There are only two explanations for what has been happening. Either he is trying to make me think I’m crazy or he’s trying to kill me. The one thing I know for sure is that I need to get out of this house.
After everything that happened here, I should never have come back. I let him talk me into it. I gave up so easily, and for what?
I got myself into this and now, I either get myself out of it or I find out which of the explanations is correct.

I don’t usually read mystery/thrillers, but this was unputdownable!
I literally finished it in one sitting - I did not see anything coming, to be honest.
The storyline was utterly captivating and the chatacters were dimensional. The suspense was through the roof. I highly recommend this if you’re after a quick read that will keep you engaged all the way through.
Heart pounding thriller that left me on the edge of my seat. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one. Definitely one of the best books this year.
Great easy read for between heavier titles and I managed to read this one in a day
Captivating storyline and storytelling but with basic characters and setting descriptions. Written from the POV of Ella who returns with her new partner to her childhood home after the death of her abusive father. In just a matter of days her mental health starts to rapidly decline and she feels trapped. Is her new boyfriend to blame or is the house trying to get rid of her for the second time?
Contained plenty of suspense and just enough confusion to keep me guessing right until the end. The explanation was convincing but the last chapter had another twist for me
*Trigger Warning Themes - Mental Health, Domestic Violence and Emotional Abuse*
HOWEVER…all is not what it seems
Finished this book in one sitting - just couldn’t put it down!! Lots of twists and turns and the ending wasn’t what I thought it was going to be!! Was absolutely adamant the title was a clue as to who the culprit was!
This is really different. I haven’t seen that twist before and I found it surprising and shocking! The ending really made me think about what I read and what it all meant. I hope there’s a sequel!
wow! this book surprised me a lot, after seeing a few average/ slightly negative reviews on goodreads i didnt expect to love this book as much as i did!!
this was a super fast read, i flew through it in about an hour. partly because its quite short, but mostly because i couldnt get enough of it!! i loved the plot twist, however i DID see it coming from a mile away! i dont think its obvious at all tho, just a theory that popped into my head that ended up being correct!
i absolutely love the way it was written, the vocabulary and sentence structure and everything! its hard to explain but it feels like it was written by me, LOL. this is exactly how i wouldve written this story!
easy 5 stars! i hope this book does well when its officially published!
A great, thrilling read, which will keep you entertained throughout. A good one sitting read, get the nibbles ready, close the door, and read!
Amazing book! I absolutely loved it! Exciting pàge after page it kept you guessing! Very fast read as I couldn't put it down. I highly recommend this book!
When Elle inherits her childhood home after her father dies, she has a lot of trepidation about returning. Finally, she and her boyfriend Dan, decide to fix it up. It doesn’t take long before Elle starts to think she is losing her mind. Is Dan not who he seems to be, or is there something darker at work?
Keep turning the pages of this thriller to see what happens next!
I quite enjoyed this. I had that strong feeling of dread and unease throughout the book. The protag, although she does say, think and do some silly things, I still found her quite likeable and enjoyed her narration. A nice quick read!
I absolutely devoured this! I’ve never read any of J.E. Rowney’s books before, but I certainly will now. I loved it. I was gripped from the beginning, and each chapter left me wanting more. For a book that has very few characters or settings, it certainly packs a punch. It left me guessing right until the very end, and I wasn’t disappointed.
Would definitely recommend.
Thank you to BooksGoSocial and Netgalley for advance e-copy of this book to read and review.

After the death of her father, Ella returns to Bittersweet Acres, her secluded childhood home. Hoping to start fresh with her boyfriend Dan, she makes plans to renovate and relocate there. Once settled in, however, she begins to experience strange noises, time lapses and handwritten notes.
Is she going crazy? Are the ghosts of her parents haunting the halls? Or is it her boyfriend, trying to control and take over her inheritance?
I enjoyed this quick read. It kept me guessing the entire time. As soon as I was convinced the story was going in one direction, I was quickly proven wrong.
Warning: Book discusses domestic violence and mental abuse.
Thank you to @NetGalley and @BooksGoSocial and the author for this eARC in exchange for my honest review!!
Great book that I stayed up late to finish. Ella is a young woman with a troubled past. Her new boyfriend Dan knows about it and is ok with it. When her dad suddenly dies and she is left the house that she grew up in she has misgivings about moving in it. Having money issues with rent she has no choice so they move in together.
