Description

Obsessed with learning the origins of the cosmos, the actual meaning of life, and the true purpose of civilization, a fine Scotsman named Fingal T. Smyth dedicates himself to the study of Plato’s most extraordinary ideas.

Convinced of Plato’s belief that humankind possesses any and all innate knowledge deep within the collective unconscious mind, Fingal soon conducts a series of bold, pioneering occult-science experiments by which to resolve the riddle of the universe once and for all.

However, Fingal forgets how violent and perilous the animal impulses that reside in the deepest recesses of the unconscious mind. And when Fingal unleashes a mysterious avatar of his innate knowledge, the entity appears as a burning man and immediately seeks to manipulate innocent and unsuspecting people everywhere into immolating themselves.

Now, with little hope of returning the fiery figure into his being, Fingal must capture his nemesis before it destroys the world.

"Reviewed by Pikasho Deka for Readers' Favorite On the Threshold is a paranormal mystery novel by M. Laszlo.

Spanning six decades since 1907, the story follows the life of Fingal T. Smyth, a hotelier from the Scottish Highlands, whose invention of an apparatus to prove Plato's theory of innate knowledge inadvertently causes him to unleash a mysterious and malignant entity from within himself. The projection of all his inborn, primeval instincts assumes the identity of the burning man who manipulates everyone he comes across to immolate themselves. Fingal tracks the trail of his malicious and ethereal twin all over Europe, eventually arriving in the jungles of Africa, determined to stop him and solve the riddle of the universe once and for all. Meanwhile, his old friend Jean Selwyn delves into studies to repair Fingal's machine to help him capture the burning man. Will they be successful?

On the Threshold is one of the most unique paranormal mysteries I've read this year. At times, M. Laszlo's novel plays out like a feverish dream, and you find yourself transported to times and places you've never been before. The narrative is filled with magical realism, and it brings an almost gothic flavor to the setting that is not only immersive but also oddly captivating. This is slow-burn storytelling at its finest. Laszlo also incorporates elements of horror alongside suspense and mystery to keep readers glued to the pages. Fingal is a very compelling character, and I found some of his inner monologues surprisingly hilarious. The author takes a while to set up the characters and the plot, but by the midway point, the story has its hooks in you. This will be the perfect book for paranormal mystery readers."
