always a good stop.
This book by Dorothy Kern is one of the absolute best cookie cookbooks I’ve ever read. She provides fantastic tips both at the beginning of the book as well as with each individual recipe. Full color photographs are included with each recipe which is always a plus. Ms. Kern provides a multitude of different recipes including some old favorites with a new spin as well as many new and unique recipes. This is one I’ll be purchasing both for the library I work at and my own personal library.
What better way to show love than sharing homemade cookies and milk with loved ones!
"Crazy for Cookies, Brownies, and Bars" by Dorothy Kern, is extraordinary and breathtaking. From the very first page I felt love reaching out from Dorothy Kern to her readers. Love is what baking is all about and Dorothy nailed it!
Dorothy shares the importance of quality ingredients and cooking tools needed to be a winner at baking. She includes rules for becoming a triumphant dessert chief from start to finish including icing and storing your creations. Each recipe includes tips for extra add-ons and substitutions so the reader can make treats that cater to their specific taste. The photos included are remarkable. They emit warm vibes that give the reader a "Yes! I can do this" confidence.
With more than 85 mouth-watering recipes for cookies, brownies, and bars, its hard to pick a favorite. However, if choosing just one, I was totally taken by a birthday cake Dorothy made out of cookies. It is gorgeous and easy. What a delightful way to make someone's day special. I love that thoughtful idea and can't wait to give it as a special gift.
Humorously, no one is left out of this cookbook including Dorothy's adorable dog seen in pictures as she shares recipes for doggie treats. I can't recommend this book highly enough! Readers of all ages will enjoy sharing this as a gift or hands-on in the kitchen cooking. I absolutely can't wait to get my copy when its published February 1, 2022.
Applause to Dorothy Kern for writing this 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ cookbook!!!
Thank you NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group - Harvard Common Press, for the delightful honor of reviewing this cookbook. I loved every minute of reading it!
The only downside to this cookbook is deciding which recipe to make first! The photos are stunning and had me drooling over every page. I bookmarked so many recipes that I finally just stopped because it was basically the entire book. These are unique cookie recipes that contain a wide variety of ingredients. I loved all of the tips and tricks! My thanks to the publisher for the advance reader in exchange for my honest review!
Crazy for Cookies, Brownies, and Bars: Super-Fast, Made-from-Scratch Sweets, Treats, and Desserts by Dorothy Kern offers readers tested-to-perfection recipes are easy to make and full of creative new flavor ideas. In these pages, she serves up more than 85 recipes, each with its own color photo. Detailed instructions will demonstrate how to make cookies in batches big or small and offer expert tips on how to store them so they stay fresh for a long time. What’s more, she guides you in taking your cookie skills in new directions, into the delectable world of brownies (lots of different kinds of brownies!), blondies, shortbreads, shortcakes, cookie cakes, and more. Her book includes recipes that range from traditional favorites to all-new concepts: Seriously the Best Chocolate Chip Cookies, Trail Mix Oatmeal Cookies, Raspberry Almond Spirals, Nana’s Drop Sugar Cookies, Orange Dream Cookies, Chocolate Peanut Butter Potato Chip Cookies, Brown Butter Pecan Blondies, Apple Shortbread Bars, Caramel Crunch Bars, Bacon and Caramel Brownies, Vanilla Lovers’ White Chocolate Brownies, Fruit Tart Cookie Cups, Birthday Cookie Cake, and more.
Crazy for Cookies, Brownies, and Bars is a great collection of recipes. I found the instructions, tips and ticks, and the recipes to be well written and easy to understand and follow. I like that the recipes include empirical and weight measurements, so everyone can follow recipes without extra math. I also thought to substitution and customization suggestions were well chosen and helpful to those bakers less comfortable with making those changes on their own. I think the recipes chosen are well balanced, with both basic and much more challenging. I know I saw more than one recipe that I have never seen before, and some ideas that I want to play with next time I get to baking. I know some of those stuffed cookies are on my agenda.I got to smile at the fact that she even included cookies for our furry friends. I am not sure that my bookshelves can stand another cookbook- especially another one focused on baking- but I just might be willing to try. If you have the shelf space for a good cookie and brownie cookbook, I think this would be a great addition. It should definitely be added to public libraries so those without the ability to bring another book home to stay can still enjoy this.
