Description
Winner of the 2023 Firebird Book Awards in both the Dark Fantasy and Paranormal categories.
Malfus is a rogue necromancer with nothing to his name except his spellbook.
Forced to leave his old life behind, he finds himself starving and alone in a strange land.
His luck turns a corner when he stumbles across a body-strewn battlefield—but buzzards and crows aren’t the only creatures interested in his find.
As night falls and the mists grow, will his necromancy be enough to face what waits for him in the dark?
This is a prequel short story, introducing the grimdark fantasy novel Malfus: Necromancer Unchained. You can enjoy this story by itself; it is not necessary reading for the novel. The book also includes a world-map as well as two full-color illustrations of scenes from the upcoming novel, drawn by artist Dejan Delic.

Greedy as a Ghoul by Casey Sutton serves as a prequel to the forthcoming novel Malfus: Necromancer Unchained. Malfus has abandoned the comfort of the academy and his dream of becoming a mage to improve his skills as a necromancer. Necromancy has been outlawed in his region, so he travels to the far-flung reaches of Monrovia to research the dark arts and learn everything possible about the secret of overcoming death. Malfus is in urgent need of money for food, lodgings, and supplies. A recent battle scene provides him with an opportunity to use his developing talents and scavenge for money and provisions. When a ghoul shows up, his abilities are put to the test as he fights for his life.
Casey Sutton immerses readers in a world of dark arts and ghastly creatures in this short story. The brief introduction to Malfus allows readers to get a feel for his character and understand the reason behind his desperate need to perfect his necromancy skills. Even the author’s lesser descriptions seem relevant as they represent hidden clues about the plot for Malfus: Necromancer Unchained. This book moves along at a fast pace, leaving the reader eager for the full-length sequel. Sutton provides a map to introduce Ossoria and the Scar and includes two scenes from the next book to tease readers. Greedy as a Ghoul is a great start to a promising story and will attract readers who enjoy dark worlds.

Very fun quick read. Has me excited for the full release coming up and I will definitely be getting that once it comes out. Funny and bloody when it needs to be and takes barely any time to get through at all.
Casey Sutton does an great Job with with making a short story draw you in and make you want more!
I found this to be one the best self-published fantasy books I've read in a long time.
Nothing in the story felt forced. Malfus with his slightly comedic situations and sarcastic internal dialogue, caused me to chuckle & appeared so natural. He was real, and so much was revealed but simultaneously so little as well.
The haphazard adventures of a self-taught necromancer trying to find his way in a world that hates & outlawed his study, looks for a way to further research to accomplish his ultimate goal.
Sutton took an old magic & puts a fresh spin on it, making it seem new. His newness using it, makes you believe there's so much more that is in store for its use.
Then there are the illustrations & Maps....both Very cool! I'm genuinely excited by the full book and I read Alot of fantasy. If this is any Indication of how his next novel plays out, you'll find a longtime fan! Bravo!
A well-written storyline screamed an exciting tale of a necromancer, zombies and ghouls. For a prequel of a novel soon to be released, it had all the earmarks of an intense, adrenaline-filled adventure, beginning to end.
I really enjoyed this preview into the world of Malfus - a necromancer in a world where necromancy is not only illegal but punishable by death. He has left/escaped from an acaedmy teaching him to wield his powers and carrying a piece of an old lover/friend with him on his journey! There ae a lot of questions raised by this book which is good as it makes me want to find out more information regarding the world and Malfus himself. It was a fast paced often gruesome introduction to the world and I want to know more.
