"The Cat on the Roof" by Peter Scottsdale is a delightful and entertaining cozy cat crime caper that is sure to captivate fans of the genre. With its lovable feline protagonist and an engaging mystery, this book offers a charming escape into a world of intrigue and adventure.
The story revolves around Whiskers, a clever and mischievous cat who finds himself at the center of a puzzling mystery when his favorite human, Mrs. Murphy, becomes the prime suspect in a crime. Determined to clear her name, Whiskers embarks on a daring investigation, assisted by an eclectic cast of characters, including fellow cats, dogs, and even a parrot. The author's ability to infuse human-like qualities into the animal characters adds an extra layer of whimsy and enjoyment to the narrative.
Peter Scottsdale's writing style is engaging and lighthearted, perfectly suited for a cozy mystery. The pacing is well-balanced, with a steady progression of clues and twists that kept me engaged and eager to uncover the truth. The author's attention to detail in describing the feline perspective, from Whiskers' observations to his thought processes, adds a unique and endearing touch to the storytelling.
The characters in "The Cat on the Roof" are a delightful bunch, each with their distinct personalities that add depth and humor to the story. Whiskers shines as a charming and resourceful protagonist, using his natural feline instincts and intelligence to navigate the world of humans and animals alike. The supporting characters, both human and animal, bring diversity and a sense of community to the narrative, fostering a strong sense of camaraderie and teamwork.
The cozy setting of the story, with its quaint neighborhood and colorful inhabitants, adds to the overall charm of the book. Scottsdale paints a vivid picture of the surroundings, making it easy to visualize the cozy homes, winding streets, and secret nooks where the mystery unfolds. The author's love for cats and their unique behaviors shines through, creating an authentic and relatable portrayal of feline companionship.
While "The Cat on the Roof" offers an enjoyable reading experience, there were moments when the plot felt slightly predictable, and the resolution of the mystery was not as surprising as I had hoped. However, this did not detract significantly from my overall enjoyment of the story, as the engaging characters and whimsical atmosphere more than made up for it.
This is a charming and lighthearted cozy mystery that cat lovers and fans of the genre will appreciate. Peter Scottsdale's ability to weave a tale that combines mystery, humor, and the unique perspective of a feline protagonist is commendable. If you're looking for a light and entertaining read with a touch of feline mischief, this book is a paw-some choice. I give it a solid four-star rating and look forward to future cat-filled adventures from Peter Scottsdale.
I enjoyed this book. It was the first by this author for me but I definitely will look for more books by this author. This is a nice light read.
The Cat On The Roof is the first book i have read by Peter Scottsdale. As a cat lover this book was definately one i wanted to read. The cover is engaging and the synopsis grabs your attention.
Jamie is happily living his life with his new girlfriend and cats. After his ex girlfriend Lisa and her lover tried to kill him. Now she is back and she wants Jamie back. She has moved in to a house down the road and watches her ex. Luckily Scottie , Alley and Tanzy are on the case and wont let any harm come to their human. This is one story you wont want to put down. Grab a drink and find a cozy place to curl up and settle down. Recommended for fans of cozy mysterys and cats
One day, Scottie the cat detects some strange activity in the neighborhood. It's Lisa, the murderous ex-girlfriend of Jamie, Scottie's owner. Along with Jamie's other cats, Alley and Tanzy, Scottie vows to uncover the plot against his family and put a stop to it.
TW: murder, arson, animal attacks and injuries, references to kidnapping
I was looking for a quick read to pass the time, and mysteries/ thrillers are one of my interests. And seeing this title, the cat lover in me couldn't resist. When I downloaded the file and saw that it was part of a series I hadn't read, I got worried and wondered if I should read it at all, but I ultimately decided to read it anyway.
And I am glad I did! This entire short story is told in the first person (or first cat?) POV of a cat named Scottie, who's apparently been involved in solving a multitude of mysteries before and after this one. While I didn't read any of the previous installments in this series prior to this one, I was still able to enjoy reading. And I think I'm going to check out the rest of the series.
This was short and silly. It's definitely hard to write from the point of view of a pet -- I think Spencer Quinn is a master -- but I really started getting interested in the story and worried about the 3 hero cats. The story is fluff, but it's fun fluff, and the family with their 3 cats is very likeable
Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this
The Cat On the Roof is the 4th Cozy Cat mystery by Peter Scottsdale. Released 28th March 2023, it's 166 pages and is available in paperback and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links and references throughout.
