Description
Discovering Buddhism introduces Buddhism as a culture and civilization, a system of thought and a religion. This fascinating book presents the views and practices of all the main Buddhist traditions without bias and addresses the history of Buddhism, the key topics taught by the Buddha, and a selection of contemporary issues. It also includes critical assessments of the material, connecting traditional accounts with contemporary scholarship.
The author makes each subject relevant and interesting so readers can engage in personal reflection and inquiry. This encounter with Buddhist ideas invites readers to question their outlook on life and can help make their views more aligned with reality.
The book is written in a clear and accessible way for the non-specialist and provides up-to-date information for the teaching of Buddhism in schools complemented by the educational resources available on the Windows into Buddhism website. Thank you to the author, publisher and Net Galley for providing a free e-ARC copy of this book in exchange for my review.
I'm not a full newbie to Buddhism, but do still have a lot to learn. So I was eager to read this one. It was easy to read, informative and I felt like I learned facts not only about the Buddha and Buddhism, but other teachings as well. I appreciate the fact the author added time lines and charts to sum up information presented. This was an ebook copy, which was difficult to highlight and note, so I would be interested in a print copy that I could flag, highlight and note for easy reference. I will look for the book in print when it is published as well as watching out for others by the author.
For those curious about or learning about Buddhism, I would recommend this book.
I have not finished this cover to cover but I must say its so informative without being boring. I have always been intrigued by Buddhism and this is a beginner friendly book! It is a must read for anyone interested in the subject
I wish I had this book when I was taking religion in college. This is one book that gives Buddhism in its basics and in an understandable manner.
I haven't read a lot about Buddhism, but this is well done, and nicely summarizes a lot of material. It's nice to have the context for some of the teachings, as well as summations of the many of teachings. Recommended.
Thanks very much for the free review copy!!
researched and constructed well. It’s can be kinda dry at it’s a timeline of events & religious belief, and history as it’s was left for us. But still well worth the read for a great understanding and appreciation for Buddhism
Dominique Side writes a book that is helpful to new-comers to Buddhism but not in the usual way. Side posits Buddhism through the lens of changing one's life with what are principles of Buddhism but is not wed to Buddhism itself. A new way of looking at oneself and the world around us is quite enlightening - at least for me.
The contextualization, history, and culture of Buddhism offer a grounding in a wider area of Buddhist thought. It is presented in the way of an author without an agenda.
I enjoyed this book
