Description
Fear wears many skins.
Deep within the Canadian wilderness, people have been disappearing for over a century. There is a place the locals call “The Devil’s Woods,” but to speak of it will only bring the devil to your door. It is a place so evil that even animals avoid it.
When their father’s expedition team goes missing, Kyle Elkheart and his brother and sister return to the abandoned Cree First Nation reserve where they were born. Kyle can see ghosts that haunt the woods surrounding the village—and they seem to be trying to warn him. The search for their father will lead Kyle and his siblings to the dark heart of the legendary forest, where their mission will quickly become a fight for survival.

This is an immensely enjoyable horror story steeped in Native American folklore. It has everything you could want in a horror book: small isolated town surrounded by woods, weird town folks whose true intentions are unknown, and terrifying creatures that inhabit the woods seeking human prey.
There are also secrets to be found as the story progresses and that's always a good thing to see. Certain characters are going to shock you when the truth comes out and the truth about this town itself is horrifying.
I enjoyed the book because the first third set up the characters and situation. After that, all bets are off as things take a frightening bloody turn.
There is a romantic angle in here that I didn't really care for but that's just my own personal thing. I don't really like romance in my horror. But I think a lot of people will be fine with it.
Still, this is a rip roaring banger of a novel that keeps the chills coming and the blood flowing! I highly recommend it.
4.5 stars
This book was phenomenal. I read it in a single sitting. It was creepy and engaging. I didn’t realize going in that this is a re-release of an older novel. Same title though so dont worry.
Brian Moreland is such a great author as is, so I highly recommend this book as well as his others.
Absolutely amazing. Once I started reading I couldn't put it down so I finished in one night.
Perfect level of spooky and thrilling creating a tense and detailed atmosphere.
This is one of the most scintillating, eerie and downright terrifying novels I've ever read! And the twist revealing one of the lead villains was something I never saw coming, and so shocking that I gasped out loud. I will definitely be recommending this book and will be searching for more from the author. Five stars!
I had already read this book before, but I gave it a re-read. A good, spooky tale. This author is very talented and I have read all.his books so far. This is probably my favorite.
I loved it couldn't put it down, had my attention from page one it has plenty of action, and paranormal aspects in it. Would totally recommend to anyone who loves a good thriller book
This begins with deeply menacing woods, darkness and a deadly presence. Kyle Elkheart, the last of the descendants of the Cree First nation, returns to his homeland to find his missing father. With his siblings, he returns to his childhood home and seeks answers and a resolution to the haunting woods and missing people, archaeologists who vanished there, including his father. Churning up the past and unearthing new terrors along the way the ghosts of the past are not the only things stalking the dark and deadly landscape. Truly tense and at times terrifying, this tale leads you into your deepest fears of things going bump in the night. Hauntingly deep and powerful on a lot of levels, this is an emotional journey that is not likely to every end well. I loved this and highly recommend! An experience that is a real eye opener.
Great read. Fast paced and I enjoyed the folklore. The author does a great job creating atmosphere.
This book was such a fun ride! I loved the Native American folklore and focus on family. The characters were well developed and there were definitely a couple of twists I did not see coming. The action helped to keep good pacing throughout and then propelled forward enough to make me anxious in the last 80% of the book. The cave… OMG. That’s all I say about that. I enjoyed the ending immensely. I will definitely be reading more from this author.
I have never written a review as soon as I finished a book but Brian Moreland's The Devil's Woods is the exception! I can't even begin to describe my feelings. I am still reeling from the ending!
The story grabbed me from the first page and did not let go. When I wasn't reading it, I was thinking about it and longing for the moment I could pick it up again. For a story that had Native American lore, ghosts, creatures, monsters, demons, serial murderers, and weird religion stuff, among many other things, the balance between them is phenomenal and nothing feels out of place. The character development is superb. I felt like I got to know each character well enough to be emotionally invested in their fate, regardless if I wanted them to meet a terrible demise, or I was rooting for them. The writing style was well paced and solid. I did spot a few grammatical and spelling errors but it didn't affect my enjoyment of the story.
This was my first book by Brian Moreland and I am already looking forward to reading more from him! If you are a horror fan and don't mind gory/gruesome stories, please do yourself a favor and read this book. You will not be disappointed!
Absolutely loved this book!
It had everything in just the right measures: anxiety fuelling action, a compelling story steeped in Native American folklore, great chararacters, woodland horror with plenty of twists.
Definitely an author to look out for!
TW: Gore, violence & sexual assault
Enjoyable, unique premise that I found quite riveting. Mixing archeology with underground caves, the Cree Nations lore and Scandinavian mythos.
“In the shapes of man’s sins, fear wears many skins.”