I devoured this book in no time and I'm now ready to get baking. This is a book that will make you hungry!
The recipes are easy to use, easy to follow and have the ingredients most of us have in our pantries. With plenty of information to get you started and wonderful photos that look good enough to eat I am loving working my way through this cookbook and trying nearly every recipe. I'm sure my friends and family will be loving me for baking all these treats for them.
A great sweet treat for anyone who loves baking and eating such delectable sweets!
While you will find recipes for many old favorites here, what makes this book special is all the innovative and often easy recipes. I found myself wanting to make so many of tehm!
One unusual aspect of the book is the chapter on no-bake cookies. These are not only the common peanut-butter-based delights, but a wide assortment of flavors to please anyone.
Unlike most other cookie books which clump brownies and blondies together, Kern has separate chapters for each. She also has a chapter on bar cookies.
If you are looking to add some fun to your cookie baking -- get this book!
I received access to the book via Netgalley, but my opinion is wholly my own.
This cookbook covers cookies, brownies, bars, and some imaginative items as well. I run a bakery so it take a bit to get me excited about a recipe and more to get my to actually make time to try something new. I found several recipes in this that I bookmarked or earmarked because I wanted to try and I already made something...I must say the skillet brownie for two was quite delish and hit the sweet spot for hubby and I tonight!
If you like cookies and brownies I think this baking book might be of interest. None of the recipes are earth shakingly new but I think there are a few surprises like stuffed cookies or the orange dream cookies. I think what I appreciated the most is all the recipes are easy to follow and has helpful tips.
This book has some absolutely lovely recipes, and the pictures are delightful. The recipes are accessible, and I can't wait to make some of them!
Thanks to Dorothy Kern, NetGalley, and Harvard Common Press for this copy.
Who doesn't love a good desert cookbook. This book features all the recipes anyone with a sweet tooth could need. There are so many fun and creative recipes here that are simple and easy to make. I love how the book is broken out by more than just dessert type, there even some fun recipes for dogs.
The bright and fun images fit the aesthetic of the cookbook so well. I also loved Kerns sweet stories before each recipe. I also appreciated her tips on each recipe which is always appreciated.
I have had the time to make some of these recipes and my friends absolutely loved them.
Some of my favorite recipes include
*Nana's Drop Sugar Cookies
*Fudgiest Brownies Ever (yes they are THAT fudgey)
*Pumpkin Spice Snickerdoodles
*Giant Stuffed Nutella Coookie (Messy but delicious)
A copy was provided by net galley for my honest review
Review to be posted on February 23rd on blog/goodreads/etc..
I received this book from Netgalley in exchange of an honest review.
I just LOVE LOVE books about baking. Always looking for new recipes to make. New recipes to try out. And this book promised some yummy food that looked so good I just wanted to grab it out of the book.
There are various parts to this book, from cookies to brownies to giant cookies. Each recipe begins with a personal story which I am still not sure if I am fan of. Haha. Sorry. I just want to get to the recipe, I don't mind a small intro but sometimes it just was a tad too much. The recipe itself is very clear to follow, I haven't yet made anything (as of writing this on 3 Feb, but by the time this pops up I will have tried a couple), but I have made enough food in my life to see if instructions are clear from just reading it. There are also tips and hints, from things to watch out for and what else you can use as toppings or fillings. My stomach was definitely growling and demanding I would make them. I had to disappoint her because well, at 11pm I am just not going to bake any more. Haha. XD
Like many cookbooks there are plenty of recipes filled with death. Yes, death. Because I am very very VERY allergic to nuts/peanuts/almonds. So I skipped those, I am sorry, I cannot make them, I cannot eat them, I cannot go near them. So yeah, useless to read.
