Description
I grew up in the 1950s, and my father, "Mac," filled our lives with humor, a love of reading, and the gift of adventure. The first ten years of my life seemed magical. He was my Yoda—dependable, witty, and wise. Then abruptly, Yoda was sidelined when Darth Vader became my stepfather. But Mac never quit being my father … a mentor, teacher, and role model.
Years later, I opened a time capsule that contained letters he wrote during WWII, commendations, news articles, and photos. I was stunned. Mac had been among a small group of young pilots trained to fly a new bomber—the B-24 Liberator with the 307th BG, and then the B-29 Superfortress with the 39th BG. Shot down on his first combat mission in Guadalcanal, he and his surviving crew spent three weeks navigating through enemy-infested islands. His service to his country spanned three wars.
Mac: The Wind Beneath My Wings is a compelling tale about a remarkable man. It grips the reader with his strength of character and fascinating career. WWII, Korea, and Vietnam veterans, history buffs, military devotees, and students of human nature will be inspired by this account told by an adoring daughter. Mac: The Wind Beneath My Wings, a biography of an extraordinary man, by Sherry Hobbs.
A Note From the Publisher
Advance Praise
"Far more than a wonderful telling of the life of a B-24 bomber pilot, this book is chock-full of detail and research into WWII. A must read for any who fancy aviator war stories." -Richard Johnson, World War II Enthusiast
"This book is a triumph." -MJV Literary
"Score Sherry Hobbs a bulls-eye for her incredible story, Mac: The Wind Beneath My Wings! Her stunning biography of her father's exploits as a bomber pilot in WWII weaves combat tension with historical airpower history-like Laura Hillenbrand's Unbroken met Malcolm Gladwell's The Bomber Mafia! They created the 5-star rank for George Marshall ... I might have to give Hobbs 6 stars!" -Cam Torrens, award-winning author of Stable and False Summit
"There's so much to love about this book. Imagine reading a tale unfolding page by page where everything is uncertain and nothing is settled-sure to capture the attention of any reader. Students of history and fans of the unconquerable human spirit will want to climb into their library cockpit for this must-read book." -Christopher Amato, author of Shadow Investigation

Mac: The Wind Beneath My Wings is the biography of Colonel Harold "Mac" G. McNeese written by his daughter Sherry Hobbs. This is an absolute must-read for anyone who is a 20th Century American military history buff. It follows Mac from growing up in the depression years to being one of the first to pilot B-24 and B-29 bombers to his service in the Korean and Viet Nam wars as well. Not only is history presented in an interesting and personal light, it is also the telling of a tale of one man who was a part of it all. Halfway through the book, the book takes a turn toward memoir, as his daughter Sherry Hobbs starts to weave in her own story as the child of a military man as well. The book is made all the more compelling with numerous photos, letters, and even telegrams. A strong five-stars.