Enjoyed the book more than I thought I would. The folklore was interesting snd added to the story. Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book
Kyle Elkhart is a famous writer and although still suffering from the loss of his wife Stephanie when his brother Eric comes to tell him not only is their dad missing but that their cousin Ray has something to give them something that their dad should’ve given them a long time ago Kyle is hesitant but ultimately agrees his dad going missing is status quo for the family but when they arrive and learn not only is their dad missing but the crew he took into The Devils Woods has also gone missing. Kyle has a second sense and can see ghosts and he has been haunted by a ghost in his apartment and fears and may have followed him to their Canadian reservation his brother brings his one of many girlfriends Jess on the trip and it doesn’t help that although Kyle hasn’t been looking for Love since the death of his wife two years before he feels an instant attraction to her. His baby sister Sonny and her new boyfriend Zack also come along for the ride he is a drummer and her band and they’ve been together a month but Kyle doesn’t question that he loves his sister and couldn’t wait to see her. Before it’s over however it will be more than just his dad and his dad‘s assistant who they search for those who don’t believe in ghosts and demons will become believers it is all life and death and Kyle Will learn and uncover the secret those on his reservation has been keeping in the terror they have encouraged. This is such a good book and although it is a reralease lease it is still current the story flows and I thought it was a great horror story. It stayed interesting with no lol moments and if you love great horror then you’ll love “the devil‘s woods” by Brian Moreland it is straight up horror where at first you go what was that? All the way to what is that? The theater is heightened as the story goes along and I love when books do that and think the author did it perfectly. What a great book! I received this book from NetGalley and the publisher but I am leaving this review voluntarily please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.
An excellent horror that made me think of Stephen Graham Jones and kept on the edge and reading.
Well plotted, dark, gripping.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine
Quite a nice read, I'd say. I am not sure, what I was expecting but Brian Moreland did not disappoint me really. I was engrossed in the story from the first words. His characters are real and well written. He did make me gasp a few times out of surprise. So yeah, it was a nice read!
I'll definitely recommend it !
This book was everything I wanted it to be! Great writing, creepy atmosphere, making you feel like you’re part of the story. It was great
This book was such a fun ride! I loved the Native American folklore and focus on family, plus give me a book set anywhere in Canada and as a Canadian I am overjoyed. The characters felt well fleshed out and there were even some twists I didn't exactly see coming. The action helped to keep good pacing throughout and then propelled forward enough to make me anxious in the last 80% of the book. I enjoyed the ending immensely and thought the story closed out well. I will definitely be reading more from this author.
What a spooky, frightening jaunt in the woods! This was a great book that will make you afraid to read it in the dark!
Full of a spooky unknown, mixing with folklore, this one had me shaking in my boots from start to finish. I highly suggest this one for anything in for a good horror/thriller. I also loved that this one was located in the backwoods of British Columbia.
I picked this book up on a whim because I saw the words 'canadian wilderness' and ''disappearance' in the same sentence.. and after having finished the book I have to say - what a good choice! I loved the Native American folk lore, the cultish religious stuff, the murdering, the spookiness, the wilderness. The characters were developed enough that I cared about them and their fate and the pacing was such that I never felt the need to put the book down during boring parts because there weren't any! And that final chapter.. ouuuu spooky. Definitely a must read author for me now.
Brian Moreland pulls it off yet again. I have loved a lot of his work. This was a thrill ride and a half. Think scary creatures, fantastic realistic characters, tension, suspense and a fast paced plot. What more do you want right? The chill factor is there and plenty of unexpected turns to keep you on your toes. I love his dark mind and imagination. A writer who deserves a lot mite exposure and credit. His writing gets better and better. Highly recommended this, I could not put it down and check out his other books too. I’m a firm fan of this horror writer. Loved it!
Wow. First time reading Brian Moreland, and I really enjoyed this book. Grabbed me right from the first chapter. Really Developed characters, with a great story and pacing (couldn't put it down). Will definitely be reading more from Brian Moreland. #TheDevilsWoods #NetGalley
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
Another great horror novel by Brian Moreland.
Creepy and adventurous at the same time as they go on the hunt for their missing father and find more than they bargained for.
I’ve enjoyed other books by this author and this one was great as well.
I am always drawn to horror that takes place in the woods. The author did a great job of keeping the horror and suspense building and building until you start to feel your skin crawling and goosepimples rising. Would reccomend to anyone who enjoys a good book!
Folk horror is one of my favorites of the horror genre. I love reading about the story behind the legend. Reading about how long something has been part of an area fills me with dread. I am so anxious while reading but somehow I cannot stop myself. As I read this book, I felt the woods closing in around me. Just reading that Kyle and his family were unaware of what lurked in the woods was terrifying enough but to then read the description of what they were up against would for me, be the time to exit. The battle scenes were harrowing as i could feel the claws swipe by my head. I definitely would heed any warnings that i came across if it said “do not enter.”