I am also very happy to see normal measurements next to the not-so-normal (at least for me/my country) measurements. We get gram, kilos, ml, Celsius. And bless the lord for that because I have read too many English books that just go for that alone which means I just cannot do anything. I am not in the mood to go to google and see how much a cup is or how much Celsius x Fahrenheit is. SO thank you to the author! Now I can make these delightful bakes as well!
I also liked the photographs.
All in all, recommended to all! Yummy, clear instructions, variations to cookies, and more.
Wow. Cookies, brownies, and bars are my very favourite things to bake, so when I saw this book, I knew I HAD to read it. I certainly wasn’t disappointed. This book is crammed full of delicious, original recipes that I can’t wait to try out. Bacon and caramel brownies? YUM.
I always love it when a cook book has photographs of each recipe and bake, and this book has a picture on each and every recipe. There are helpful tips and hints along the way, suggesting delicious switches, or ensuring you end up with the best bake possible. As a baking enthusiast, I fell in love with this book, but it would also be perfect for the beginner baker due to its clear step by step instructions and guidance. Would definitely recommend!
Thank you to Quarto Publishing Group – Harvard Common Press and Netgalley for an eARC of this book to read and review.
Wow, what a delight this book was!
filled to the brim 85 recipes, from classic chocolate chip cookies to mint chip brownies and dog cookies - theres bound to be a recipe for you 🍪
The book begins with the basics, what tools you will need, knowing your ingredients and tips on how to store and freeze your bakes.
Then comes the best part - the recipes! I love when cookbooks include a photograph of the final item, it helps me to visualise what my bake should look like, and can be really helpful when choosing which recipe to make.
Each recipe has a little blurb about the recipe, an ingredients list, information about how many bakes the recipe should. yield, timings and nice concise instructions on how to make the recipe. Some recipes also include a tip box with some handy tips specific to that recipe.
I love the format this book takes - the ingredients list shows cup measurements but also has the metric in parentheses, as a Brit this is a great help as I don't have to flip back and forth to a conversion chart. The instructions are short and concise so you aren't overwhelmed with what you need to be doing next and did I say I love a photograph? Well the ones in this book are beautiful - but be warned, reading this book is going to make you hungry for a treat!
I also like that the book has an index - so if you know what sort of bake you want to make, you can find it effortlessly.
This book is perfect for the bakers in your life, and would be suitable for baking with children too. I can see this book becoming a firm favourite in our house, and the houses of our friends and family 😊
I received this book for free from NetGalley for my honest review.
I love brownies and my kids love cookies so this was an ideal book for both. Just a little thing that I loved whilst browsing the recipes, the fact that the recipes have the gram equivalent to cups.
All the bakes sound lovely and I love the backgrounds to each recipe.
We tried initially the sprinkle cookies and the caramel and bacon brownies. Both recipes were easy to follow and didn’t have a lot of ingredients that we wouldn’t usually have in the cupboard. After the easy to follow recipe both were lovey and didn’t last very long.
If you have a sweet tooth this book is ideal with both traditional recipes and more adventurous alternatives.
Oh em gee my diet is OUT THE WINDOW after reading this book. My kids and I have already added 4 recipes to our meal plans for the month. The best sweets cookbook. There’s pictures for every recipe and there’s even a section for doggy treats! Now if you’ll excuse me I’m off to make brownies!!
Thank you to the publisher, author, and NetGalley for the electronic copy of this book in exchange for honest feedback. I was immediately attracted to this book due to a modern, eye-catching cover. I love cookbooks and baking, so this book is something that I would consider reading already. There are a lot of books with similar aims, so this review attempts to point out what is strong and unique about it!
This book is about cookies, brownies, and bars. The photography is high quality, the recipes are straight forward and clear. The layout is consistent and modern throughout, with photos & clear instructions. Then there is a tip on most pages as well. I loved the recipe for the Fudgiest Brownies Ever & Vanilla Lover's White Chocolate Brownies. A lot of these recipes produced some desserts that are absolutely gorgeous and look delicious. A lot of these end products are similar to what you'd see in an everyday bakery, making them accessible and doable.
