What a thrilling whirlwind that throws you into the deep end and keeps the pace going as quickly as it can. This is one heck of a young adult mystery read and you won’t be disappointed.
I very much enjoyed Rebecca Barrow's 'Bad Things Happen Here' (twists, corruption, intrigue - it is a great read!) and so I was excited to get to read 'And Don't Look Back'. Boy, am I glad that I did as Barrow has stepped everything up a notch for this incredible read. The tragic beginning of the story is brutal and painful but draws you into Harlow's world. Ever since she can remember, Harlow and her mother have been running. They will up and leave a place with no notice with so much frequency that the process of changing identity is now second nature to them both. Only this time, Harlow's mother dies in a horrific car accident, leaving Harlow alone in the world. What were they running from all these years? And is the only way to end it to face up to a traumatic past?
I loved this. Trust me when I saw you will NEVER see the truth behind the reason for the secrecy coming. Even up until the last page, Barrow is so skilled at laying the groundwork for what you think you know and then just pulling the rug from beneath you. It is difficult to give any story details without revealing the literal and metaphorical road Harlow goes down following her mother's death. I can vaguely say that the characters Harlow meets are dangerous, twisted and all keeping secrets - it is gripping. We also get some flashback insights into the past but nothing in these is ever as it seems.
You are in safe hands with Barrow penning a thriller. This is gripping and making me long for whatever Barrow will produce next! 5 stars.
