AJ Docker, known by nickname Doc, is the right person to have around in an emergency. He rescues a badly injured skier on the slopes whilst on holiday with an impromptu tracheotomy.
Doc works in ER. When a young woman turns up for the second time with some severed fingertips, this time well beyond saving, something is triggered in Doc. With his sidekick Tom, who happens to be a cop, he vows to get to the bottom of who is responsible for this sadistic murder.
Soon he stirs up a hornet's nest of Ukrainian gangsters. But the good doctor is no ordinary doc, he knows how to fight and handle a gun. He is also lucky. His irritating neighbour for exam proves to possess unsuspected talents at just the right moment.
He is not the kind of man who will back off or call for backup at quite the right time. This leads him into some extraordinarily dangerous and nail-biting adventures.
Whether or not the author was also a detective with a black belt in dirty fighting is unknown, but the loyalty and camaderie that exists between all workers on the front line mopping up after life's casualties of corruption and evil seems real enough in the telling. The writer, as a doctor, does also have an agenda in pointing out that bureaucracy and middle management, probably are strangling the life out of the funds that hospitals need to actually treat people rather than pushing for accountability.
This was a truly engaging and thrilling read. Yes, in real life, those who survive the front line do use humour to survive, though a hero such as Docker still seems a little too good to be true. However, the feel-good factor
makes this story uplifting ultimately, as well as entertaining.
This is one of those books that I absolutely could not put down. I read it in two days, although it easily could have been read in one sitting if I didn’t have to work. It was fast paced, kept me on my toes and even had me giggling at some point. I love dark humor and sarcasm and there is a bit of that. AJ Docker aka “Doc” is a physician in an ER and let me tell you that the hospital drama/humor in this book could not be more realistic! I’m a nurse and I audibly laughed out loud about the hospital politics. 5 stars and definitely recommend.
Fast, fun medical thriller -- the first in a new series.
As a nurse, I really have always appreciated well-written medical thrillers and follow certain authors who never disappoint. Happy to add a new name to my list as I enjoyed this action-packed story about an emergency room physician who gets involved with some very bad dudes.
Dr. AJ Docker (Doc) is on duty when a young woman comes in with a broken wrist. He senses that there is more going on with her than she is willing to tell but has to let her leave the ER after treatment. He is stunned when that same patient is returned to the ambulance bay and dumped from a car -- DOA. She's been beaten and mutilated and the name she had given is fake. Doc and his friend, a canine cop with his dog, Banshee, want justice and start snooping around to find out who the woman was and why she died.
This book had some great characters and some crazy over-the-top scenarios, but it was a lot of fun to read. I enjoyed the medical interspersed with the amateur crime fighting. Sure, parts of it were totally unrealistic and hard to believe, but I just could not put it down so finished it in one sitting. There was humor that made me laugh out loud and tense moments that kept me rapt. Definitely want to see more of Doc and can't wait for his next book.
Thank you to the NetGalley and Black Rose Writing for this e-book ARC to read, review, and recommend.
Great start to a promising series. “Doc” is on of those characters you can’t help but like. His superhero mentality shines through as he fights for those who can’t defend themselves. A Ukrainian mob is his main target, but he can’t help taking a shot at the hospital administrator. Looking forward to the next installment.