Something that is the cutest part of this book? They have a section for dog cookies!!
I received a copy of this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is a fun recipe book!
Recipes are listed in both cups and grams and cover cookies, brownies, and various bars. There's some standard recipes and some are a bit more unique. There's also a recipe for a layered cookie cake that looks delicious. The instructions are pretty standard and clear on how to mix your desserts.
Overall a nice find!
Yum!! I want to try nearly all of these recipes, and have already tried a couple, which were delicious. Cannot recommend this enough, it is amazing. Even some dog biscuit recipes!!
Yummy cookies! There’s enough recipes in this cookbook that even if you made a different recipe each week that you’d never get through them all!! Lots of bar and no-bake recipes for times you want easy or for the kids to make with little to no supervision. Besides the usual like chocolate chip, there are recipes that I’ve never made and so I’ve got some new ideas. Pardon me while I go bake up some Bacon and Caramel Brownies.
I received an advanced reader copy for free from NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving my review.
This is a great cookie, brownies and bars recipe cookbook. I really liked the extra tips that were added.
The recipes were easy and with Simple instructions making it easy to understand. Photos were beautiful making me want to bake everything on every page. Thank you for all your time and effort that you put into this wonderful cookbook.
Dorothy Kern’s Crazy for Cookies, Brownies, and Bars is an easy and wonderful collection of delicious dessert recipes. I particularly love the abundance of bright full-colour pictures as well as the approachable recipes. This is a perfect cookbook for beginners but there are also many recipes for those who want to try some fun new things in the kitchen!
I definitely enjoyed this pretty and yummy cookbook! The book’s overall design is simple but nicely bright and eyecatching. I absolutely love that every single recipe comes with simple but lovely and clear full-colour pictures. I have read way too many cookbooks with dull designs and barely any pictures so this book was a breath of fresh air!
The book has eight chapters: Cookie Jar Favorites; Brownies; Blondies and Bars; Cookie Cakes, Skillet Bakes, and Cups–Oh My!; Crazy Cookies; Stuffed and Sandwiched; No Oven, No Problem: No-Bake Cookies and Bars; and For Man’s Best Friend: Dog Cookies for your BFF. There is also a concise and helpful section with information on important baking ingredients, useful baking tools, tips for storing and freezing your goodies as well as the basic rules for successful cookie baking.
I really like the range of fun and innovative baked goodies! There are simple favourites like Nutella Brownies, Sprinkle Cookies, and Nana’s Drop Sugar Cookies. However, if you’re feeling adventurous, you can whip up Bacon and Caramel Brownies, Triple Decker Cookie Bars (with layers of chocolate cookies, chocolate chip cookies and Oreos!), or Stuffed Carrot Cake Cookies. Kern even includes recipes for Pumpkin Dog Cookies and Ginger’s Gingerbread Cookies so that our canine friends can have some treats too!
The recipes are clearly written and easy-to-follow. Each recipe begins with a brief write-up describing the inspiration or history behind the recipe. Kern’s writing is lightly humorous and easy-to-read. For the most part, I liked reading these little introductions but, sometimes, they got a little lengthy and repetitive. I love the useful tips that come with most of the recipes. I also love how accessible and approachable all the recipes are as most of the ingredients are pantry staples. Furthermore, while several of the recipes may be time or labour-intensive, the dishes are very doable for even the most amateur of bakers.
Crazy for Cookies, Brownies, and Bars is a deliciously wonderful cookbook that will be a welcome addition to your collection!
🍪🍪🍪🍪 ½ cookies out of 5!
I follow Dorothy on social media, so I was excited to see her new cookbook on NetGalley for early viewing. Her recipes are easy to follow and simply make good food. This is a great cookbook to have and to keep for new ideas. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with a copy to review.
