Description

  • A collection of short stories that examines men's behaviour, and the moments when masculinity is on the edge of turning dangerous.
  • Features short stories involving the world of professional football as experienced by the author, offering a unique and often neglected perspective in fiction and media of how toxic an environment it can be.
  • Will appeal to fans of David Peace and Roddy Doyle.

We Aim to Live is a collection of fourteen powerful, dark and funny short stories, about ordinary people – mostly men – at moments of crisis, crossroads or revelation. The stories look unflinchingly at men’s behaviour and the moments when masculinity is on the edge of turning dangerous.

Some stories portray the toxic world of professional football drawing upon the writer’s past in that world; while others are set in high end hotels, removals firms and sheds.

Here, the issues of masculinity, class and the struggle with life’s small (and large) humiliations are all told in an authentic and utterly distinctive voice.

Featured Reviews

This collection of short stories pays focus to masculinity and behaviours portrayed in different scenarios, including the authors past within professional football.

This is actually not my usual sort of book, and when I think of football I think boring! However the authors past and challenges that were seen particularly in the second short story were very interesting, dark and highlighting. I absolutely encourage the author to write a full fiction novel of the ‘professional football’ world as it had me hooked and I want more! The writing is amazing, easy to understand and the author has talent!

This book above all else educates! I didn’t enjoy all of the stories but it’s enlightening to see different perspectives of life. I love the cover!

Thank you Negalley and John Budden for this ARC
