Description

It’s the swingin’ 70’s–a time of change, when singers sang about making life better by being there for others. Helen Reddy’s “I Am Woman” became an anthem for the women’s movement while other songs like Simon and Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Waters” offered comfort to people. This was a time for spreading peace and love.

In 1973, Wendy, a recently separated woman, discovers a new life when she starts her own business and becomes part of the bar scene. The once conservative Wendy makes major changes to her lifestyle, including her involvement with a number of men.

Wendy’s life becomes complicated with the different men she sees, combined with her estranged husband’s continual reappearance. She turns to drugs to help her relax and escape, creating a downward spiral that only her best friend can save her from.

Set in the 1970's, this women's fiction follows the story of a newly separated woman who enters the bar scene. With it she finds a new take on the world as well as drugs and men. When her ex-husband keeps showing up, she needs to find calm and tuns to drugs.
This sends her down a potentially destructive path, but her friend steps in to help her grow, learn, and appreciate the amazing woman she already is.
With vivid descriptions, great musical references, and some heartbreaking moments, author Horn creates characters that we cheer for and empathize with.

I received an ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Yikes. Shades of my teen years when the whole world went crazy on drugs, "free love," and other shedding of morality.

"Oh. I hope you find what you want."

"I hope so too."

Those two phrases describe a woman's quest for purpose and meaning after her divorce in the 1970s. In the process of undoing her expectations, she falls into the trap of quick fixes, transitioning through multiple partnerships, and drug experimentation. Working through her emotions, Wendy depends on her nursery business, her relationships, and her friend Cindy.

It's a book that reminds me of the search for self and the desire to make a difference outside of the world of faith. When you have only yourself to depend on, it's a hard path.
