Description
Elizabeth's reign is reaching its winter and England's old adversaries are fading. But in a world on the brink of change, showing any weakness can be fatal...
1598. Nicholas Shelby, unorthodox physician and reluctant spy for Robert Cecil, has brought his wife Bianca and their child home from exile in Padua. Welcome at court, his star is in the ascendancy. But he has returned to a dangerous world.
Two old enemies are approaching their final reckoning. England and Spain are exhausted by war. In London, Elizabeth is entering the twilight of her reign. In Madrid, King Philip of Spain is dying. Perhaps now is the time for one last throw of the dice.

'No-one is better than S. W. Perry at leading us through the squalid streets of London in the sixteenth century' Andrew Swanston
'An excellent evocation of Elizabethan England, with espionage, intricate conspiracies, strange medical practises and a gripping story. A rattling good read' William Ryan
'A gorgeous book - rich, intelligent and dark in equal measure. It immerses you in the late 16th century and leaves you wrung out with terror. This is historical fiction at its most sumptuous' Rory Clements
'Wonderful! Beautiful writing, and Perry's Elizabethan London is so skilfully evoked, so real that one can almost smell it' Giles Kristian

The fourth of a the series featuring Nicholas Shelby and Bianca set during the reign of the Tudor Queen Elizabeth. It is again a great read, easy and compelling and if you've enjoyed the previous books the continuation of their story is definitely worth while. I could read anything by SW Parry.
The Rebel’s Mark is the latest book in the consistently excellent Jackdaw series by S W Perry and it is another very worthy addition.
Nicholas Shelby and his wife are this time sent to Ireland where they face danger at every turn with everyone seemingly playing a game but who is friend and who foe?
The book is very well potted and well paced right until the gripping finale.
The author has created a terrific cast of characters and hopefully there are future adventures for them all
Highly recommended.
Another wonderfully written book continuing the exploits of Nicholas and Bianca. This time the story is based in London and Ireland. This series goes from strength to strength, and although I have just finished this one I cannot wait for the next in the series. Please read this book you will not be disappointed.
For those who love a historical novel, this is most certainly a series to get into. The characters are carefully drawn and easy to connect with, good and bad. The depiction of life in Elizabethan England is detailed and fascinating - from the way of life for rich or poor, to the intrigues and deceptions and misapprehensions and fear and disregard for human life and the ease with which it could be lost. The story takes us from the palace to Bankside to Ireland and back, giving an insight into a segment of our history few know anything about, but which explains much.
