Description
London, 1918: the world is being torn apart by war, but for the girls of London’s Foyles bookshop, where there is friendship, there is hope… Perfect for fans of Rosie Clarke and Elaine Everest.
Ellen Beckford and her sister Mary are living under their father’s shadow. Before their beloved mother died, they had dreamed of bright futures, but torn apart by grief, Harold Beckford barely lets his daughters out of his sight. Then Harold is injured during a break-in at his office at London’s docklands, and can no longer work. And with prices rising and food scarce, Ellen has no choice but to defy her father’s rules and seek employment. She finds a position at London’s renowned Foyles bookshop, and the other shop girls quickly take her under their wing.
But there are dark times ahead. Ellen’s father is accused of gathering intelligence from the docklands for the enemy, and the police seem determined to see him shot for spying. With the help of her new friends, can Ellen clear her father’s name and save her family from destitution?

What a joy to return to the friendship of Foyles!
Like some youngsters, Ellen and Mary Beckford think their father Harold is strict or grumpy. It’s not until after the death of their mother that they realise it’s probably been worrying about not having work or enough money to pay bills and buy food that’s made him appear like that.
When Harold gets injured at work Ellen decides she needs to take on some of the household responsibility. Knowing that Harold is against her working she decides the ideal place to try would be Foyles as she has spent so much of her young life in there with her mother buying and reading books, and is familiar with staff. Ellen is delighted when she get work for a few days a week, will her father feel the same.
Ellen’s problems are not over. When her father’s office at the docks is broken into and he is placed under suspicion, it’s how best to prove that he’s not guilty. This is where the Foyles family come into their own, Molly with her forthright manner, Victoria ever caring and Alice the sensible one.
I loved the assortment of characters, my favourite was Mary, always ready with backup. Least favourite was Irene, hard.
I was so pleased to get another unexpected in this series. Loved it.
Firstly thank you Netgalley for this Arc
Another brilliant book in this series. Family saga at its best
Been so long since we visited the Foyle bookshop girls and was lovely to catch up with them. This latest instalment centres round a new bookshop girl who needs the help and support of the others. Ellen is the new girl working in the shop as well as a newspaper part time to help with money as her father is out of work due to an accident.
Then it all blows up Ellen’s father is arrested for being a spy, but to Ellen and the rest of the girls it dosnt add up. They go on a journey to prove her father’s innocence and catch the real spy.
Brilliantly written
