Description

Enjoying an overdue break in Venice, the Bishop of Rhyminster has a chance encounter with Oliver Canford; a flamboyant tour guide, staying at the same hotel who grew up in a vicarage and read Theology at Cambridge. Despite misgivings from his wife, Bishop Bob offers him the post of Bishop’s Lay assistant.

But Canford neglects his duties in favour of flirting with the Chorister Mums, pursuing eligible widows around Cathedral Close and disappearing to London to sing with his refined choir. When one of his absences extends to 48 hours, the Bishop worries. He calls in his old friend John Tedesco, who runs a bespoke detective agency with his colleague Lynne Davey.

When a body is discovered in the Rhyme Chantry, a forbidding structure known as “the Cage”, the tiny tourist city is thrust under the media spotlight, suspicion falling on a leading member of the Cathedral staff.

Join Tedesco and Davey as they encounter a byzantine world of rival voluntary groups, hard pressed clergy and warring choral societies. Can they cut through the confusion and solve the mystery of “The Cage” before DCI Bloomfield jumps to the wrong conclusion?

A Note From the Publisher

Radu Herklots grew up in Plymouth. Despite having a Romanian first name and German surname, he is a proud west countryman. Having spent most of his adult life living and working in medieval cathedral cities, he divides his time between writing about the exploits of John Tedesco, volunteering at Salisbury Cathedral, and watching his local football team.

This is a cunning whodunit set in the fictional cathedral city of Rhyminster. I love the lucid portrayal of every day life in a close knit Church of England community. There's good olde English humour here and something much deeper. The characters are brilliantly drawn, sometimes dastardly, but often full of sympathetic wisdom.
Barker joins a long line of formidable fictional canine investigators and is just as cute and loveable as the creations of Conan-Doyle and Agatha Christie.
The writing is intelligent, stylish and evocative. The plot, which has many complexities, is laid out with cutting edge perfection.
I give praise and rejoice that there are more novels to come in this series.

A Solid Puzzle…
The first in the John Tedesco series of mysteries and a solid puzzle within a nicely presented narrative. A body is discovered in the Rhyme Chantry - an ominous looking structure known as The Cage. The local media runs with the story and Cathedral staff are thrown into the glare of the spotlight. With an engaging protagonist and a well crafted cast this is both entertaining and immersive.