When she hears things during the night and messages are left for her to find she soon regrets it.
Very enjoyable book to read.
Wow! this was a good book. I was on the fence about whether or not to read it. The last book I read by J.E. sounded good but fell flat for me. This was great! It was shorter which i think is good when you want to hold the reader's attention. Good suspense! Although I didn't think the ending would be quite what it was it kept me guessing!
This book was too short! It is a really compelling story which leaves you wondering who to believe but, most of all, it leaves you wanting to know more. There is a lot to the main character and I could happily have read more about her. Perhaps there is more to come from this talented author?
"Gaslight" J.E. Rowney is a psychological thriller. It is mostly written in the first person. Our heroine talks about her life. We can read what she thinks and feels at any moment. There's not much dialogue, but that didn't bother me. Our heroine is Ella. When she was 18, she ran away from home. She hoped never to go back there. A few years later, she made a life for herself. She works, lives and has a boyfriend, Dan. She gets sad news. Her father died and she inherited the house from him. What should she do now? At that point, I wondered why she ran away from home. What happened? I wasn't happy when I found out the truth. At the insistence of her boyfriend, she accepted this house. What she finds there is pure madness. She didn't know if she could trust herself. I was worried about her. The author did a great job of capturing our emotions. The ending is a real bomb. This is what I didn't expect. I created my ending to this story in my head. A plus for the author. The whole story is a real gem. If you like psychological thrillers, you can't miss "Gas Light". At times I was terrified, just like the main character. I liked her. Congratulations to the author of this work.
I recommend this unique book, mommy_and_books.
Ps.
I recommend reading it at night. You will get interesting effects and even greater emotions.
What happened at Bittersweet Acres?
My rating 10/10
this book was amazing!! i wasnt expecting that ending and it will have you in shock! this book was very descriptive and the whole time i was reading it, a movie of it was playing in my mind. thats just amazing. this was a good thriller/mystery and a very unexpted ending! if you love thrillers and mystery, this is a perfect book for you!
When Ella finds out that her father recently passed away, she does not want to return to her childhood home. This is where her father abused her by subjecting her to years of trauma. But revenge is a powerful motivator. Her partner Dan convinces her to take over the property and to make repairs. But soon things take a twisted turn and Ella fears that she is losing her mind. IF she can't trust herself who can she trust.
This book was amazing and had a plot twist that I didn't see coming. I thought it was a fast read. Cannot wait to read more from the author.
I have enjoyed previous books by this author so was happy to be added to the arc team and get a copy of this. It was a very fast paced book from the start and I was drawn in. The MC is confident from the start that her boyfriend is gaslighting her - a term meaning making someone believe they are crazy and imagining things. Things keep happening which makes Ella question her partner. It becomes explosive at the end, but are things as they always appear?
From the title I was hooked! Right through to the end. I was never sure who was believable and who wasn't. Highly recommended.
I really enjoyed the writing, the characters, just everything about this book. Highly recommend. Look forward to more from this author.
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
I didn’t think I would enjoy Gaslight. The black and white cover didn’t thrill me and the title didn’t entice me. But, it was next on my NetGalley list so I downloaded it onto my Kindle and started to read. And then, I couldn’t stop reading. I finished Gaslight that same day. I was sucked into the storyline and I loved it.
I really enjoy the unreliable narrator POV because I feel that the twists are typically harder to foresee and that was the case with this book. I hadn’t even considered the ending and I was pleased with the execution of the final twist.
I loved the tension and suspense. I had no idea who was to blame or what was really going on and it was fabulous! It was a true page turner and I highly recommend it to anyone that likes thrillers.
And the full color cover is absolutely beautiful!!
Kept my interest for sure. I just kept wondering what was real!?! Who did what?!?! I always love a book that makes you feel like you’ve been gaslighted. This one even had it in the title.
I really enjoyed reading Gaslight. It's about a woman, Ella, whose dad dies and leaves her the family house, where she was tormented as a child. Ella and her boyfriend move into the house and then things start happening to Ella. I liked how each chapter ended making me want to keep reading. I also liked the twist that I didn't see coming. I did find that after the twist, the story seemed to be a little slower. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Estranged from her father,Ella inherits her childhood home Bittersweet Acres after his death. Reluctantly at her boyfriend Dan’s insistence they move into the family home but soon strange and mysterious things begin to happen and Ella starts suspecting Dan’s true motive behind the move
Gaslight by J.E.Rowney is a quick , entertaining read with a plot twist I didn't see coming.
