IN THIS VOLUME: Lovestruck in Barcelona by Enrique Vila-Matas • Supermanza 503 by Gabi Martinez • The Great Barcelona Novel by Miqui Otero • and more
Thirty years after the 1992 Olympics, which redefined the city’s contemporary identity and changed its destiny, The Passenger travels to Barcelona to understand the history and future of one of the cradles of political, cultural, and urban change in Europe.
From the debate about the impact of mass tourism to the search of new and sustainable models of economic and social development; from the eternal rivalry with Madrid to the rediscovery of the city’s rich tradition of political activism: this volume of The Passenger offers a panoramic view of a city striving to trace a new path forward out of the current crisis, and find a way of life centred on the well-being of its citizens.

I just discovered on booksta that this is part of a travel series, which I should’ve guessed. As the title here suggests, this issue focuses on Barcelona. Essays/articles describe the recent history of the city and its general atmosphere. I was personally there for 10 days, in 2016, and although the trip was really chill, I still found myself completely in awe of the sights and vibe of the different areas Barcelona has to offer. So this was nice to reminisce with, especially because subjects vary from cultural to political and I’m interested in all of them. I do wish there were a couple more pictures, just to tie things up. The literary references and playlist at the end were much appreciated!
