Insightful read!
Discusses various situations and how to manage angry or petty people. Spot on along with the direct approach.
Although as a novel it is lacking in structure.
Thank you to the publishers for sending me this in exchange for my honest thoughts.

"How to Deal With Angry People" is a timely book, and one I was eager to read. I found the chapters useful, particularly Chapter 6: Strategy One: Work Out What You Really Want. I've noticed things get personal quickly when people rage, so the concept of taking a pause to figure out what our goals are for the situation and what outcome we really want seems highly relevant. I would recommend this for anyone who wants to learn how to deal with angry people, and perhaps more nuanced, how to deal with yourself. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.

How to Deal with Angry People : 10 Strategies for Facing Anger at Home, at Work and in the Street is a self help book for dealing with explosive situations and angry people in variety of situation. The author has a large TikTok presence and lots of experience in this area. While there are lots of good ideas the structure of the book is a bit chaotic and there are lots of errors in the digital copy which made it more difficult to read. Overall though very good and helpful.

Amazing approach to understanding anger and it’s complexities. The author goes into depth of providing education, compassion and importance of boundaries. It is a great book to read for everyone, as anger is an often misunderstood emotion. One of the best books I have read in a long time!

Thank you the Anger Professor - this book did not disappoint! The writing style is humorous and easy to follow. I now have a better understanding of my own anger and how to manage it. I also have insight into what's going on for others when they get angry and options for how to communicate in these situations.

I am now looking forward to reading the author's previous book - Why We Get Mad: How to Use Your Anger for Positive Change.

You’re probably interested in this book because you have at least one angry person in your life, whether it’s a boss, friend or family member.
This book looks at why people are angry and - in the second half - ten strategies for dealing with them.
I found this book very practical and full of techniques and tips you can use.
It sets them out really clearly.
But it doesn’t shy away from making you consider your part in the angry relationship, while being absolutely clear that you must stay safe from abusive people.
In summary, I’d really recommend this very accessible and human guide, using real example to illustrate.

As a teacher, I have seen a definite increase in anger periods and fits of 'uncontrollable' rage among my students.
This book helped me to understand some types of behaviour and how to deal with them. One of the best practical guides I've come across with! I highly recommend it to anyone going through rough times.

Dr Martin has dealt with this topic well, and what he has to say, although it is research based, can be understood by most laypersons, and by most readers, because it is written in easy to read language that explains the subject of anger really well. It is right in my opinion that anger can be used to control others, but that sometimes anger is justified. It is a complicated subject, which has been explained well in this book. Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for giving me a copy of the book.

How to Deal with Angry People by Dr. Ryan Martin is one of my most anticipated reads of 2023 and it did not disappoint. At the heart of the matter, Dr. Martin wants his readers to know that dealing with angry people isn't just about having a set of tools to manage conflict but about wanting to be the type of person in life who is able to come out of tense situations and interpersonal encounters with a positive outcome. When we can become people who value growth, understanding, and compassion, we can truly master the art of dealing with angry people in our lives whether that be a one off encounter or dealing with someone we must interact with everyday.

There are so many aspects of this personal development book that I appreciated including the author's note in the beginning that reminds readers that our safety is a priority and this book is not about learning to tolerate abuse of any kind, the reflections on the state of our society post-pandemic and how this has contributed to an increase in anger and aggression, the science-based facts provided throughout the text that help readers understand human behavior better, and the anger tips woven throughout that help arm readers with tools around what to do in the moment they are confronted with an angry person.

The book is divided into two parts: Understanding angry people (a look at personality types and the myriad ways anger can be expressed) and part two which provides ten specific strategies for how to manage interactions with angry people in the moment. While this book focuses on the emotion, expression, and impact of anger it is also a crash course on human relationships and helps readers to honor and understand our own values, needs, and boundaries as it relates to the interpersonal.

Thank you to the author and publisher for the e-arc copy! This is a book I cannot wait to add to my therapist book shelf!

Ryan Martin obviously spends a lot of time reading about psychological studies and research. His writing is straight-forward and easy to follow and understand. After his thorough explanation about anger and the studies on it, the most helpful part of the book begins. His ten strategies for how to deal with anger and angry people are very practical and helpful. I wish for a less angry world. Perhaps Mr. Martin can help us achieve that.