This is a fluffy cozy(ish) thriller mystery written from the first "person" PoV of a cat who, with his cat siblings, is trying to foil a plot against his human, Jamie. Although it's not derivative, it's very much in the same genre as Spencer Quinn's Bernie books, and Sneaky Pie Brown books by Rita Mae Brown.
The dialogue is often over the top and tongue in cheek. It's a short, light, enjoyable cozy and will likely appeal to fans of the aforementioned authors. Despite being the fourth book in the series, it works perfectly well as a standalone read.
Four stars.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
2nd Book of the cat detective series that I have read though I understand it's the 4th in the series. I have to say I enjoy these cute quick reads and to write from a cat perspective is a real talent. Look forward to more. These books can be read as a standalone really as it gives insight into the previous books without having to read them first if that makes sense.
This is a general review of the last two books I read in this series.
I'm a cat lover and love these mysteries featuring a great detective called Scott who's also a cat.
The stories are well plotted, surprising and Scott is a clever and well written cat.
Read it because they're a lot of fun
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine
This book was such a cute cat mystery! I’m a HUGE cat lover and this book made me so happy. I loved the characters and the storyline. The cats were definitely my favorites 😻 but, I did enjoy the human characters too.
This book was something that my heart needed and I’m so glad I read it.
Thank you, NetGalley for my FREE copy of this book. It was a wonderful novel.
I highly recommend this book to all cat lovers especially those that love mysteries! ❤️
Princess Fuzzypants here; Scottie, the tabby cat, is once more having to do the thinking for his human. Jamie is a nice guy but not too bright and his choice in girlfriends was pretty shabby when Lisa tried to kill him. He is now with a new lady who is much nicer and less deadly but Lisa, now out of jail, has found him again and thinks she can win him back. Even Jamie is not that dumb.
The kitties are all working together to keep Jamie safe and try and figure out what Lisa’s game is. Then when her former partner in crime also shows up, things go from frustrating to deadly in short order. Scottie is going to have his paws full trying to protect both feline and human family. It is a close call but you know things will work out. A cat is in charge. Could there be any doubt?
It was an easy and enjoyable read. Four purrs and two paws up.
Scottie and the gang to the rescue...once again!
Hello! I am Duque de León y Medina the Gorgeous One, and my mother has given me permission to write this review, as long as I don't scratch her screen with my paws.
The Cat on the Roof is a very entertaining story that tells us, from the point of view of Scottie the Tabby cat, his adventures to keep his human and his neighborhood safe.
On this occasion, a former villain reappears: Lisa, Jamie's ex-girlfriend, has moved into a neighboring house, probably seeking revenge. As you may remember, in the first book the kittens stopped Lisa and her accomplice, Bruce, from murdering Jamie to take his money.
This time, Lisa and Bruce have returned with very bad intentions. And we can't forget Thor, the mixed dog, who also wants to take revenge!
In short, Scottie's adventures, written by Peter Scottsdale, are very enjoyable and easy to read, full of humor and funny moments that will make you laugh non-stop, but there are also tense moments full of action and lots of claws. My foster siblings and I highly recommend them, especially to people who love cats, like my mawmaw.
My maw insists that I must write that we want to read more of Scottie's adventures... mmmrrrwww, should I be jealous?
Mawther and I want to thank Mr. Scottsdale and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and enjoy this book.
The opinion I have expressed above is based solely on what my maw and I think and feel about this book.
A fun and easy read told by the view point of a cat . When Scottie’s human owner ex-girlfriend returns to town is murder on her agenda.
This is the fourth in the Cozy Cat Thriller series and can be read as a standalone. I thought the author did an excellent job telling things from the cat’s POV . A must read for all cat lovers .
I just reviewed The Cat On the Roof: A Cozy Cat Crime Caper by Peter Scottsdale. #TheCatOntheRoofACozyCatCrimeCaper #NetGalley
I loved this book! It's told from the cat's point of view and was an absolute joy to read!
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is a cat lover.
I received a complimentary copy from BooksGoSocial via NetGalley and was not required to write a review.
All opinions expressed are my own.
A cute and quick mystery told from the pov of Scottie the Tabby (think Mrs. Murphy mysteries by Rita Mae Brown). Lisa, the woman who tried to murder his person a few years ago is back and he is sure she is up to no good. Can Scottie and his friends save the day?
I read another in this series (the next one actually), but liked this one better. The story flowed better for me. The cats were cute, of course. The story moved a long quickly but I didn't feel like things were rushed. Anyone who likes cat mysteries is sure to enjoy this.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for an honest opinion.
