Description

“Susi Holliday is one of our best and most original creators of tense and twisty tales.” —Ian Rankin

Four hikers enter the mountains. Only two return. But is it tragedy? Or treachery?

When sisters Cat and Ginny travel with their husbands to the idyllic Swiss Alps for a hiking holiday, it’s not just a chance to take in the stunning scenery. It’s an opportunity to reconnect with each other after years of drifting apart—and patch up marriages that are straining at the seams.

As they head into the mountains, morale is high, but as the terrain turns treacherous, cracks in the relationships start to show. With worrying signs that someone might be following them, the sun begins to set and exhaustion kicks in. Suddenly, lost high on a terrifying ridge, tensions spill over—with disastrous consequences.

When only two of the four hikers make it down from the mountain, the police press them for their story—but soon become suspicious when their accounts just don’t add up.

What really happened up on that ridge? Who are the survivors? And what secrets are they trying to hide?

Advance Praise

“An edge-of-your seat thriller where the sense of menace ratchets higher with every step along the hiking path. Utterly immersive with brilliant storytelling, it’s smart, scary and ingeniously moreish.” —Steph Broadribb, author of Death in the Sunshine

“A deliciously dark mystery about warring sisters, their duplicitous husbands, and a hike that ends in murder. With a cast of gloriously unlikeable characters, any one of them could be the murderer, and any of them could be dead. Chock full of secrets, lies, resentment and revenge, The Hike kept me guessing until the last page.” —CL Taylor, author of The Guilty Couple

“I devoured The Hike in a couple of days. Smart, pacy, and packed full of twists that’ll keep you guessing. A really fantastic read.” —Lisa Gray, author of the Jessica Shaw series

Isn't it nice when adult siblings still get along so well that they go on vacation together? Car and Ginny are sisters who along with their husbands, Paul and Tristan plan a weekend in the Swiss Alps. They will enjoy the hotel, eat amazing food, drink, and hike a mountain that promises stunning views. Before they are even out of the car, you realize that these people aren't quite the good friends and family that one might imagine. They must all be planning to carry very heavy backpacks to hold all of their secrets and lies.
The hike goes wrong almost from the start. Ginny is unprepared and hungover. Cat is trying to keep her temper under control, not wanting to deviate from her plan. Paul is angry and Tristan, the one with the map, may or may not know how to lead them to their destination.
The book opens with only two of them, an unknown man and woman descending the mountain and heading to the police station. We then go back and forth between the present and the past to find out what happened and why. Every time I thought I had figured out what was going on and who made it, there was another twist. Oh, and the ending was truly a surprise.
This was a morning treadmill read for me and I hit my sixty-minute goal each day without the dreaded, I am bored hitting even once.

Overall 3.75*

It seems to be the norm at the moment for authors to write books where the characters are not very likable, and this is no exception. The four main ones certainly don't attract the reader to them nor even each other!. This in itself doesn't make for a bad story though. Throughout the plot there are lots of twists and turns to throw you off the scent and that is one of the strengths of Ms. Holliday. That being said, I did prefer her previous book The Last Resort. It is at points a bit unbelievable - yes I know it's fiction, however.... and it does suddenly come to an end.

Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC to review.

A quick and twisty mystery concerning two couples and multiple betrayals. The shifting perspectives and narrators leave the reader guessing until the very end. I’m not sure any of the characters are likable but I also suspect that is not the author’s goal. An enjoyable read!
