You don’t need to be a climber, or even a hiker, to appreciate the beauty of mountains. As the author states, there isn’t even an official definition to distinguish them from hills. But the majestic pictures in this book are unquestionably mountains. Each chapter devoted to a geological area (mostly continents, although America is divided in North and South), this volume includes key details and gorgeous photographs of the highest, most beautiful and remarkable mountains. If your idea of a high peak includes snow, you’ll be surprised to find here some pictures of lush, green jungles. If your idea of Africa is flat plains, you’ll find high mountains too. There are plants, native fauna and even some buildings and humans. Seeing the tiny figures compared to the huge mountains is humbling and awesome. There are views from the highest summits and the lowest valleys, volcanoes, some active and closer to larger cities than you’d think, and even shots from space. I’m fascinated by mountains but I also know that I’d be hard-pressed to climb even a small hill so reading this book is the next best thing. Gorgeous!
