Description
Exercise is the most reliable way to improve mental health. But if you're depressed, anxious, burned out, or struggling, it may feel impossible to get started, get serious, or even get up.
Written by an neurodivergent exercise professional, Work It Out busts myths about fitness while providing clear, actionable advice on how to:
- Incorporate exercise into your daily life
- Build an adjustable workout plan for both good and bad mental health days
- Shake off the messages that say you're never doing enough
- Set up a workout log that motivates you in exactly the way you need
- Celebrate all your achievements, including getting out of bed
- But also get a little exercise in bed, if that's where you are today
Work It Out meets you where you are—even if you're lying on the floor.

What a lovely and encouraging book. As someone who did not have a good time in PE growing up, I appreciate that professional trainer Sarah Kurchak has written a book for people who are not elated at the prospect of exercise. There are chapters on weight lifting, strength training, etc., but presented with creative alternatives if you're not a gym person. (She doesn't disparage anyone who enjoys going to the gym, either.) There are even lists of exercises you can do if you don't feel up to leaving your bed. Work It Out will meet you where you are.
The only thing I would have appreciated is illustrations or photos to go with the lists of suggested exercises. I am a visual learner and want to make sure I'm doing things right to avoid injury.
This book would be a good addition to any public library collection.
