Description

When Harvey Dowd, along with the help of his life-long friend Conor, opened The Dead Superstar Bar in downtown Sarasota, they weren't prepared for what was to come.

The pair envisioned a local bar with a house band playing 60's music, but only music released by deceased 60's stars. They didn't foresee those stars returning to perform nightly at his bar. It turns out that heaven does have a hell of a band. Dead musicians performing live at a bar in Florida, God's Waiting Room, what could go wrong?

The Dead Superstar Bar is a humorous upbeat look back at the 60s; its music, its craziness, and the musicians who made it unforgettable.

I'm not sure what I just read! It was part fantasy, part spiritual, part Twilight Zone-ish. None of these are normally part of my wheelhouse but something drew me to this book.

Two friends in Sarasota decide to open a bar in Sarasota Florida that is dedicated strictly to 1960s music by dead singers. They have a house band but one by one, the dead stars start appearing themselves and sing a set or two with the house band. It starts with George Harrison.

The author did copious research into 60s music. Most of the book is basically a playlist of music of the era with background information on the songs and artists. Much of it was very interesting, though I remained confused while reading it.

It's not a long book but it starts to become repetitive as it progressed. I skimmed a few of the parts.

A huge twist came at the end, one I was not expecting. It was a surprise. To me, it was a nice surprise.

Kudos to the author. Research is intensive work, but presenting facts is relatively easy. But, to have the imagination to twist the story at the end is wonderful. I have no idea how realistic it is, but it gave me a hopeful, warm and fuzzy feeling.

I have deducted one star because I found the repetitive list of facts a bit monotonous. But the premise of the book, the characters, and most of the execution is well worth four stars!

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review "The Dead Superstar Bar" by Michael Nohe.
This is the first and only book that I've read by this author - but what an introduction!
While I'm sure that there will be many detractors, I personally enjoyed every minute of the book (sometimes with tears in my eyes thinking of chances missed).
In short, two great friends with a love of 60's era music and musicians have opened a bar in Sarasota, Florida (touted as God's Waiting Room), and they plan on highlighting the music of their favourite era with a passable cover band. Then one evening, George appears on stage to handle the duties on one of Harrison's signature tunes.... turns out George seems to be a silent partner in the bar, and subsequently invites many of his (deceased) friends, peers and compatriots for once-in-a-lifetime performances.
And suddenly, The Dead Superstar Bar is the most popular bar in the State, if not the Country.
Not going to give away any more of the story, but it really was a lot of fun (except maybe for some over-the-top philosophizing) and any 60s aficionado should be well entertained.
I probably could have read this in one sitting - but I didn't want to. And wait for the twist at the end. You won't believe it (or maybe you will).
Recommended.

If You Remember the 60s, You Weren't There!
This wonderful book is about a bar that features dead superstars from the 1960s. There is so much music trivia about bands of the 1960s including many facts that are not well-known. It has bits in common with The Hitchhiker's guide to the Galaxy'. Some parts are heavy on the philosophy of life and the meaning of everything. In all, it is truly wonderful. I listened to almost every song in my head as I read the book. The book asks the reader to suspend disbelief and buy into a great alternate reality. Just don't overthink it, and you will love it.

Harvey Dowd and his friend Conor just opened The Dead Superstar Bar in Sarasota (FL) which would only play '60s music, but only from artists who are dead. But when George Harrison drops in and plays on the 2nd night the bar was open, thing started going weird. Over the next two weeks a multitude of great '60s music artists drops in and plays their hits for appreciative audiences. How and why this is happening only comes clear at the end. The journey to that end is filled with names and songs that deserve to be listened to. A great book to remind the reader of all the interesting music that came out of the 1960s!

Thanks Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book!

It's an unexpected and highly entertaining book, a summary of 60s rock music that starts strong, it's a bit repetitive in the middle and ends with a surprising twist.
There's humour, good music, and a cast of likeable characters.
The author is talented and I hope there will be more books as I had fun in reading this one.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this arc, all opinions are mine
