This short guide is chock-full of information on emotional eating including recognizing physical hunger and our emotional eating triggers, how emotional eating affects us mentally (such as guilt and shame), knowing what to do about it and leaning on God instead of food. But there is so much more. Our bodies are adversely affected and we gain weight and develop GI and muscle issues. Unhealthy relationships with food affect our walk with God.
Mindless eating is an empty pursuit. We often don't even notice what and how much we eat, often eating beyond getting full. Plus healthy eating doesn't cause guilt. Anxiety, stress, fear and boredom are some reasons we overeat.
I like that each chapter includes Scripture and helpful bullet takeaways. As one who is at times an emotional eater, I am reminded to say no and the repercussions of emotional eating are serious. Seeking God is far more meaningful than seeking solace in food...and it doesn't satisfy, anyway.
My sincere thank you to BooksGoSocial and NetGalley for providing me with an early digital copy of this simple yet powerful book.
As a life long emotional overeater, I was interested to read this book. It is fairly short at 100 pages, so it can be read fairly speedily. It then bears a much slower read to help implement the advice given by the author. Each chapter begins with a verse of scripture and the book begins with distinguishing between emotional and physical hunger. A topic that is often overlooked by traditional slimming programmes. As the book progresses it looks at understanding the cause of emotional eating, recognising when you are falling into that pattern of consuming and carries on to help break the cycle. Emotional eating starts off as something that is comforting but often ends up as a cycle of self abuse leading the weight gain, ill health and feeling depressed.
The big plus with this book for me is that each chapter has a takeaway section with the most pertinent information. Particularly in Chapters 5 and 7 the author discusses how we can use this process to deepen our relationship with God. By seeking a closer connection with God we are better placed to take better care of the body that we have been given and stop seeking consolation in things that will never satisfy our soul.
I was given a free copy of this book by NetGalley to review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