I would like to thank BooksGoSocial & NetGalley for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest and fair review.
After being notified of her mentally abusive father’s death, Ella is told she has inherited his estate, Bittersweet Acres. The home is filled with the traumatic memories of her mother’s death and her father’s abuse, and Ella’s first instinct is that she doesn’t want it. Her boyfriend Dan convinces her that she should claim it, telling her since the property is paid in full, if they move in together and save both rents, they could slowly save for the renovations the entire homestead needs. Reluctantly, even though everything in her screams not to do it, she agrees. Everything in the home is exactly as she remembers it, only further dilapidated. She sees the same old furniture she remembers, the “security” bars on the windows, the locks on the doors, and spends her first night back and in her parents’ old bedroom and bed, restless and sleepless. Then she begins to hear footsteps at night, and in the morning finds her lunch is gone, nothing left but an empty container. She confronts Dan and is angry at his denial that it wasn’t him. Since it is just the two of them and Ella knows it wasn’t her, who else could it be? The footsteps come again that night, and in the morning she finds half of her lunch sandwich missing along with the first note. Again she blames Dan, and he denies it. Obviously the old house is very dangerous for her. Ella is physically and mentally exhausted and traumatized, but Dan insists he is innocent and only wants to help and protect her...but does he?
This well-written book is penned in an ominous voice, compelling the reader onward. The feeling of gaslighting is exceptionally pervasive, and the pages turn effortlessly until the resolution. It is easy for the reader to assume either Ella is becoming increasingly unhinged as a result of moving back to Bittersweet Acres or that Dan is a master of gaslighting; after all, before they moved in together they were “only messing around” and so we know as little about him as Ella does. It was very easy to not put two and two together to figure out what was happening when the reader is totally engrossed in reading in anticipation of what will happen next. We learn that the final traumatic event is the one that saves her life. After the twist in the reveal, it was plain in hindsight, but while reading, the reader really is trying to find out which one of the couple is the cause or if the turn will be supernatural, especially with Ella’s constant denial of belief in such things. I felt that the ending did not live up to the standard and tone set by the rest of the novel. After that twist and the ride the reader takes to get there, it feels almost…empty. I’d love to see the ending tweaked a bit to be as exciting to read as the rest of the story, and give Ella and Dan the ending they both deserve.
I’d like to thank NetGalley, J.E. Rowney, and Little Fox Publishing for the ability to read and review this ARC.
I enjoyed this book, it was a shorter read but I enjoy that sometimes and it was a lovely well written book, with a easy plot line. I would give it 4 stars and recommend this book. I was pulled in this book and finished within a couple of days.
Very good book! New to me author and really liked the story telling! Looking forward to more by this author! Highly recommend it!
This is a did-he-didn't he story constructed so well it had me watching both hands and ignoring the feet. It's suspenseful, irritating and genuine, to the point where you empathise with every character involved. Well done, and thanks for the read!
I love anything with gaslighting and I devoured this novel by J.E. Rowney. Can't wait to read more by this author.
This book really took me on a rollercoaster ride. At first, I couldn't believe that Ella actually moved back to Bittersweet Acres after her fathers death, and I also didn't understand why her boyfriend wasn't being more understanding and supportive of her feelings. At times, I questioned my own sanity as well as Ella's, and could almost feel her confusion and frustration through the text. I have to say that I am a little disappointed by the ending, although I do believe that it is the more "normal" ending for someone who experiences these things.
This was a very quick and suspenseful read. I really enjoyed the horror/haunted house feel to the story. I thank Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.
I really enjoyed this book, it was well written with a great plot line. I would give it 5 stars and definitely recommend this book. I was drawn into book from the start and kept me on edge until the very end.
Ella is returning home after the death of her father. She’s inherits bittersweet acres (loved the name) this is my first book by J E Rowney and will not be my last. she writes her characters so well I feel like o actually know them. I enjoy the twisted at the end. It’s a nice easy read. The ending was unique.

Is the house haunted? A brilliantly written gripping thriller with a twist at the end.