My thanks to Watkins Publishing for granting me access to a DRC of this book via NetGalley. It is scheduled for publication 5/9/23. All opinions stated in this review are my own and are freely given.

How to deal with angry people is a book that has 9 strategies to help you in all parts of your life, be it work, home, friends or strangers and how to navigate a way to find solutions to interact and move forward with encounters of anger.

I first found myself drawn to the book as a bar supervisor I often have to try and communicate with angry customers.

I also can find myself getting angry every now and then over silly small things in every day life so thought it would be good to get an insight in to why this happens also. I found the book to be very helpful in both instances.

The book is written clearly and is easy to read and understand. It starts by exploring the differences with anger and aggression.

Topics covered in the book include personality state or trait, why people get mad and how to use anger for positive change, genetics and childhood, what the goal of communication is and how to get there and also discusses how to disengage with angry people.

I will be recommending this book to others and looking up Dr Martins previous work.

I was interested in the premise of this book as someone in a public- facing profession who occasionally has to deal with conflict. It was a well-written, easy read with some helpful information. Many thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the advance copy.

How to Deal with Angry People is a tutorial and self-help guide for managing conflict by psychology professor Dr. Ryan Martin. Due out 9th May 2023 from Watkins Publishing, it's 224 pages and will be available in paperback, audio, and ebook formats.

This is a very well written, logical, accessible, and most strikingly reasonable monograph on anger: what it is, why it happens, how to recognize it in ourselves and others, and what we can do about it. The author uses considerable effort to emphasize that dealing with angry people should -never- come at the cost of sacrificing personal safety. For people who are in unsafe situations because of the anger of the people around them, he provides some basic resources for finding help to come into a better/safer environment.

The second half of the book provides 10 strategies for different situations and how to use the information provided to communicate and ameliorate inevitable conflicts which arise.

This is an information dense, useful book. There's very little "polyanna" unproductive relentless positivity and I was surprised how sensible and practical the recommendations are. This would be a good choice for public or school library acquisition or home use.

Four stars.

Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

Ryan Martin, aka Tiktok's "The Anger Professor" writes a well researched, helpful, emotionally insightful, and informative guide on the topic of anger that will resonate with almost anyone living in our increasingly fraught and confrontational contemporary world, within relationships, in the home, family, online and other interactions in the public arena. The emotional toll and stress generated by having to deal with angry people on an everyday basis makes this potentially a valuable guide that will appeal to a wide range of readers. However, the author makes it clear this book is not for those in abusive relationships where a person is being regularly harmed physically and emotionally.

It is organised into 2 parts, Part 1 looks towards understanding angry people and their experiences, drawing on psychology research and practice, and explores personality types, biology, emotional development, emotional contagion, and different thinking styles. However, there are situations where anger is a justifiable response and there are cultural inequalities to be found in the different expectations of how anger should be expressed based on race and gender. Anger can be both a state and a personality trait, anger tends to generate a emotional response, angry people are not always monsters, although they can be dangerous and toxic. Part 2 offers 10 strategies on coping with and managing angry people, personally, in relationships and families, and professionally, including the need to work out what you really want, staying calm, recognising anger in its numerous forms, looking at the situation from a angry person's perspective, etc..

Martin integrates this easy to read guide throughout with tips, case studies, activities and facts that enhance understanding and provide potential opportunities to implement good practice, and contribute towards creating and integrating strategies aiming for the best possible outcomes for the anger scenarios that the reader might find themselves facing. This is a pertinent guide for everyone with the fragmentary world we live in today, and anger is an interesting topic to explore in its own right too. Highly recommended. Many thanks to the publisher for an ARC.

This book was a fascinating read. The author skilfully wove together theory, research, anecdotes and practical advice (along with dashes of humour) to give readers a deeper understanding of anger and a range of techniques for dealing with it. The stories used as examples throughout the chapters brought everything to life and made the experiences and ideas feel relatable and easy to understand. Anyone who reads this will benefit.
