  • A book full of international locations, Italian cuisine, aviation and wry observations upon fate.

Artisan dressmaker, Caterina Mazzini, spends the day contemplating the intense love she feels for her partner, Barrett. Then she seduces a stranger in her own home! After a calamitous finale, she reflects wistfully upon her childhood in Salerno, Southern Italy, her old life in England, and the dramatic events which brought her six thousand miles from Berkshire to Johannesburg.

1982. A young Caterina gazes across the Tyrrhenian Sea; her spirit is stirred as she hold communion with the sea breeze. At college, her physics master, Professor Russo, teaches her about the white stork and the principles of flight. Out of school, she is taught about sex by Stefano, boyfriend of beautiful Juliana. Rina leaves Italy for the London suburbs and a career in aviation. She marries, but it isn’t long before her airline pilot husband strays. Her revenge is sweetly twisted. After a return to single life, Caterina’s world pivots during a near death experience. She meets Barrett and is smitten, but she cannot forsake her secret lover who she keeps hidden from everyone, even her best friend Emma. Rina juxtaposes the most important people in her life, and makes a plan which may resolve her complex situation.

Thank you to NetGalley, Jo Draxler, and the publisher for this ARC of A Single Breath of Air in exchange for an honest review!

I found this book to be a very interesting read! I believe this is a debut novel for Jo Draxler and I think it's well done. He is definitely a talented author and I enjoyed this story a lot! The book is broken up into parts, and I would say around part two or three was where I found that I was pretty invested in the story. Around then I realized that I wanted to keep turning the page, so much so that I was able to read the book in one night. I wouldn't say that it's a fast-paced novel exactly, but rather it's a novel that's easy to fall into and want to stay until the story is over!

A Single Breath of Air is the perfect book to turn to if you've had a bad day and need to escape into a dramatic story with love and friendship. Caterina is a good main character, and it's her life that we follow throughout this book. I love how she is with people, and I enjoyed reading about all the relationships she forms with her friends & lovers. I found that even though I can't exactly relate to her experiences, there's something very human about her that made her story and her connections with others throughout her life pretty captivating!

This is a nice book to read and I definitely recommend people give it a try! And I'll be looking forward to any other books by Jo Draxler!