I was intrigued by the title, cover design and description, so I was excited to read and review this.
This didn't take me long to finish, but it was a very good psychological thriller. I found it quite eerie, even chilling at times.
I was drawn in from reading the first paragraph. The protagonist talked to the reader in a way that encouraged them to relate to her, and feel compassion. I was gripped and kept turning the pages until the end.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for a free copy to review.
Ella moves back to her childhood home after finding out that her father died. Ella hopes she can make peace with all the trauma she endured there but when creepy notes start turning up unexpectedly Ella starts to spiral.
A but if a slow burner but it was quite short so I still flew through it. My first book by this author and I was pleasantly surprised.
The premise of this book is right up my alley! I absolutely loved the mixture of psychological thriller and horror that this book had. It had everything I love in a book.
Thank to netgalley for the chance to read this book.
Ella’s dad has passed away and she must return to the family home with her husband Dan to allow her to move forward and put her traumatic past behind her. Her starts to discover strange notes and her behaviour becomes erratic. She thinks Dan is responsible for the events that affect her mental and physical health. Dan says he is trying to protect her but nothing is as it seems.
Quick and entertaining read that I devoured in one sitting. The twists, who do you believe, who do you trust when mysterious things happen etc. Definitely a page turner.

Thanks first must go to Netgalley, the publisher and J.E. Rowney for the ARC of ‘Gaslight’.
Lover of J.E. Rowney and Gaslight didn’t disappoint. Another well written gripping thriller, slightly shorter than others but absolutely worth the read. Brilliant story, very twisty and leaves you guessing!

I beg your pardon!?! What was this insanity I read! Talk about an absolute mind blowing crazy psychological thriller. A quick read, that doesn't hold back on the mind-twists. The whole time you're on the edge of your seat, trying to figure out where Rowney is going with this and then BAM-thank you ma'am! That ending is unbelievable and still leaves you wondering IF it really is what it is. Rowney knows how to cause such uncertainty and doubt in a plot that even you start to wonder what's true or real. I still wonder if that ending was the real answer. And those are my favourite types that still leave me guessing & wondering. This was one mind fluffer upper I adored! Can the answer be so simple? I'll let you decide that. 😉
Thank you to NetGalley & BooksGoSocial for this ARC!

She believes he knows more about her past than he lets on and is determined to destroy her.
Will Ella find out the truth and escape Bittersweet Acres once again?
Gaslight was a pleasant surprise in the Thriller genre. I was not expecting as many turns of events or twists.
The book was very well written and descriptive. Giving readers the ability to put themselves there, within the story itself.
Readers will enjoy trying to piece together the storyline and find out if the truth/culprit is who they actually believe it to be, or will they be surprised by the ending?
This is a brilliant read.
Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start.
Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable.
Great suspense and found myself second guessing every thought I had continuously.
Can't wait to read what the author brings out next.
Recommend reading.
I was provided an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher. This is my own honest voluntary review.
I really liked this book, as you read it you think one thing and then the twist comes and it completely turns what you thought you were reading about on it's head. I love books like this, ones that keep you guessing, wondering what is going to happen. The author really did a great job with the characters, they are relateable and defined, you can really relate to what is happening in the plot. It had me hating one character, loving one and then at the end my feelings changed and I was blown away. It was a great book and I can't wait to see what this author puts out next
If this book doesn't leave you paranoid I don't know what will.
I was constantly looking behind me and it really messes with your head.
All the marks of a page turning physcological thriller.
A captivating psychological thriller that keeps readers on the edge of their seats with its engaging plot and characters. 'Gaslight' delves into the complex dynamics of manipulation and trust.
Overall, I really enjoyed this dark, chilling, well-plotted story. It was intense and fast paced and I raced through this in a few hours, frantically turning the pages, desperate to find out how it was all going to be resolved. With that dramatic ending, I wasn’t disappointed! I’m already looking forward to the author’s next book.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book. I have chosen to write this honest review voluntarily and it reflects my personal opinion.
The book starts as Ella is told her father has died, and her new boyfriend thinks it could be a good idea to benefit from inheriting her family home. Ella clearly has a background full of unhappiness and secrets and from the moment she and Dan move to Bittersweet Acres suspense is built so that I felt Ella's terror through every page. I was riveted from the start and this short book kept me enthralled right to the end, I've signed up to follow this author.
