Description

A timely, beautiful exploration of America’s rich history of diversity, Journey to America profiles 20 immigrants and children of immigrants who have affected the nation’s culture or business.

From showstopping entertainers to game-changing activists to brilliant scientists, these first- and second-generation Americans show the determination and innovation that has shaped the country we know today:
  • Science: Kalpana Chawla (astronaut), I. M. Pei (architect), Chien-Shiung Wu (particle physicist), and Albert Einstein (theoretical physicist)
  • Entertainment: Tan France (fashion designer), Camila Cabello (singer-songwriter), M. Night Shyamalan (filmmaker), Natalie Portman (actress), Rihanna (singer), and Dikembe Mutombo (basketball player)
  • Politics: Ilhan Omar (congresswoman), Arnold Schwarzenegger (former governor of California), and Alexander Hamilton (founding father)
  • Business: Indra Nooyi (former PepsiCo CEO), Sergey Brin (Google co-founder)
  • Children of immigrants: America Ferrara (actress), Walt Disney (founder of The Walt Disney Company), Michelle Kwan (figure skater), Kamala Harris (U.S. vice president), and Barack Obama (former U.S. president)
Journey to America gives you all the stats, facts, and behind-the-scenes information on who they are as well as what they’ve done.

Author-illustrator Maliha Abidi’s striking illustrated portraits bring the personalities to life in vivid color. Sidebars explain historical and political facts about the immigration process, highlighting the differences between a permanent resident and a citizen, a first- and second-generation American, and more.

As children develop their own dreams for the future, the diverse stories and accomplishments of these American immigrants serve as inspiration.

Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to receive an advance copy in exchange for my honest review-

This was a neat book- I do appreciate the mix of past and present- so my kids were entertained with the ones they knew and the ones I was able to show them. Enough info for I’d say Ages 5-8/9. Beautiful illustrations. Would recommend to my teacher friends!

This is a wonderful book to contradict the anti immigration noise surrounding us. Perfect tool for research projects. The only reason I would not use in class room is due to being canadian. It is a great book with plenty of interesting facts and successful stories of proud immigrants

This picture book biography tells the story of 20 famous people who have immigrated to North America (or whose parents immigrated and they were born here) and recognizes the accomplishments these people have made on society today. Each person has about 2 full page spreads including a detailed portrait, about 2 pages of biographical information and their story, as well as some fun facts or background information related to that person and their story. It is organized into 5 sections: Science, Entertainment, Politics, Business and Children of Immigrants and features people such as: Albert Einstein, Rihanna, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Barack Obama. It is a fabulous book and definitely a great resource for young people wanting to choose role models or people to study for school projects. It introduces a lot of great people and shows their accomplishments but also doesn't go overboard with information. I think it would be the perfect starting point for students wanting to learn more about people who were not born in North America but still managed to make a huge impact on Canada and the U.S. I would recommend this book to parents and teachers of children in the age 6-13 range. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book!

Journey to America is an anthology of people who achieved great things and are immigrants or first generation American. It's broken down into categories like scientists, entertainment, politics, etc and each category is filled with diverse and (mostly) well known people. I thought it was very interesting and hopefully kids can see themselves in it or realize how many great achievers have different backgrounds.

This is a fantastic collection of biographies showcasing what immigrants have brought to our country. I think this is an excellent book to have in the classroom both for students who can see themself in the stories and those who could benefit from realizing the great benefits diversity has to our country. The illustrations are vibrant and engaging and the stories are inspirational!
