Description

ONCE UPON A TIME IN ATLANTA ...

After losing his dad, a teenager gains the ability to hear the music inside each human soul, allowing him to sense their emotions, see their past memories, and even manipulate their moods. Using his new gift, he vows to carry on his father's legacy and bring his killer to justice.

Stephen Kibwaa had a good life and good parents, even if they pushed him hard to do his best. As a gifted pianist, Stephen was sixteen when he was invited to the Georgia Dome to play the National Anthem—but after his show, a human trafficker only known as "The Marxman" murdered Stephen's dad during a failed kidnapping operation.

At his father's funeral, Stephen, in his sadness and anger, was gifted with a strange new ability: Suddenly, he was able to hear the song of the souls around him. As 10 years passed by, Stephen worked hard to develop and refine his power, strengthening his body and stopping other human traffickers along the way as Atlanta's shadowed superhero, Dizchord.

Now, the past comes back to taunt him as his father's killer, The Marxman, returns to Atlanta ...

With themes of grief and loss, duty and honor, and love and sacrifice, Dizchord is an original comic set in contemporary Atlanta that tackles issues surrounding family, human trafficking, and growing up from award-winning, genre-hopping author C. S. Johnson.

I’m not usually a comic book reader (that would be my husband), but I thoroughly enjoyed this one! C.S. Johnson has crafted an awesome new superhero that fights human trafficking with the power of music. Check it out and see for yourself!

CW: parental death, human trafficking

After the lose of his father, Stephen Kibwaa realizes that he has a power he didn’t have before. Now he can hear the song of the souls around him. Hearing their song gives him the ability to sense their emotions and see their past memories. With this new power, Stephen is determined to carry out his father’s legacy.

The coloring throughout this was wonderful. It really played into the emotions of the story and was lighten when it needed to be and darker other times. This really helped me to get into the feel of the story and feel what the characters were going through.

Now, this was one issue. It’s difficult to judge plot and characters in one issue. There is a lot of story here that is still waiting to be told.

Dizchord has a lot of potential. Stephen and his alter ego Dizchord are interesting. The superpower alone is creative and wonderful! It’s interesting to see how that works. The fact that he’s using his power to help stop human trafficking (as well as bring his father’s killer to justice), is amazing. There are also bits of information at the end where you can learn more about human trafficking, so the author is really trying to bring this issue to light. All in all, I’m curious about him.

The plot is also peeks my curiosity about where all it will end up going. This issue set it up the plot well, but did have some info dumping at times. There were some panels that had so much dialogue and information that it was a little overwhelming. I think some information could have been spread out through some issues and have a slower reveal of all the information.

Dizchord could really be a great series. I think it could easily drawn in a number of people. I think this could be a comic to watch.

Dizchord is a cool concept. I’d gladly share this with fans of the medium as well as those who are new or the form, and I’d gladly share this art and storytelling with students and fellow readers.
