1926 finds Mark Kingsley, a WW1 veteran of the Lafayette Flying Corps, but now a lawyer struggling to make ends meet in The Bronx, receiving a call from the local police precinct to act for a vagrant suspected of homicide. But relief at the possibility of at least some financial respite is soon negated by the discovery that the accused is his old best friend and fellow flyer from those wartime days.

Convinced that Lee Vennington is being framed for the brutal murder of a local priest, Kingsley sets out to discover the truth along a trail rich in recollections of their past adventures in and over Flanders.
