Successful thief Romy finds herself with a deal she can’t refuse, mostly down to the bloodbath that cleared her debt to the crime boss she’s been working for, do one job for the mysterious Sofie and steal a stone from a secret garden and she’s free… but Romy finds herself in a strange new world full of magic and creatures she believed only myth.
I found this one a bit slow paced and it did have a little bit of a tendency to info dump however the world building was really in-depth so that’s forgivable.
I found the characters really compelling and I love a slow burn enemies to lovers and this was no exception. I loved the interactions between Zander and Romy and the delicate manoeuvring required to build their trust and relationships.
The side characters were also brilliant with a dash of humour that provided a much needed lift.
There’s a lot to digest with this book and I can’t wait to see where it goes it book 2.
Political intrigue, sexual tension, slow burns, the most perfect enemies to lovers and swoony Kings! I knew going into this I'd probably enjoy it (I'm a huge fan of Tucker's contemporary books) but I did NOT realise how obsessed I would become. I actually fell asleep on the sofa because I had to stay up late to finish this book!
So in this book we have Romy, a gifted thief, who is pulled into another realm by a mysterious woman called Sofie. The only warning she gets is to keep her identity a secret, with no mention of the fact that the body she has woken up in has murdered the royal family and is now fated to be burnt alive at the stake. With no choice she must try to convince the new King-a man who has been betrayed terribly by the previous owner of her body and now despises her-that she can help him uncover the traitor in his court. But with no way home, and danger lurking in every shadow, how will Romy survive in this new world? And can she still go through with her ruse when she uncovers the dark secret the King is hiding from her?
Now this book does have a slow start, I think it took me until about the 15% mark to get properly invested (basically when Romy leaves the boring normal world behind 🤣), but after that I can truly say I loved every second! Romy was an absolute delight, she's such a smartass character, but she also knows when to hold her tongue. There is so much danger around her and she's so careful (but also can't help herself around a certain King). Their banter was pitch perfect.
I can't wait to read the other books in this series!
Many thanks to Del Rey and Netgalley for the ARC.
I went into this book not really knowing what to expect. And wow was I amazed at how quickly I became obsessed with it!
A Fate of Wrath & Flame by K.A Tucker is the first book in a trilogy about a young woman called Romy, a professional thief working for the darkest of people in the heart of New York City. During one of her typical jobs, she’s approached by a mysterious woman who thrusts her into an alternate world known as, Cirilea. A place filled with magic, immortals, and beings Romy can barely understand. When awake in this new world, she finds herself inhabiting the body of a Princess Romeria. Being accused of murdering the King and Queen.
Now, Romy, with the stern help of the now King Zander, must learn to master this new world and her new bodies capabilities, whilst also fighting those who wish this Princess dead, and her confusing, yet alluring relationship with Zander.
Admittedly, the first chapter of this book threw me off slightly, me being unsure as to where this book was going to go. But it soon took off, with mystery, danger, magic, and romance, this book and the first in it’s trilogy, is the perfect set up and has left the series open to so much more! I couldn’t put this book down. Every spare chance I’ve had, has been spent with these characters.
The universe Tucker has built is both familiar and unique in its own way, merging many of the best fantasy factors into one place. I would recommend this book to any fantasy genre lover. It is truly amazing and I cannot wait to find out what Romy, Zander, Elisaf and Wendeline do next!
This is my first book by this author but it sure won't be my last!
Everything was perfect, even the info dumping haha
Can't wait to read more of this series!
Thanks for the ARC Penguin Random House
Enjoyed the book, though it was quite heavy on info dump, which made the book less interesting and the pace suffered because of that. Overall, the story was interesting and the characters were fleshed out and felt real.
I really loved the storyline of this book with the ties from modern to the classic fae courts! Such a good read and I am excited to carry on the story!
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for early access to this book!
Thanks so much to Netgalley and Random House UK for allowing me to have an e-arc copy of this book!
It was my first time reading anything by K.A Tucker and I thought it was great!
The book starts off showing a thief from New York getting approached from a strange woman asking her to help her and her husband. Little does she know, the decision to help will change her life forever. She gets thrown into another world, where she knows no-one but everyone seems to know her.
I loved the storytelling in this book, and loved the build up of the political intrigue. It is a slow burn, enemies to lovers (my personal favourite) fantasy romance with a riveting storyline, filled
with politics and a quest given by the ‘gods’. It has mystery, suspense and continuous twists and turns.
I also loved the massive variety of characters this book shows, and their struggles within the society they were born into. I loved watching the budding romance form between Romy and Zander, but it leaves us on a cliffhanger… is it going to stay that way?? This book shows some themes of slavery and death, so please be warned before reading. Corrin was my personal favourite character and I can’t wait to see what happens to her in the next book!
I was utterly hooked and could not put this book down, and cannot wait to read the next one in the series! Would highly recommend to any romantasy readers out there!
4.5⭐
K.A. Tucker appears to be the queen of variety when it comes to writing fiction. I've read her contemporary romance, which is amazing, and now I've read her fantasy novels which were also amazing.
Once I began A Fate of Wrath and Ruin, I reached the 20% mark and fell in love with her characters, plot and writing and immediately ordered paperback copies of this book as well as book 2. I never do that. That's why my review is late because I insisted on finishing it with a physical copy. And the gorgeous covers make it even better as well.
At first, we are introduced to husband and wife Elijah and Sofie in 1739. Totally in love and always in fear of death, the two move around a lot until something confronts them, and they're forced to leave again. At first glance, it appears they, especially Sofie, are some sort of witches. We find out Sofie had a dear friend that was killed, so the two live in the moment and their love. That is until Sofie wakes to Elijah dying, disappearing to a mysterious place. She vows to get her husband back.
Romeria, or as she's known in her work as Tarryn or Tee, is a thief. Indebted to an awful criminal after attempting to steal something from him, Romy is under his control. Her father is a mentally ill homeless man who doesn't appear to be lucid when she speaks with him.
When she's on a job, a mysterious woman who knows all about her employment proposes a different job opportunity for her. Restricted to her criminal boss, she declines this offer and leaves the lavish party.
After finding her boss dead, as well as his henchmen, the mysterious woman, Sofie, whisks Romy away to her mansion, where she's given the immediate task of returning her husband to her.
What ensues is a mind-bending turn of events that features politics, romance, self-discovery and fantasy. This isn't romance heavy. It is definitely slow-burn, but there's a reason for that which I won't ruin. I'm excited to see how the relationship develops in book 2. The reason I knocked half a star off is at one point, there is a huge amount of info dumping about the setting, which honestly lost me. I wanted to understand, but wow, a lot was told all in one go. It's a slow story that is building up steadily, so book 2 is a must for anyone wanting to continue Romeria's journey.
Thank you for the eARC. I thoroughly enjoyed this.