Disclaimer* I did not read this cover to cover! But instead check the ease of which I could personally follow the provided recipes.
As a food blogger I love finding recipes online. Especially when the instructions are so easy to follow.
I understand that a look of cookbooks these days come with the authors personal stories and how they can up with whatever they’re cooking/baking. But honestly, that doesn’t always interest me.
And I have to say this book is a win for me. I loved how it was all organised. And I especially loved the section for No bake cookies and bars!
I tried the chocolate chip cookie dough bars and they they turned out delicious!!
I can’t wait to try out a few more of the recipes I’ve earmarked for myself.
Okay, everyone who knows that sweets are superior to all other flavors are at the right place with Dorothy Kern’s Crazy for Cookies, Brownies, and Bars. I enjoyed the fact that Kern’s included both traditional baked recipes interspersed with new takes on old favorites! Andddd I loved that the colorful pictures were sprinkled throughout the book, because visuals are optimal for cookbooks, in my humble opinion.
I received an ARC from the author and publisher in exchange for an honest review.
A lovely book with well set out, easy to follow recipes. All the pictures are mouthwatering and I cant wait to test some out.
Crazy for Cookies, Brownies and Bars by Dorothy Kern is a fun cookbook. I think it would be a great gift along with some cookie cutters, cookie scoops or a cookie sheet.
There are 85 recipes spread over 203 pages. There are a lot of recipes that I would like to try, like - Stuffed Carrot Cake Cookies on page 172. There are 8 chapters with the last one being cookies for your dog. That makes the book really special for my family and friends, we love our dogs.
My favorite part of the book was the Introduction - Know Your Key Ingredients, Frosting Tips, Tools for Successful Baking, Storing and Freezing and the Seven Rules for Successful Cookie Baking. I thought that all of this information was very useful in baking the recipes in the book and for baking in general.
There is information at the beginning of each chapter that gives you hints for that type of cookie. Like who knew that the best way to cut a brownie is with a plastic knife.
I liked that most recipes have Tips and Variations for changing up the recipe. There are great photos with each recipe. Each recipe has prep time and bake time to give you an idea of what you are getting into. She also shares a personal note with each recipe which was interesting and fun. There are cake options with icing and/or bar options for a lot of the recipes.
Down side of the book for me - no information about how to make the recipes for those of us with food allergies - my recipes have to be gluten free. So the recipes with Oreos and Graham Crackers do not work for me. Not sure how the recipes would taste with gluten free flour, or which one I should consider using. Also, we do not like coffee at our house, so we would have to figure out what to do about that item in a recipe or just skip that recipe.
This book is the perfect read for anyone who enjoys cooking "naughty" food! The cover was interesting, and it was clearly written.
The recipes in this book were fabulous - I admit to trying a few - and now I'm looking forward to trying some more!
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me the advance copy of this book. I’m an accomplished baker but cookies are my absolute favorite as there’s less that could go wrong during the bake and of course they are portable! Can’t wait to try a few that stand out Oreo truffle brownies,,chocolate lovers cookie cups and finally how awesome do bacon caramel brownies sound .? Think I have a chocolate problem? This book will be a wonderful addition to my extensive collection of cookbooks when it becomes available.

Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.
I am obsessed with this cookie cookbook! My girls and I love to bake and these cookies and skillet deserts are absolutely perfect! I would love a physical copy of this book book!
This delicious cookbook made me want to try every single cookie, brownie, and bar in its pages. Kern's chatty recipes are full of practical advice, easy-to-source ingredients, and beautiful color photos. There's something for every appetite, from adorable sprinkle cookies to peanut butter stuffed brownies. Great for a home baker or public library collection.
Totally mouthwatering! Fabulous colour photos showcasing this incredibly yummy array of naughty treats. As you flick through the book, each page greets you with even more delicious creations. The cookie selection is outrageously inviting but wait ‘til you see the brownies and cake bars…a whole new level of heavenly indulgence!
