The Who, What, Why of Zoology by Jules Howard is an informative and interesting nonfiction children’s book about what it means to be a zoologist. This book is very well written packed with interesting information, colorful illustrations, and facts for all the future zoologists out there. My middle child (7) wants to be a zoologist when they grow up and I can’t wait to get a copy of this book into their hands. Beautifully done.
My niece wants to be a veterinarian when she gets older. When I seen this book I knew she would love it. I was right. However, not only did she learn something, so did I. I never knew there were giant armadillos. It led to us looking them up online and learning even more. If your child loves to learn, this book is for them. It teaches the different areas and climates. It teaches the different animals in each climate and how zoologists work in the areas. It touches base on how humans have caused the decline in some species and how zoologists are working to bring them back from the brink of extinction. The pictures are a great way to show what zoologists do to help the environment. I asked her what she wanted to rate the book and she gave it 5 stars. I think I've created a monster, she wants to see what other books we can find about animals.
Thank you to NetGalley, Quarto publishing group - Wide Eyed editions, and Jules Howard for the opportunity to read this ARC.
Perfect for anyone interested in Zoology. Reviews the history of the science, describes in detail ecosystems, animals and plants found in each ecosystem, accessibility of zoology and how to get into it/different jobs there are available.
Beautiful illustrations and descriptions!
This is such a beautiful illustrated book. It was full of information and interesting facts but fun to read. Me and my niece loved it. We learnt so much about animals. I can express how beautiful this book each page was amazing. We spent time taking it all in looking for different animals. It’s such a lovely book for children and adults. I was so impressed and can not wait to buy it in paper back. I have already put it on the list to buy for family members. This book is definitely one to read. It’s beautiful full of great information about Zoology and a fun book to look at too.
I would say the artists have done a very good job in the representation in such picture books normalising people of multicultural backgrounds. It’s so thoughtful.
The book is an introduction to zoology and what zoologists do. It also features different aspects of the subject and gives enough useful information on the ecosystem.
I would say read this along with the young readers on multiple sittings for a better overview and understanding.

Kiddo (8) loved this book about the many things zoologists do, the animals and environments they study. He's into animals lately, and eternally into science books, so this one was a great fit for us. He listened intently and requested we read more whenever I stopped to breathe.
The layout of the book is very nice. It has a lot of illustrations with information bubbles scattered around the pages explaining what each scientist pictured is doing and studying. It also offers a lot of information about the biomes that each animal is found in -- that's how the book is divided, by biome rather than by chapter. The text is readable and broken into bite-sized chunks that are easy for elementary-school readers to digest.
We both learned a lot and were kept invested throughout. Definitely recommend for elementary school science classrooms and libraries, and any kids who are interested in science and/or animals.

This book is exactly what I would have wanted, as a child. Full of wonderful facts, fabulous illustrations, and lots of inspiration for budding young zoologists - there is so much to see, learn, and talk about. Even as an adult, I learnt a lot from this book! I can imagine many fantastic conversations and new dream jobs stemming from this book.
