This is not the usual type of book I review, but as I therapist I was intrigued to read it and I was not disappointed! The artwork featured in the book is so cute. I love the author’s message of slowing down in today’s world and observing nature and creatures around us to ground us. I would definitely buy a copy of this book to keep in my therapy office or waiting room, as it is a light and fun read while also providing small morsels of wisdom. The author does a great job of emotionally connecting you to her flock, and the author’s note at the end made me much more emotional than I had planned when going into this book. Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and publisher for providing me with a copy of this book.
Thank you so much to NetGalley , the publisher, and author for allowing me to review this beautiful book. This book speaks to my soul. I love chickens. I love the artwork. I love the inspirational messages we can all learn from these amazing creatures and I love the tidbits of information about chickens sprinkled throughout. I need a physical copy of this beautiful book. Everyone must also read the authors note at the end. What a beautiful tribute this book is to some wonderful friends. I am so thankful that this book found me and I can’t wait to get my hands on a physical copy. Everyone should read this!!!
This book is fabulous. Tendra owns backyard chickens and her affection for them is evident in both her words and her charming illustrations. This is not a self help book - there are gentle suggestions and observations. It would be a fun book to work through as daily meditations. I'd like to give a paper copy to my friend Anna, who also loves her backyard chickens, but this would be a fun gift for anyone who might benefit from a little bit more joy in their lives.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free e-Arc is exchange for an honest review.
The illustrations are lovely with good contrasting colours chosen and the small wisdoms - I am surprised to say since they often compare chicken behaviours to humans - insightful. Sometimes I laughed out loud, sometimes I had to blink away a tear even. This would make a lovely gift for people who like to take a humorous view on life. Or people who just love chickens, because again, the artwork ist so so good.
What a gorgeous book! Not only are the illustrations of chickens lovely, but the short life lessons from the habits of chickens (which are organized into seasons) gave me all the nostalgia of my childhood growing up with a flock. Revel, Ebb and Grieve were probably my favorite pages.
I’ll definitely be buying a couple copy’s for the chicken lovers in my life.
Thank you NetGalley for the advance copy.
Such a fun, uplifting book. The illustrations were so vibrant and fun. A great book for anyone, but especially for chicken lovers.
This book was so wholesome, loved meeting the whole chicken family and reading the inspiring and thought-provoking comments.
Gorgeous illustrations (which I'd love to frame), with lovely insights about what chickens can teach us by the talented author/illustrator Tedra Hamel, who raises and adores these amazing creatures. We learn the names and personalities of hers, and I grew to love each one. A heartwarming book geared more to adults than children. Highly recommended!
Thanks to Tedra Hamel, Quarto Publishing Group USA Inc., and NetGalley for the ARC. Opinions are mine.

I loved this book and I loved the artwork! My daughter is obsessed with her chickens and the author is spot on. It’s a cute informational book about chickens and makes it fun to learn more.
Therapy chickens was one of the cutest books I’ve read in a long time. With beautiful illustrations and words of wisdom this book would be a wonderful gift for anyone in your life, or even yourself. Never having been around chickens, to find what you can learn from them was a unique and informative view in this book. I’ll be reading and again to keep adjusting my views toward each season of the year and life.
Absolutely adore this book, from beautiful artwork to beautifully written words. It is just wonderful. I think this will make a beautiful gift and a book to turn to when you just need some words of wisdom. Everyone needs more therapy chickens in their life and if they can't have real ones, this book is the next best thing.
This is a lovely celebration of chickens. I really loved the biographies of the chickens with their individual personalities and quirks. The art is colourful and brings out the characteristics well. I now want to loaf like a chicken.
This would be a great present for anyone who is keeping their own chickens.
Thank you for the ARC.
A short and entirely charming read. I can't say I'm much of a chicken person myself, but plenty of people in my family are and the art in this book really captured the nature of them, I think. It was bright and colorful and the advice inside was genuinely helpful, if a bit silly at times (but, well, I think we could all use a bit more silly yet helpful advice). I really look forward to purchasing this when it's officially released.
This book is GORGEOUS. I would put these pictures on a wall, they're so bright and beautiful. The use of strong colors is amazing.
That's before you read the wonderful life lessons the chickens can teach you, like working together and standing up for yourself. The author said that one of the chickens enjoyed going for bike rides and one used to go skiing with her.
If you want to stay happy, don't read the author's note. Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this
I read parts of this with my 6 year old and he loved it! Especially all of the different chicken illustrations. That being said, it's not a children's book, more for wisdom about slowing down, enjoying what you have and looking at things from different perspectives - life lessons & good reminders for everyday living.
Living with chickens brings more of life into focus. Each chicken has a name, a personality, and something different for us to focus on. Presented in a format with a page which has an illustration of that particular one, with the facing page giving a word with a few paragraphs making the reader think.
The book is brilliantly and delightfully illustrated by the author.
Well suited for reading WITH someone of any age, great for gifting to anyone (and cheaper than an appointment), but especially to a school or your public library!
I requested and received a temporary electronic copy on Adobe Digital Editions from Quarto Publishing Group – Wellfleet Press via NetGalley. Thank you!
While I don’t have chickens of my own, I have several friends and neighbors that do, which is what drew me to this title. This book is beautiful both in terms of illustration as well as writing; I can’t wait to get it for my chicken friends once it is published. It explores themes that chickens embody (such as hydrate, dance, reset, breathe) and how we can apply them to our lives (chicken owners or not ❤️)
This is a gorgeous book. The illustrations are so colorful and engaging. I really enjoyed the word and short paragraph that went with each illustration. I have chickens and think any chicken owner will enjoy this book. This would make a wonderful coffee table book. A great conversation starter.
This picture book is absolutely darling! The art is very adorable, and the author is clearly passionate about chickens. Their commentary on each page is educational with a lighthearted tone to it that reflects how much the author likes chickens. My only gripe with the story was how small the text was. I felt myself squinting to read the paragraphs which was a bit cumbersome. But as an owner of silkie chickens myself, I adored this book and the sentiments behind it.
I have always loved chickens and found their behavior not just cute but fascinating. Each page is like a silent invite to ground yourself while reading about certain chicken behaviors and how they can be applied to human life. I often found myself laughing as it brought sweet memories to mind about these cute and peculiar creatures. I enjoyed this sweet, comforting read. Thank you to the author and NetGalley.
this was an interesting read but very very insightful. i learned so much, i only requested this cause the illustrations caught my eye i thought it was cute but the whole concept of the book was amazing.
thank you thank you for this ARC. i ordered
me the physical book 🤍
Therapy Chickens by Tedra Hamel is absolutely precious and I would defy anybody not to smile at least once when reading this utterly delightful book!
Written while a nursing student, Tedra Hamel is a self-described millenial and opens her heart about how she was seeking a type of grounding for the anxiety, depression and stress she was experiencing in her day to day life. Hamel sought an emotional grounding, in a flock of chickens and in September 2020, set to drawing them through the seasons, giving each drawing a narrative and I am ever so thankful that she did
This book is pure, unadulterated joy for me. I will absolutely be buying it the minute tit is published on 20 Feb 2024 as it is a book to brighten any day and to be kept in pride of place, easy to reach for and enjoy a page at a time, or all at once .But, if you are seeking a little bit of light in your day, if thinks are a bit murky, then this book is for you
The illustrations are delightful and full of whimsy, the narratives positive and unassuming, just gentle and wholesome.
Thank you very much to NetGalley for this beautiful book. The opinions are my own and the review given voluntarily
